@massifelix Not as far as I know. I mean, it would have been pretty obvious for the authorities if you drove a VW as a DDR citizen ;) They were probably West Germans why stayed in the DDR for some time.

East Germans now only have the "good" things in mind, not the bad ones, everyone had a job, a flat... today many are in Hartz4, got a flat too, get money from the state, can travel... but with which money? Its frustration, but I don't think its the majority that wants the wall back in the east...

Chamberlain cowered and tried to appease an evil cowardly intimidator and therefore helped build him into a ruthless genocidal dictator. Reagan didn't cower, he wasn't intimidated. He increased the pressure on the soviets whereas if he had been an appeaser you can bet your life the soviets would have made the East Germans crack down. This wall was punishment for what the German Government and people did to the world during world war 2. Most people say it was evil that put up that wall. My opinion is, the wall was to crush evil and weaken a country that deserved its poverty and communist stronghold. Its a shame it had to come to this, but the German people could have avoided this by removing Hitler from power in the early 40's before he killed 6 million Jews.

@TheElliott1972 The only nation that invaded Germany was the USSR, and the USSR treated Germans horribly; they raped hundreds of thousands of German women, looted, burned, killed. But one must remember that the Germans treated them the exact same way during Operation Barbarossa; the Germans considered the Slavs to be a subrace and thus their policies of extermination and slavery of Slavs in occupied East Europe did much to breed hatred against them on the part of Russian soldiers and citizenry.

I was in Berlin until a few days before this kicked off. The city was full of rumours and news from Leipsig and church-based protests in E Berlin. During this time Honecker was trying to decide to use tanks and machine guns against the protestors--copying China a few months earlier. And Gorby told him--if you do you are on your own. That's why HE is thanked at the end.(ie it wasnt Ronald Reagan)

Under communism, the state guarantees everyone a job: there was no need for anyone to work hard.
On the other hand, a lot of East Germans firms were shut down or went bankrupt after unification; there's probably no work now for anyone, lazy or not, in the east of Germany.

The real person to thank is Ronald Reagan. If he hadn't been president then there would still be an East Germany. No doubt about it. Gorbachev tried to preserve the Soviet system, he wasn't able to because it had failed so miserably. To preserve it he would have had to rely on his socialist minions to use the terror that Lenin and Stalin did. The problem was that the minions did not believe in it anymore, they wouldn't fire on the people.

Chamberlain cowered and tried to appease an evil cowardly intimidator and therefore helped build him into a ruthless genocidal dictator. Reagan didn't cower, he wasn't intimidated. He increased the pressure on the soviets whereas if he had been an appeaser you can bet your life the soviets would have made the East Germans crack down. He stood up to the intimidator, unlike the spineless weak European appeasers of Islam.

This wall was punishment for what the German Government and people did to the world during world war 2. Most people say it was evil that put up that wall. My opinion is, the wall was to crush evil and weaken a country that deserved its poverty and communist stronghold. Its a shame it had to come to this, but the German people could have avoided this by removing Hitler from power in the early 40's before he killed 6 million Jews.

But one must remember that the Germans treated them the exact same way during Operation Barbarossa; the Germans considered the Slavs to be a subrace and thus their policies of extermination and slavery of Slavs in occupied East Europe did much to breed hatred against them on the part of Russian soldiers and citizenry.

The USSR was responsible for treating Jews horribly as well; take for example the Katyn massacre in which 40,000 were killed; the USSR successfully pinned it on the Nazis for over 60 years. The USSR launched a counter-invasion of Germany in response to the German invasion of Russia; not to save Jews

Capitalism is beautiful and ideal, and whatever propaganda these east germans had been constantly bombarded with, it was not enough to overpower their inate desire to live and be free - what was healthy in their mind forced them to pile up at those gates. You speak of jibberish: democracy, liberty and solidarity are competing ideas, not cooperative ones.

Stop instrumentalizing the struggle for democracy, freedom for your evil hardcore capitalist agenda. Many East Germans who opposed the the GDR were social democrats, so please learn to differ and stop repeating this mad propaganda.

I wonder what was running through the minds of those DDR border guards at that point in time?
They must've thought "oh fuck it, I want freedom too" & decided to silently mark their protest for freedom.
All the border guards were doing in the past was their job, but to the guards that night on Bornholmer Strasse, I thank you for your decision, I also am glad you people took the motive to tell socialism to stick it.

@GodBotherer1 No doubt there were some of them who were thinking of the people they shot as they were trying to flee to the west. Most of them saw the end of their pathetic power over the lives of others. Being border guards they were in fact part of the top of the society in the DDR. I doubt many of the guards wanted freedom. Freedom for them was freedom from privilege.Now all of a sudden they were irrelevant, superfluous, and also guilty of murder.

I was in Berlin until a few days before this kicked off. The city was full of rumours and news from Leipsig and church-based protests in E Berlin. During this time Honecker was trying to decide to use tanks and machine guns against the protestors--copying China a few months earlier. And Gorby told him--if you do you are on your own. That's why HE is thanked at the end.(ie it wasnt Ronald Reagan)

@CobinRain You are missing the point. "Gorby" would not have abandoned Honecker if the leader of the free world had been a weak, spineless, appeaser. @Indygoguy Reagan is sold to Americans as the man who brought down communism. I have never met anyone who wasnt an American who thought so.And yes, Gorby did abandon Honecker; that's exactly what happened. Honecker had refused to introduce perestroika and glasnost; they were more hardline than the soviets. But if the VOPOS had started shooting people in the Alexanderplatz..do you think Reagan had the "nobility and strength" to send in the marines? If you do you are dimmer even than I thought.

The fact that you do not seem to understand is that the dictators in the Ussr and the satellite countries knew they were dealing with a strong man. His mere words "Mr. Gorbachev, Bring down this wall" were words that a Jimmy Carter or a Bill Clinton or an obsama would never utter. The soviets knew they couldn't have their way with him, he was like a rock.
