You heard the name KRS One, you knew what he was about, Biz Markie, partying style, Big Daddy Kane, smooth ladies man style, Queen Latifah and the Flavor Unit, afrocentric styling along with A Tribe Called Quest, Rakim and Public Enemy, positive knowledgable style of music. And thats what was good about music back then because it was easier to pick and choose which one you'd prefer. Nowadays, everyone sounds the same.

I agree that record company VP´s and a great deal of money hungry artists (i know they gota live though) have distorted a good music genre, but still you gotta check out people like K´naan, Lowkey (alphabet assassin), Aesop Rock, Hangar 18, El-p, Ra the rugged man, C-Rayz Walz and Mf Doom oh and company flow if they´re still acive. They´re some of the interesting artists among others. They actually got a great deal of variety among them.
