Oh and given that they except evolution by natural selection as the method for which humanity came about (no need to applaud them, it took them a century after the publication of "the Origin of Species", while it took Marx about a year...), they should hold it as more consistent that the desire for sex is an evolutionary byproduct of selection in that animals with genes that gave an organism an appetite for having sex were more likely to live...
Basically they hold that ejaculation for any purposes other than generation is wrong, using one interpretation of "not spilling one's seed". Interesting to note that the Catholic Church allowed priests to marry for over one thousand years though and held that the foetus was ensouled at 40 days for a boy (actually before a foetus develops sexual characteristics) and 80 for a girl. Consistent Catholics would campaign against pornography first though, since lusting after a woman is adultery.
Another (very bad) Catholic here. Their argument actually is the most consistent with Jesus' teachings in the New Testament: adultery *is* still the only approved reason for divorce within the Catholic Church, though one can petition the Pope to get the marriage annulled if they determine that one or the other partner had no intention to keep the vows. They also apply celibacy until marriage to everyone and hold marriage to be man and woman one flesh like Mark 10:8.
Much of what Dan Savage said made sense. But I wish that he hadn't implied that the priests who molested kids did so because of the celebacy issue--this falsely links pedophilia and homosexuality, two very different things. Pedophilia, like other kinds of rape, is often a crime of power. Also, some people are simply more attracted to kids (of either gender) than they are to adults. But I agree that heteros should not demand celebacy from gays without demanding the same from other heteros.

I think the blogger he might have been referring to is John Shore. Google his name, very intelligent man and lots of stuff on his site about LGBTs and Christianity.
I think the reason celibacy has bean so horrible for preists is that it is a rule that has been forced upon them. I know of somebody who hasn't had sex, and that was merely his decision. And as far as i know, he hasn't molested any little children
@BassBOY0GIRL Exactly. I think the problem with members of the Catholic clergy, is that many of them may have had a calling to minister the Word and try their best to be Jesus-like community role models... but the calling to be a church leader doesn't necessarily mean that you've had the distinct calling to be celibate. The Roman Catholic Church needlessly joined together two distinct aspects of a person's life-- spiritual/community leadership and sexual behavior.
@wolfspirit820 "Celibacy actually means "without marriage". I seriously mean it! Look it up!!!!" Yes, but when is a Catholic allowed to have sex with someone other than his or her spouse?
@m3rrys0ngstr3ss I see you removed the comment. We all know that not every priest commited a crime. But the church certainly helped the ones who did to escape justice. To get hypersensitive about that in the face of what the church and the priests who did molest these children and young people seems really off base.
@m3rrys0ngstr3ss Are you seriously going to argue that the pedophile scandal is being unfairly focused on?
If you don't like the church being overly criticized after the most horrific and damning scandal in all of human history, then I dare say, you better get out of the business because your moral compass is broken.
The way I respond to it is "Fuck you uncle Jimmy!"

Lord of salvation keep looking away
It is your will that this world goes astray
Take us each day from this place you unworthed
Unfulfilled promise of heaven on earth
You are the one who killed your own son
We are the ones your hatred is on
Children are dying and this you're content
Where is your profit in what you have left
No intervention from angels above
god is the reason that Satan lives on

Am I thinking of a different Uncle Jimmy?

@unclexbob I definitely wouldn't call it the most horrific and damning scandal in all of human history. Exaggerating much?

@Decktrio Hey, I figure if people are going to pretend it was an isolated issue with a couple priests, I can compare it to the holocaust, can't I?
