(Jesus speaking) "Do not think that I have come to bring peace upon earth. I have come to bring not peace but the sword. For I have come to set a man 'against his father, a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law; and one's enemies will be those of his household'". (Matthew 10:34-36 NAB)
I don't fear going to hell because for the past 64 years, I've been there and can't seem to get out despite my best efforts. Hell is upon us, all who fall short of financial success know not the kingdom of mammon.
Theres no evidence that disproves the existence of A GOD(not just the christians god). So your arguments could be said the exact same way from the opposite side. Arguing over god is pointless and futile. No conclusion shall ever be reached until ones death. But.. it sure is fun :D
Very well done, very good arguments and an eloquent delivery. Of course, being the immature guy I am, I laughed loud at the vampire line. Yeah, that's the only thing I'll take away from that video. :-/
1st. let me say that i respect your views an im trying in no way shape or form to attack you or your beliefs, im just expressing my beliefs. but you should fear God over a crazy serial killer because Isiah 54;17 says no weapon formed against me shall prosper. so Man has no power over me because in the end God has the decision of what happens to me. (an the whole Fear God its not just saying Fear him i interpret it has "Respect" for who he is an what he has done for me.
Wait, this does not cover how atheists tell people to go there. You are afraid to cover that concept hu?
This does not make any atheists, including yourself look any smarter. Nope sorry, might as well watch Barney to learn more. I think your just avoiding the subject.
Did you not hear anything the guy said - or was god talking over the audio?
I don't mean to sound like a biggot, but seriously - you people have got to stop trying to convince people who know better.
We don't KNOW what happens after we die - but atleast we don't pretend to know.
He's not trying to sound smarter - he's trying to explain the arrogance of religion - and Atheists don't say "Go to hell" - that's the equivalent of saying "Go eat a smurf" - it does not exist.
i see you like books..you got a shelf filled with books behind you ...dont take word of people about this issue...REad for yourself and see where all this is coming from....perhaps you will have better take on the issue(just because you obviously seem to care for the topic of hell)....Rather just making a mockery out of it....YEAH WE ALL KNOW HOW SMART and WITTY YOU ARE NOW.....cheeers :-D
funny..You seem like an intelligent man.. So tell me, scientifically, can you pull something out of nothing? Can i pull, out of my empty hand an apple? No.. So, with that in mind, could the universe be pulled out of, say, nothing? Or the big bang (before it went "bang") just simply appear? Just a thought =)
Oh, and there's no such thing as a "social conservative candidate" seeing as our founding fathers based our country on Capitalism, which is the conservative mind set.. The word your looking for is "social (democratic) liberal/progressive" which Christians, for the most part(I haven't), don't try to swing votes to.
Thats so Cute =^_^-= You dont understand what the Big Bang ACTUALLY IS
The Big Bang says nothing about "making matter from nothing" if you actually studied what it was, instead of going to a bunch of Christian Websites with no scientific standing, then you would understand more
Dont join the conversation unless you know the topic, Ive read the bible, Ive gone to church, and Ive talked to Priests about hell and religion... So do some homework about the Big Bang before speaking
@BlankPicketSign It's funny,b/c according to Princeton, the big bang THEORY is : the theory that the universe originated sometime between 10 billion and 20 billion years ago from the cataclysmic explosion of a small volume of matter at extremely high density and temperature. your right, IT NEVER states when or how that matter was created, and since the laws of "science" (if you want a legitimate argument) it technically couldn't (conservation of energy, and matter)have been made or ever happen..
You seem very intelligent, but Im rather confused as to your motives. The Big Bang theory is a very sound and well supported theory RIGHT UP to just before the big bang event! Its really cool =^_^= All mathematics and science as we understand it now Break Down and fall to pieces milliseconds after the event.
This truth is not bad, in any way, Its ok that we don't understand how the universe began! Thats why we are studying it now ^_^
@BlankPicketSign Right, I'll explain my motive Einstein Came to the conclusion that there was in fact a god. not the Christian God (yaweh) but in fact, some sort of higher power. Now, we have been here for less than 10,000 years, and we have no idea whats in our oceans, how we were made (there's a theory, but we don't *know*), and for that matter, at all, how the universe was formed.
@BlankPicketSign . We can agree to disagree, and im glad i actually can have a constructive argument with some one of my intelligence.(without blowing up =p) Now, my motive is that there is some sort of higher power, and being atheist is being ignorant
Agreed! Im happy to find someone on the internet who is civil ^_^
I (being an atheist) only ask that someone to offer testable, verifiable evidence OF this higher power of yours ^_^
Im sorry that this might some "unreasonable" or "ignorant" of me, and I apologize. However, like all things that I ask from the world, I ask for Evidence. And if you have Evidence of this Higher Power (that can be tested), You WILL win a Noble Prize in Science! Until then, I will can not believe =^_^=
@BlankPicketSign I respect your beliefs as you respect mine. And i thank you good sir. The first time i have had a constructive argument on youtube =D Best of wishes my friend
And do have more trust in Science (all the sciences). After all, science is the one thing that has given the human race such a long and comfortable life. Don't knock down a section of science because its uncomfortable, but embrace it and find out the meaning behind its meaning ^_^ Just as you have done with Einstein
@o0oslayero0o I understand you wrote this over a year ago, but I'd like to state, it's very likely a higher being would exist, and oddly enough the most powerful creature we know of can be bested by another, such as a blue whale being killed by man, man being killed by disease, and then man killing the disease with an antidote. I'm not sure exactly if an Athiest would agree that other life exists in the universe, but it would seem more likely that it would, and much stronger than we. God like.
Though I personally chose to believe in a higher power, I must agree that people throwing Hellfire and Brimstone in my face because it's not THEIR higher power piss me off too. That said, I got a chuckle out of this though I could see how others might not.
So... your a bitchy little Highschool Student who likes picking on people who are intelligent, and different then you?
And you feel like taking away his right to Freedom of Speech? Which is a crime punishable by jail time under the constitution?
Wow... Thats makes me like Albert10110 even more, Because it seems he has to deal with idiots like you who pick on him just because he is different, just to sooth your own insecurities =^_^=
Are you white-asian mix? Cause....you kind of have that loook. I'm Korean-White, and... "militant" atheist. The type where people try to convert me, and I kindly say "No thank you, I don't believe in magic."
Sometimes I wonder how much more intelligent and eloquent I would become after spending twenty minutes with al. Thanks dude, this one was pure genius... and unfortunately a little naustalgic.
@peshinc You probably don't live in the midwest then, do you?
Also note that he's not directing this at every single christian ever, but you can't say that there aren't a lot of christians who use these and similar tactics to get followers.
Keep on doing what you do, Al. And put up some more videos!
Doubtless your posts are mediated and my past criticisms have been the narrow focus of your critiques. Here again you focus on an obvious weakness but you are getting to more weighty matter. Fear of the unknown universal and its exploitation by the church unforgivable. Though Christian, never grew up in this environment: was on T.V. Why dont you go for some of the bigger issues like human sacrifice (the less bloody kind drew me in) which I always find interesting: Frazer aside: let loose!
Over the course of the last two years my grandmother has slowly become more and more senile. Curiously, at the rate that her "adult life memory" (she doesn't recognize us anymore) deteriorated, her childhood memories seem to have become more vivid... and what she remembers best is her religious indoctrination: She is scared shitless and since the last couple months spends literally every waking minute saying her rosary.
She might not be scared of damnation but rather the unknown, death. Truly none of us know full out what's going to happen and if your grandma can find some comfort in superstition or fairy tale promises just let her be.
If you really believe this is it, the only time we have, than just let her live it the way she wants to. Not the way you want her to. Atheists have their faith, or lack there of, bashed all the time what makes it right to bash anothers?
Which i answered in my first sentence... "She might not be scared of damnation but rather the unknown, death."
People don't run to religion to be scared by it, they run to religion because they want some kind of answer. My grandfather was an atheist up until his last hours when he asked for a confession on his deathbed. I'm just saying that some people would rather believe in lies than actually "know" the truth. It's their decision to not necessarily "live with" but to "die with".
I think saying religion is disgusting and despicable is being a little harsh. All (well, most) religions start out based on pretty much the same thing: Love thy neighbor. It's a good rule for anyone, but religions have taken things too far, lost sight of the big picture, become self-righteous, etc.
I would have to disagree on your "Most religions start as love thy neighbor" claim.
The First four of the ten commandments are all about a Selfish god saying "Don't worship anything but ME"... And the very IDEA of "love thy enemy, love thy neighbor" came with Buddha over 500 years BEFORE Jesus supposedly lived. Then Jesus came along Thousands of Years after the Ten Commandments saying "Oh shit, wait, I fucked up!"
Christianity is all about "Worship me" everything else is 2nd
A big part of my mother's life was the Catholic church. When I was a child I went through all the rituals a catholic was obligated to do....first communion, being an alter boy, confirmation..ect. The priest constantly reminded us children that we were all going to hell, which made no sense to me. When my father left my mom, she was excommunicated from the church because she couldn't keep her man home. It crushed her. That is true evil. Thank you evil priest for opening my eyes.
so to be more clear with my statement that " a belief in big business is VERY different then a belief in god... simply by the fact that big business exists"
I would say that a major difference is that one of the beliefs has overwhelming evident to support the existence of the object of that belief. Whereas evidence for the existence of the other is underwhelming.
"Well you said big business exists which is obviously true but religion exists too"
of course religion exists. However, I was speaking of god, not religion.
And you are right that it isn't fair to say there isn't a higher being.. but only because I left out some premise leading to my assumption that god does not exist... if I was to be completely honest I would say there is no proof. Moreover, it is unlikely given the arguments against the idea.
So do you have a problem with all religion? Or just industrialized big religion? If thats the case, find fault in politics and business? Those are essentially just another form of religion. How come if you don't believe in god your an intellectual but if you don't believe in big business your a bum?
Well you said big business exists which is obviously true but religion exists too. Also I don't find it fair for you to say there is NOT a higher being. I believe that there is no proof that there is but there is also no proof that there is not.
I think he has a problem with all religion. It's detrimental to society, and does not serve to progress society. It all causes deep divides between common citizenry, and false hope with the common man. All the work, and effort put into religion is like throwing resources into an empty well. You are all waiting for a return investment, yet nothing returns, because the stock you invest in does not exist. A lot like the movie "Boiler Room".
Where you been? Were you kidnapped by a cult and just now escaped? But seriously, Al, you seem to be out of the loop. Apparently you're unaware, as the late, great Frank Zappa pointed out, that "There is no hell. There is only France."
despite how annoying it is having people try to convert you to christianity i kinda understand their feelings. they fully believe you are going to burn in hell for all eternity. they are doing a "nice" thing by trying to save you even if you think it's real or not. in their mind it is.
i would feel offended if someone didnt try to "save me" lol. that way they are basically saying they dont give a shit if you go to hell or not :P
you're not understanding their motives, they're just trying to earn themselves some Jesus Points, similar to a church that puts up with a screaming, drooling retard
It's the curse of being religious. If you have to make claims that are rooted in strong opinion instead of evidence, your pleas will necessarily be emotionally based. Then whether you try to "save souls" or not, you're doomed to look like a jerk.
You always make such cool videos. Do you know who else makes cool videos? I do check out my videos. Just click my name and check out my channel. If you like them then subscribe. If you hate them then leave me a nasty comment. Thanks!
Great Vid Al as always, you covered this subject in a very unique way...Where the fuck have you been? Very clear video by the way. It's not even listed as HD, but it looks it.
great vid.. I have heard all these deliveries.. Don't forget this one "what if your wrong". Of course it never occurs to them that they could have picked the wrong god and could be going straight to.... lets say hindu hell.
I remember when I was younger, a pastor making me cry because he told me in detail how me and all my family were going to die and burn in hell and that it was up to me to save them. It scares me so bad that I tried to subscribe to a faith I didn't really believe in for a good four or five years.
I had a few panic attacks when I was younger from thinking about everything I was told about hell. The idea of there being a God scared me instead of comforting me. When I read the Bible I saw a set of rules that if you don't follow then you get sent to hell. It was quite obvious to me almost everyone was going to hell, but most people seemed to think they weren't. Then I got a little older and realized it isn't real. Anyway, I sympathize with your comment.
yeah, i guess you can never know for sure until you die. when i read the bible now, i just don't feel enlightened or scared or happy or anything for that matter. im not 100% sure but i don't think i ever will be.
what people need to do is stop fearing death.death is inevitable,we all die,so enjoy life while your here.I truly believe if people didnt fear death there would be no need for religion
When I stop and think about it, I realize that one of the reasons why I clung to religion for so long was the fear of the afterlife.
And the people who tell you these things are not concerned about your well-being, as one of the "Go to Hell" options suggested. They just want to be able to say that they converted you so that they'll look better in front of their fellow Christians, and hopefully God, too.
Nice vid Al. Glad to see you back. By the way, I had a nephew tell me the same tactic is used in prison. A couple of vicious creeps approach a kid (young man) and threaten him unless he gives homosexual favors. A "hero" steps in and saves him from the fate. The hero takes the kid under his wing and buys him stuff from the canteen. Later he wants payment, slaps the kid around a bit, resulting in the kid paying with favors. The hero turns the kid over to the creeps, who were part of the BOO GAME!!
As you stated, the fear puts the pawn into a state of panic, resulting in him grabbing for straws. A number of years ago, a man put some coloring and flavoring in water, and told people they were going to be rejected by their friends and family because they had "bad breath." But of course, he had the solution to their problem. The man became a millionaire selling his "mouthwash." Sex doesn't sell as well as fear. Hell is a pseudoproblem devised and used to sell the Islamic/Christian Religion.
marvellous - as usual. It's good to have no lingering anxieties about hell & damnation. It was the only real lever of religion and even that has now been lost.
When people threaten me with hell, I move the discussion to a look at the Bible's contradictory statements on the afterlife—which to oversimplify only slightly, evolved through three major stages:
STAGE ONE: 37 out of 39 Old Testament books don't acknowledge—and some even deny—an afterlife.
STAGE TWO: 2 Old Testament books that say there IS an afterlife.
STAGE THREE: borrowing ideas from "the heathens" (Greeks, Zoroastrians, Egyptians, etc.), the authors of the New Testament make the afterlife one of their religion's main selling points.
My video response—"The Evolution of the Afterlife"—has the details.
The video didn't make me laugh as much as your comment did. Coming from the mouth of a 24 year old, I found the comment quite humorous since I was a Christian for 35 years. The human brain is a dynamic system. You are not the same person now psychologically as you were at 8. You shall not be the same psychologically at 80 as you now are. In order to stay somewhat the same, you would have to make a recordings expressing and promoting your present beliefs, and play them continuously to yourself.
stevebritgimp said, "Krapp's last tape? - Sam Beckett"
That would work as an analogy. But I was thinking about my poor mom. As a housemom back in the 40s, 50s, and 60s she lead a pretty sheltered life. Church three times a week was about her only recreation. When we were grown and gone she started a house cleaning business. While working she would listen to Pat Robinson and his clone all day. Recently while visiting and browsing Youtube I overheard her cry, "Nobody is going to take my Jesus!"

We do, as we can convince people to hate, and that is to say, to lie, steal, and destroy.
In other words, do not fear the simple man that kills, but the man that speads killing among others.

Why dont you go for some of the bigger issues like human sacrifice (the less bloody kind drew me in) which I always find interesting: Frazer aside: let loose!

I have to admit, that punchline is from the great comedian Daniel Tosh. He has a lot of great jokes, but that one was one of the more memorable.

Religion is disgusting and despicable.
ixiwildflowerixi 2 years ago
She might not be scared of damnation but rather the unknown, death. Truly none of us know full out what's going to happen and if your grandma can find some comfort in superstition or fairy tale promises just let her be.
If you really believe this is it, the only time we have, than just let her live it the way she wants to. Not the way you want her to. Atheists have their faith, or lack there of, bashed all the time what makes it right to bash anothers?
TheOnlyTony 2 years ago
TheOnlyTony: Did you even read ixiwildflowerixi's comment? I don't think there is much comfort to be found by being "scared shitless".
Albert10110 2 years ago
Which i answered in my first sentence... "She might not be scared of damnation but rather the unknown, death."
People don't run to religion to be scared by it, they run to religion because they want some kind of answer. My grandfather was an atheist up until his last hours when he asked for a confession on his deathbed. I'm just saying that some people would rather believe in lies than actually "know" the truth. It's their decision to not necessarily "live with" but to "die with".
TheOnlyTony 2 years ago
I think saying religion is disgusting and despicable is being a little harsh. All (well, most) religions start out based on pretty much the same thing: Love thy neighbor. It's a good rule for anyone, but religions have taken things too far, lost sight of the big picture, become self-righteous, etc.
Plentopic 2 years ago
@Plentopic

Whereas evidence for the existence of the other is underwhelming.
supravista 2 years ago
However, I understand the point you were making...
supravista 2 years ago
"Well you said big business exists which is obviously true but religion exists too"
of course religion exists. However, I was speaking of god, not religion.
And you are right that it isn't fair to say there isn't a higher being.. but only because I left out some premise leading to my assumption that god does not exist... if I was to be completely honest I would say there is no proof. Moreover, it is unlikely given the arguments against the idea.
*continued in next post*
supravista 2 years ago
So do you have a problem with all religion? Or just industrialized big religion? If thats the case, find fault in politics and business? Those are essentially just another form of religion. How come if you don't believe in god your an intellectual but if you don't believe in big business your a bum?
EpiDot52 2 years ago
How come if you don't believe in god your an intellectual but if you don't believe in big business your a bum?
neither statements are true
1) you're not an intellectual for not believing in god... though, intellectualism may lead to a disbelief in god.
2) well, I suppose you will have to define what it means to "believe" in big business
note: a belief in big business is VERY different then a belief in god... simply by the fact that big business exists
supravista 2 years ago
Well you said big business exists which is obviously true but religion exists too. Also I don't find it fair for you to say there is NOT a higher being. I believe that there is no proof that there is but there is also no proof that there is not.
EpiDot52 2 years ago
I think he has a problem with all religion. It's detrimental to society, and does not serve to progress society. It all causes deep divides between common citizenry, and false hope with the common man. All the work, and effort put into religion is like throwing resources into an empty well. You are all waiting for a return investment, yet nothing returns, because the stock you invest in does not exist. A lot like the movie "Boiler Room".

despite how annoying it is having people try to convert you to christianity i kinda understand their feelings. they fully believe you are going to burn in hell for all eternity. they are doing a "nice" thing by trying to save you even if you think it's real or not. in their mind it is.
i would feel offended if someone didnt try to "save me" lol. that way they are basically saying they dont give a shit if you go to hell or not :P
menimeskcor 2 years ago
you're not understanding their motives, they're just trying to earn themselves some Jesus Points, similar to a church that puts up with a screaming, drooling retard
FuckYourAssRaw 2 years ago
It's the curse of being religious. If you have to make claims that are rooted in strong opinion instead of evidence, your pleas will necessarily be emotionally based. Then whether you try to "save souls" or not, you're doomed to look like a jerk.

I remember when I was younger, a pastor making me cry because he told me in detail how me and all my family were going to die and burn in hell and that it was up to me to save them. It scares me so bad that I tried to subscribe to a faith I didn't really believe in for a good four or five years.
ReiDavidson 2 years ago 2
I had a few panic attacks when I was younger from thinking about everything I was told about hell. The idea of there being a God scared me instead of comforting me. When I read the Bible I saw a set of rules that if you don't follow then you get sent to hell. It was quite obvious to me almost everyone was going to hell, but most people seemed to think they weren't. Then I got a little older and realized it isn't real. Anyway, I sympathize with your comment.
LovinDarling 2 years ago
I've yet to decide if I think it's real or not, but I can't say those who do believe in it made it very appealing to me growing up.
ReiDavidson 2 years ago
yeah, i guess you can never know for sure until you die. when i read the bible now, i just don't feel enlightened or scared or happy or anything for that matter. im not 100% sure but i don't think i ever will be.
LovinDarling 2 years ago
what people need to do is stop fearing death.death is inevitable,we all die,so enjoy life while your here.I truly believe if people didnt fear death there would be no need for religion
ranchai100 2 years ago

The hero turns the kid over to the creeps, who were part of the BOO GAME!!
unseenstrings 2 years ago
As you stated, the fear puts the pawn into a state of panic, resulting in him grabbing for straws. A number of years ago, a man put some coloring and flavoring in water, and told people they were going to be rejected by their friends and family because they had "bad breath." But of course, he had the solution to their problem. The man became a millionaire selling his "mouthwash." Sex doesn't sell as well as fear. Hell is a pseudoproblem devised and used to sell the Islamic/Christian Religion.
unseenstrings 2 years ago 2
marvellous - as usual. It's good to have no lingering anxieties about hell & damnation. It was the only real lever of religion and even that has now been lost.

1 of 2:
When people threaten me with hell, I move the discussion to a look at the Bible's contradictory statements on the afterlife—which to oversimplify only slightly, evolved through three major stages:
STAGE ONE: 37 out of 39 Old Testament books don't acknowledge—and some even deny—an afterlife.
STAGE TWO: 2 Old Testament books that say there IS an afterlife.
ToddAllenGates 2 years ago 7
2 of 2:
STAGE THREE: borrowing ideas from "the heathens" (Greeks, Zoroastrians, Egyptians, etc.), the authors of the New Testament make the afterlife one of their religion's main selling points.
My video response—"The Evolution of the Afterlife"—has the details.
- Todd
