@idontcare80 You are a fucking imbecile. It's obviously meant to be functional, not cool looking. Do you have any idea what the bonneville salt flats even are? It's a top speed testing track on a try lakebed where a huge saltwater lake evaporated down until nothing is left at the bottom but the salt, so it's hard and compacted, and miles of perfectly flat ground. You don't go there to compete for looks like it's a custom car show. And If you think that engine puts out 20hp you're even dumber.
@hzuiel Why did you feel it necessary to say anything about where this video was taken? Does it make the bike any less ugly because it's at the salt flats? Does it make it any less useless? NO. The only imbecile here is you.
@idontcare80 Your reply hasn't proved you to be any less of a moron, I am mentioning the location because it is BONNEVILLE freaking salt flats. People go there to test top speeds and break records. It's not a custom show, looks do not matter, aerodynamics and functionality do. You didn't address the fact that you think that highly tuned engine puts out 20hp, which is another obvious indicator that you are a know nothing keyboard warrior. A stock 250 ninja puts out more than 20 you idiot.
@hzuiel I never said it was a show bike, I said it was useless. This bike has ZERO aerodynamic considerations in its design and I'm well aware of how much power it makes. They topped out at something like 160 mph at the salt flats, most 1000cc sportbikes can beat that.
@idontcare80 You said it was a STYLING DISASTER, if you didn't think it was a show bike then WHY THE FUCK DO YOU CARE WHAT ITS STYLING IS LIKE. God is pisses me off that someone who can write whole sentences with punctuation can be so god damn stupid. It takes more than 20hp to get to 160mph and I can't find any records to indicate what speed ti ran at but if you do a simple google search you can find the bike's stats and it in fact has 125hp 130ft/lb torque from a 120cu engine....
@idontcare80 I"m guessing since you're so clueless you probably don't know how big 120cu is. What you referred to as that "lump" is bigger than a lot of car engines, and is one of the biggest motorcycle engines around. And the 1000cc sportbikes you mention are inline 4 engines, not vtwins, and in a totally different class of engine, which makes reaching 160mph with a vtwin a little more special.
@hzuiel 120 cid is almost 2 liters and 130 hp from a 2 liter engine is pretty sad. Hell, Honda was making that kind of hp from a 1.6 liter in the mid 80s. I don't mean any insult to Special Olympians, but competing with a handicap and not measuring up to the best is generally what the Special Olympics represents. This bike is the Special Olympian of motorcycles.
@idontcare80 Why do you want to embarass yourself so badly? A honda 1600 nowadays does not produce 125hp, muchless in the mid 80's. Right now a honda vtx1800 puts out about 105-110 hp and 120lb of torque, so they're pretty equivalent for the size difference, except...the vtx weighs 750lbs and the wraith weighs 390. That wraith could outrun a stock hayabusa in a quarter mile.
@idontcare80 There is no honda civic with a vtwin in it you dumbshit. Vtwin /= vtec. There are very few confederate motorcycle owners because they're so expensive, and most rich people don't spend their time making videos for youtube or drag racing their stuff, they're too busy being rich. However I know a 750lb 1670cc yamaha vstar warrior posts a 12.5 second quarter mile, and this bike is 360lbs less with a lot more power. According to wikipedia your shit civic made either 99 or 113hp.
@hzuiel You are the biggest moron I've ever seen. Look at my channel, do you think I could perform an upgrade to the entire drivetrain of my car without understanding the difference between VTEC and a v-twin engine? What exactly is wrong with you? The ZC that I put in my Civic made 130 hp, though, it was a from a '90 Civic. A V Star is a cruiser, not a sport bike. A Hayabusa runs 9s from the factory and so will most 1000cc sport bikes. I searched for Wraith 1/4 mile and the only story I found...
@idontcare80 Also the term cruiser is just generic for a style of bike, that just so happens to commonly have vtwin engines, but there are cruiser styled bikes without twin engines, and there are standard and sport bikes with vtwins, like the 146hp buell 1125r. Harleys are actually a common drag bike because they can be modified to create a lot of horsepower while still having an asston of torque which is very important in drag racing.
@idontcare80 And 92 or 99 ft/lb of torque, this puts out 130 by comparison....and it's a car engine. Totally different design and capabilities. Your incredible ignorance plus the mention of having owned an old shitty civic leads me to guess you are a wannabe street racer that puts noisy exhaust tips on their car and thinks it's fast. Does your car by chance have a half finished(possibly with primer showing) low quality metallic paint job and wheels that are worth more than the car?
@hzuiel ...was about a guy who spent thousands of dollars trying to get his Wraith into the 10s! Torque doesn't mean jack shit (also see my channel for information on that subject), that's why the Wraith is so slow for its power to weight ratio. Also, the CBR919RR made 128 hp in '96, the CBR929RR made 150 hp in 2000, the CBR1000RR made 178 hp in 2008. You, being a fan of the shittiest motorcycle ever made leads me to believe that you have the IQ of a rock. Enjoy your ignorant fantasies, moron.
@idontcare80 Again...cbr's have a different kind of motor...you can't compare the specs of a vtwin and an inline 4 and expect it to correlate somehow. If someone did have trouble getting their wraith to the 10's it's the transmission, the engine has enough power to get it there, and it has a big enough rear wheel. I wasn't even a fan of this bike until i investigate it further because of the shit you burbled out in your first comment which is still just as moronic now that you're trying harder
@idontcare80 to sound like you know something. You pretty well confirmed your status as a pathetic ricer if you even bothered to drop a 130hp engine into an older shittier civic in order to make a mediocre car faster. If you were at least driving an ae86 and going to drift it i would retract that statement but I know ricers and I'm sure all you do it try real hard for pathetic 1/4 times.
After seeing about the bike I did become a fan though. They're all hand made, the one featured in this video
@hzuiel specifically is made most of carbon fiber, even down to the rims. That's just badass. I like how it has that aggressive forward lean too. It's just unique, if you pull up somewhere on one you know there aren't 15 other dudes with the same freakin thing with a different paint job or rims there.
Oh and i'm not sure what you think the vstar being a cruiser has any significance because it does indeed run a 12.5 quarter stock and can pull on an r1 off the line.
@hzuiel What is wrong with you? "It's handmade out of carbon fiber bla bla bla..." Who the fuck cares? It's still performs like shit. And you're right, there is no comparison between a v-twin and an inline 4 because the inline 4s are better IN EVERY WAY POSSIBLE. There are no points for second place.
Also, the reason I swapped a ZC into an old Civic was to try my hand at engine swaps and so I would have a good daily driver while I swapped a K20 into my other Civic. ...
@idontcare80 Maybe I'm just getting too worked up and too involved. It seems like you're at least trying to be respectable, it's just your initial comment was irritating for reasons i've already mentioned. This bike in the video is a modified version of their normal one for top speed and therefore the looks don't matter. it's the same thing as saying a nascar is ugly...who cares, it's purpose isn't to look pretty, it's supposed to go around an oval track and looking good doesn't help that.
@idontcare80 And then the comment about 20hp killed me. The only bikes you would buy nowadays that aren't scooters, with 20hp or less, are chinese made. Anything japanese, american or european makes more than 20, even out of only 250cc motor and this was clearly larger than that before i ever looked up it's specs. And then your following comments just furthered my frustration. Whatever, if you think it looks like crap, whatever, there are people that pay 70+ grand for these bikes, and us
@hzuiel ... It was a great daily driver, it usually got 36-38 mpg and it embarrassed a brand spankin' new G6 and a V6 Camaro. I'd love to see any other car get that kind of mileage and go that quick. The AE86s are ancient and I don't give a fuck about drifting or drag racing, I just want a quick, reliable daily driver. Also, Toyotas are sort of shitty. The only thing that kept me from the K20 swap was me having a kid, which ended all of the plans I had made for my life.
@idontcare80 debating won't change that fact. BTW I have little experience with modding cars, but i've done a lot of maintenance and repair work and know a decent amount about cars and engines, and my car is a subaru impreza sport which is a decently quick and fun car to drive, and I have a buell blast motorcycle that is american made, definitely not a ricer. My next bike will hopefully be a buell 1125cr which is a competitive track bike, but it still has a vtwin engine so it sounds good.
@idontcare80 Even though i'm no longer trying to argue with you i would still like to make a statement though, you said an inline 4 is better in every way possible and there's no comparison....which is right. There is no comparison, they are totally different designs with different goals. The inline 4 has far more moving parts which cuts it's torque, but the high end horse power when the engine reaches high revs makes up for that. A vtwin has a lot of torque which gives a totally different
@idontcare80 riding experience and here's the kicker.....sounds better. Most street bikes sounds kinda cool, but still kind of high pitched and whiny. Some of the cheaper ones do have vtwins, but very small ones, and their exhausts make them sound like farts in a can. A bigger vtwin has the grunt force and it's exhaust sounds menacing, like it's gonna chew you up and spit you out. And with the right modifications, a vtwin and do some serious chewing up and spitting out. LIke a primal growl.
@hzuiel Torque output is most closely tied to displacement and volumetric efficiency. Generally, the bigger the engine, the more torque it produces. Torque does have an effect on the way a vehicle 'feels,' but almost no effect on how it performs. I think American v-twins sound like shit, they either sound like lawn mowers (like your Buell) or like the loudest farts on the planet. I said 20 hp as a joke and because v-twins usually make so little power when compared to the inline 4 powered bikes.
@idontcare80 Buell blasts with a stock exhaust sound like a lawn mower, mine has a vance and hines exhaust. I like how it sounds, especially compared to the bike I had before which was a piece of crap. The 1125r that i mentioned i want to get when i can save up enough money sounds awesome, especially with an aftermarket exhaust, and like i said it's a vtwin, but not american. It's a rotax helicon 1125cc 72degree vtwin. Puts out about 146hp totally stock.
@idontcare80 So it really is like comparing apples and oranges. They similarities like the fact that they're food, and both fruit, and will fill you up if you eat them, neither is really better because their taste is different to every person. Just like not everybody likes the same engines in cars or motorcyles, and though they have their similarities, a vtwin motorcycle engine, something that was designed specifically to fit on a motorcycle and still have a decent sized engine,.
@hzuiel Also, I don't even know why I should be trying to justify myself to you. What do you drive? What kind of work have you done on a car or bike? Who are you to say anything about me?
You: This bike has carbon fiber but it's still slow bla bla bla.
Ricer: I have carbon fiber wing and a fart can on my car but it's still slow bla bla bla.
The front end looks so awkward, I'm all about function over form but this bike tests my limits with the slab sided "forks". I'd be willing to do a test ride and pass judgement on it if anyone is intrested in an unbiased review.
so what was the reason for changing some of the key design aspects from this to the final production version. i truely feel this is just way more pleasing to the eye, even if it would be a little uncomfortable for a daily ride.
It's beautiful. Basically an engine with a couple wheels, minimalism at it's finest. Is this a modified bike or a ground up original? What is it powered by? Looks like an american V. How fast did it go?
The music ("Requiem", look it up) was playing in the minivan when I shot this, so it was fitting to dub it in later. It's also fitting because the rider is no longer with us. If it means nothing to you, keep your flippin mouth shut, because it might mean something to someone else.
This is Gabriel Fauré's Requiem in D minor, Op. 48, and I think it's beautiful. I play Rachmaninov's Vespers when I'm remembering the man in this video. I miss him impossibly.
Chris exemplified courage, and, he is one man I will never forget. I wish I had more footage from that day, but the tapes have been lost. The memories are just as good.
I like to feel sexy....knowing someone is watching me ..wanting me...turns me on!BADLY! hellcat, wraith are awesome bikes...if any of you are familar with the confederate brand...you should look up the WILDCAT that they dont make anymore...the bike is awesome....hands down is a instant classic that cant be matched..thats right...the roadster and or buell bikes take a backseat in my book.
Damn thing has similar lines to a circa 1940 Harley WR flathead racer. This bike has antique lines and has a V twin engine with open primary. Good formula.
This, from a California Yankee,it's good to see you Johnny Rebs up to something constructive.Light or not,the design seems to be;look like a real bike and not have the forks fold up at high speed.f131hellcat---sounds like a fighter plane.
The intent of the Wraith design was not to make a light weight bike, so I don't know how we got on that subject. A benefit of the design is that it happens to be lighter than most American production bikes.
Because of the big ol' twin motor with 270deg firing, we actually did pretty well on the salt in '04, when everyone else was slipping.
Trying to compare this bike to a modern cookie cutter sport bike is like comparing a Honda Civic to a Pagani Zonda.
First, it is a great bike but I dont understand your logic in wanting to run light on the salt. For most forms of racing lighter is better, but not on the salt where the coefficient of drag is overshadowed by the slip coefficient of salt. Most people have to add massive amount of weight to keep their drive tire from spinning @ speed especially in the swing arm.
See you in August Jonny@ Jonny Hotnuts Racing. BFMS, BGMS, GMS & FMS (Powered by Hayabusa)
For speed, they aren't racing for times on the salt so it doesn't matter if it takes a minute to get up to speed so long as they don't run out of straight-a-way. For all the revolutionary designing they don't seem to have all that light of a bike if it weighs 380 pounds, most modern sport bikes weigh in at about 380 pounds and they have more shit on them than this bike.

Witn almost NO front fork rake, it looks like a flat-tracker. I would think it would handle squirily at Bonnevelle. Other than faster pit stops to change the rear tire, what is the advantage of the single swing arm??
The prototype front end in this video is deceptive looking, there's actually 27degrees of rake and 4" of trail. It was very stable at high speeds. Rake has to do with the angle of the steering neck, not the angle of the girder forks. The advantage of the rear single-sider is lightweight. The Wraith weighs 380 pounds.
Excellent! The best example of a purpose built machine without comprimising the design of the bike... this motorcycle has everything you need... nothing more, nothing less.
Why this bike does not have a fat tire it would look really awesome. and also some kind of wheels with minimal spokes like a solid wheel. thoses would be the only changes that i would do.
very nice. good idea with faures "pie jesu"

YOU = RICER.

Looks like some of the tech was "borrowed"
from the Britten V1000.
I don't know why people insist on putting music on there race videos. I know that I would much rather hear the engine
Other than that I must say hats off to these people who have made one beautiful motorcycle.

I like the look of this bike a lot; very 1930s in the very best way. What kind of speeds could they get out of that Harley clone mill? 110 mph or so?
marctenor 4 years ago
I believe they got somewhere in the 155 MPH range at Bonneville with incorrect gearing.

hellcat, wraith are awesome bikes...if any of you are familar with the confederate brand...you should look up the WILDCAT that they dont make anymore...the bike is awesome....hands down is a instant classic that cant be matched..thats right...the roadster and or buell bikes take a backseat in my book.

Just beautiful. Nice to see some truly inspired design.

agree!!!
drivefast6969 4 years ago
The intent of the Wraith design was not to make a light weight bike, so I don't know how we got on that subject. A benefit of the design is that it happens to be lighter than most American production bikes.
Because of the big ol' twin motor with 270deg firing, we actually did pretty well on the salt in '04, when everyone else was slipping.
Trying to compare this bike to a modern cookie cutter sport bike is like comparing a Honda Civic to a Pagani Zonda.
f131hellcat 4 years ago
hey whats the name of the guy who designed it?
theinsane101 4 years ago
Pagani's are beautiful, but I still have a fond place for Civic's too.
beornborg 2 years ago
First, it is a great bike but I dont understand your logic in wanting to run light on the salt. For most forms of racing lighter is better, but not on the salt where the coefficient of drag is overshadowed by the slip coefficient of salt. Most people have to add massive amount of weight to keep their drive tire from spinning @ speed especially in the swing arm.

JHotnuts 4 years ago
For speed, they aren't racing for times on the salt so it doesn't matter if it takes a minute to get up to speed so long as they don't run out of straight-a-way. For all the revolutionary designing they don't seem to have all that light of a bike if it weighs 380 pounds, most modern sport bikes weigh in at about 380 pounds and they have more shit on them than this bike.

Witn almost NO front fork rake, it looks like a flat-tracker. I would think it would handle squirily at Bonnevelle. Other than faster pit stops to change the rear tire, what is the advantage of the single swing arm??
JGMagoo 5 years ago
The prototype front end in this video is deceptive looking, there's actually 27degrees of rake and 4" of trail. It was very stable at high speeds. Rake has to do with the angle of the steering neck, not the angle of the girder forks. The advantage of the rear single-sider is lightweight. The Wraith weighs 380 pounds.
f131hellcat 4 years ago
Excellent! The best example of a purpose built machine without comprimising the design of the bike... this motorcycle has everything you need... nothing more, nothing less.
big30o6 5 years ago
it looks cool but, please tell me it pulled a least 150 mph, I have my doubts
benzo430 5 years ago
Why this bike does not have a fat tire it would look really awesome. and also some kind of wheels with minimal spokes like a solid wheel. thoses would be the only changes that i would do.
jorge037 5 years ago
I'd like to see you design a monoswing with a fat tire with minimal spokes like a solid wheel...
This bike's perfect to me... No matter what people say.
