Their DARPA program pumps out some pretty crazy advanced tech that looks straight out of sci-fi. In fact, that's precisely how they fool people into believing that it doesn't exist, by passing it off as "Sci-Fi" in the movies. After all it largely discredits any rumors of such tech when it's already been dismissed as such in the movies.

The current tech has bulky, ugly goggles, laggy frame rates (so the AR seems out-of-sync with the real world), and no lighting detection (so the AR looks "pasted on" the video instead of blended into the environment. Once these are fixed, then yes, it'll catch on quick. Until then, I won't hold my breath.
