Wow, this brings back great memories. I learned to knit as a kid, taught my my Norwegian granny. Every time I've picked up knitting since then, even continental, it seemed "wrong" to me. Turns out this is how she taught me! Now it all makes sense.

I do the knit stitches the same way you do in the video, but my purl stitches are done with the yarn in the back and the needle in the back. Same stitch, just slightly different technique. I 'm going to try it your way though. :-)

This is the best way to knit. I believe your rib knitting must be slightly different as you would not pss the wool from front to back for each stitch. Could you show us?

Thanks for this video. I've knitted this way for years after relearning knitting from a Polish woman decades ago. But it is hard to explain! Some people think that Eastern European knitting will twist the stitches back on the purl row. I had a number of misunderstandings with people about it. They claimed it wouldn't be practical to knit in the round this way. But as you can see, no twisted stitches, they are just oriented differently than with reg. Continenta or Eng. Now, a ref

This is how I learned to knit and didn't know for 20 years that there was another method! If you get REALLY persnickety you can tell the difference at the very bottom of two knit stitches done in the Eastern and "conventional" way.

this is kind of how i knit, i go thru the back but i purl differently i think. but the results are the same. i dont know what to call my method and thus i am scared to try increases and decreases

If you think in terms of which way you want the decrease to slant, you can create a decrease. See my other video for various decreases I work with. Sometimes it takes experimenting with what looks better and suits your needs. I have found that most increases are the same with any method of knitting.

Thank you for this video. I have never seen knitting done this way but cannot wait to try it. It looks as if it will increase the speed of my knitting by about 5 times. Because I have problems with my wrists, I especially like the minimal amount of twisting movements required. Thanks again!

Today I discovered the "weird " way people knit here. I was in shock!. It is so slow . I knit as you do, maybe that might be weird to some too but it is easier and much faster too. I guess I will have problem following instructions here in USA. How would I "translate" patterns in to my old fasion way of nitting ?

The patterns are exactly the same. The only difference is how you do the mechanics of knitting.

i purl this way but don't knit this way...it's been so long i can't remember where i learned this purl stitch but it works and it's quick.

I learned to purl this way and people are amazed at how much faster I can work than they can. It's very simple and a huge timesaver -- really worth learning.

This way of knitting is actually called Eastern Uncrossed Knitting. According to Priscilla Gibson Roberts in the book "Knitting in the Old Way", it is considered the oldest method of knitting. If it works it is not "wrong", just different. Thanks for your comment. Diana

I am so glad to have found this video. Nothing I have seen on books and other videos matches how I learnt to knit and specially purl. I am glad to see I am not the only one doing it this way. Also was begining to think my knitting method was wrong.

Over the years, I have adjusted my tension so that it is now even. You have the find your rhythm and hold your yarn in your left hand so that the loop on the right needle is not too loose when you pick it up and knit the next stitch. Good luck and thanks for the comment.

This is the first time I have ever seen anyone besides my mother knit like me! Thanks! It is so easy and fast. But, do you have any trouble with tension? Mine is often a little loose and very stretchy side to side.

This is the closest I've seen to how I knit and purl: Knit (or purl) in the back of the loop, and wrap the yarn clockwise using the left hand. Thank you!
