no it can not do 720p (bah!), and the 1080p is very uncompressed so it chews up memory fast (the video IS very good though). I'm liking this camera very much, but not that the T2i is out I really wish I had waited a few months (even though i'd had to pay almost twice as much)

Hi guys, in order to play full HD videos correctly and smoothly, you will need a powerful computer. If you have a laptop forget it unless you have a laptop with a good processor and a good video card which is difficult. Don't forget it is not about memory it is about processing power. If you have a desktop, the easy way to solve freezing problems while playing HD video is to get a HD video card. Hope it helps.

this isn't really true. I can play hd (from this camera) smoothly on my netbook and my several year old sony vaio laptop. It depends very much on the video player you use. Something like VLC will choke if on an underpowered computer, but try something like kmplayer and you will be shocked (no, this is not a paid endorsement, just try it)

I solved the Sx1 movie jump problem in PC:

convert the archive .mov to mpg2 or avi, with a program. I use Koyote Free video converter. (search it in google). It loose quality, but is the only way I can watch my movies in the PC. The best quality I got is .mov to DVD ( .vob).

before HD became the default for Broadband video, you needed to append &fmt=22 to the URL to get it to play in HD. &fmt=18 for HQ.

Nowadays it defaults to HD for you, or you can press the convenient HD button.

Love the HD mode. Only one drawback is that Canon only lets you record up to 1:30 minutes continuously in HD.

Yes, It's crazy that Canon thinks it's OK to only record 1:30 of video. Sony HX-1 and Casio EX-F1 is 30 min. For that reason alone, I cant get the Canon.

Well if you get that amount of noise in similar conditions as in the video I'd recommend taking the camera back to the store and asking replacement. That sounds like a bad cell.

8GB memory card is around 24 min. 30 sec. of 1080p video do the math for whatever other card sizes

I have this camera with a 32GB memory card and it recorded approximately 100 minutes of full HD video at 1080p 16:9 aspect ratio... vYour best bet is to get a Class 6 or higher SDHC card with this camera

The SX1 cannot display HD itself unless connected to a tv via HDMI. They always remain HD, on and off the camera's SD memory.

If you're planning to do lots of videos, the SX1 is the way to go. Otherwise, take the SX10, which costs way less and has better image quality (for stills), because the ccd has less noise than the cmos used in the sx10.

Yes I can and am in no need of an optician, however, I stick by my original premise: that HD really only applies to those making or watching Blue-ray DVDs, and watching on a proper 1080p TV with HDMI connection.

The internet is not the place to judge HD.

In this country, even HD digital TV broadcasts look better on a conventional TV with conventional scanning and 625 lines.

As far as I am aware YouTube is still using the Flash-player to view videos, even if showing an "HD" function. All videos are converted to Flash to show them.

Although these HD videos look better, sharper and with better definition, they are not true HD in the technical sense of the word. What you see depends on your graphics card, download speed and most of all; your monitor's capability.

Most users are not watching true HD on the net.

Very good quality. Could you please take and upload a video where the camera is panning? I want to buy an SX1 but I read it distorts images (most obvious is a skew of vertical lines) when taking a video and the camera is moving horizontally.
