The earliest recording I've seen is Seamus Ennis(1951) Other recordings include : Burl Ives(1958), The Brothers Four(1962), The Highwaymen(1962), The Limeliters, (all titled "Kigary Mountains")and by 'Peter, Paul and Mary' as "Gilgarra Mountain." The Grateful Dead have covered this song also. This is just a partial list. Would be nice if people didn't just present limited knowledge on a topic. It misinforms people. Anyway, nice to see a song remain relevent so long. (^8
I think its funny, but the version of the PP&M record I have of this song calls this son Gilgarry Mountain...This is from the "A Song Will Rise" album. I think the spelling may differ between serial numbers of the album.
Only three authentic versions of this great ballad: PP&M, Burl Ives and Grateful Dead. I love all three but I tend to think Garcia really understood the song.
There are many titles, and the lyrics vary somewhat from version to version. Whiskey in the Jar, Gilgarra Mountain, Kilgary Mountain. A version by Peter, Paul, and Mary is titled "Gilgarra Mountain" on the album "A Song Will Rise." The PP&M version is the first one I heard, but there are many good renditions. Thanks so much for posting this!
That is the name of the song off the album and it is no a punk song. Peter Paul and Mary were very serious about their music and without them we would have been sorely deprived
I do love the song... but I am extreamly bothered, This song Is NOT Whisky in the jar, That is what the punk bands called the upbeat, changed lyrics version they use.
@mistydove That is incorrect. As recorded the title is "Gilgarra Mountain" The song is a cover of 'Whiskey in a Jar" and PP&M just retitled the song and changed a few lyrics. The song is thought to have originated from the 17th century. Many artists have done covers of this song. If your bothered about anything it should be your ignorance of the facts. It is not a title the "punk bands" gave the song. This song has gone by many names.
Thank you for uploading this song. I am surching for him as many years, because I had him on a Vinyl-REcord since 1967. Thank you.

@Rompeohara I love metallicas version, but it is actually an irish folk song...so this would be more "legit."

The Name of the song is Galgherra Mountain

All right, I'm sorry, it's not my fault.
But I found this song with the name Whiskey in the jar, which, as you know, IS a traditional and aincient irish song, and it IS NOT a punk song.
Anyway, except Galgherra instead Cork and Kerry, the lyrics are nearly the same.
Anyway, "Whiskey in the jar" is aincient, and probably "Galgherra Mountains" copied the rythm and some words of "Whiskey in the jar".
