I was just on a mission trip down there AUG 3-11 in ST. Bernard Parish working wit hRandy from Adullum Christian church, and i had such a life changing expreience after i helped gut the home of Reisie who just moved into their new home they build after Katrina... They moved in May 2009... then july 26th Her home catches fire and she loses everything! I mean EVERYTHING! she had maybe a bathtub full of things she kept... It was so cool to see her transform her life to Christ as we were there!
This is so heart-wrenching....the scope and magnitude of the total destruction & devastation caused by the levee failures is mind-boggling. Katrina was an Act of God. The levee failures, MRGO and the pathetic response to the victims of this tragedy was an act of inept planning, engineering and government failure. This did not have to happen....All we can hope and pray for now is to learn from our "mistakes" and to never let this happen to a single US citizen again- From: SE LA citizen.
I just got back from a mission trip to New Orleans and the St. Bernard parish area. I watched news coverage on the storm, burt being from wisconsin, it was so opposite from anything here, i had a hard time really picturing what happened. Now that i have a better picture, its even more tragic. But the amazing thing i noticed is that even in the face of all the hardships, the people don't lose hope. They are positive and have faith, and that is truly incredible!
Post Hurricane Katrina I spent time in St. Bernard Parish as part of the Hurricane clean up crew. I have to say. I've never met a nicer group of folks then what I ran into during my time there. I continue to wish them all the best, as well as great success in the future, in returning theirt lives back to some normalcy. Yes this was a great tragidy that all these folks have sufferd.
I was down for a spring break...i wish id come sooner, I wish I'd stayed longer. This country owes so much to St. Bernard....I'll be back this summer, I hope. It's a shame Camp Hope is closing, but hopefully the new place in Arabi will go okay.
I lived in St.Bernard also,in Buccaneer Villa North.Worked at CMC. Wasn't it a great community??I miss it so much!! Lost everything, even stuff in the attic.Started over in Mandeville, but I don't feel at home. I cried for the 1st year and a half, didn't matter where I was, driving in my car, shopping,or at home,I cried all the time.I doubt I will ever get over Katrina,it has left a huge scar in my heart. Was a shame ppl were left to fend for themselves,Canadian Mounties 1st to arrive on the 5th day.
I was lucky enough to have the chance to be in St Bernard from Sep 06 - Apr 07. I drove out from California and stayed at a church in Arabi. We ran a food line, gutted and worked on houses, and basically did whatever we could for the residents there. We showed this video to every volunteer group that came down and always had people in tears. I cannot describe how amazing, loving, and determined the people of St. Bernard are. I learned so much from that community/family that I will never forget.
I am so thankful that we left at the last minute. I am in Metairie now and hate it. I cry often. There was no place like St. Bernard. Shame on our country for abandoning us. It's a shame that the first outside help was Canadian. Residents and SBFD and SBSO helping our own, taking care of each other. But that's how the Parish was, friends and neighbors, and famiy helping each other
I live here still and cry everyday for what WAS,My 91 yr.old aunt is on this video in the back of that big army truck at Chalmette Port, after being rescued from the roof.God Bless Ua All!!! It don't look much better after all this time! Don't Forget Us!!!!
I couldn't stand it every time someone talked about how new orleans was flooded 80%. I would tell them excuse me but st. bernard was flooded 100%! We were ignored by the news, media and everyone else. I miss Chalmette.
i just recently got back form a mission trip there with lakewood church it changed my life i wanted to stay there like just the were so nice and sweet
anderson cooper FROM CNN IS A SELLOUT!! Did you see his latest report about New Orleans? He didn't talk about the slow recovery & real issues. He talked about broken fema trailors being sold on auction websites,he didn't mention the school system or the slow recovery.
These kids in New Orleans are getting messed over by our government officials and fake ass anderson cooper doesn't really care. He said he was "keeping them honest" but he's all talk.
I saw that video when I was in Saint Bernard for Alternative Spring Break, as well (I'm from Sonoma State University, in Northern California), and our entire group felt exactly the same way as moonbeamphoto's and RineRam123's groups.
By the way, I have a slideshow of some pictures I took when my group arrived in Saint Bernard. You can find it on my user page.
This is the video they showed us before going to Chalmette/Violet/Meraux in March 2006 and March 2007 and I still can't get over driving by all these places in the video. My college (Assumption College) and Stonehill College went on our spring breaks and the images from this video and from being down there still unsettle me. This is an amazingly powerful video that more people need to see.
Habitat for Humanity showed us this video the first day we were down there for our Alternative Spring Break. It broke our hearts to see this video and to know this happened right where we were driving and working all week. I know our group wished we could ahve stayed longer. Good luck to everyone down there.

Katrina was evil in it's purest forum. If you don't believe in hell - look at what Katrina did.

Someone should ask the parish officals where all the money went? Once again LA gov officals have screwed the citizens. Junior needs to fess up!

These videos are so hard to watch,I don't think that you can ever get over it,especially if st.bernard parish is all that you've ever known.
