I am just collecting an information about the small budget films and just want to know which cameras do they use for their films. Is anybody know about that?
hi blackie, we go through this in the video called something like 'pmwex1 and final cut pro'.
if you connect this camera to your computer, or put the disc into a drive like the pdw-u1 or pdw-u2, you follow the same procedure. sony's pdzk1 xdcam transfer software extracts the footage into .mov files
hey, does this record to a small tape? or does it record to a hard drive that is built in. because I have been looking fr a camera, not as much priced as this one and not as Huge as this one, but Im looking to buy a camera that is Hard drive, professional and does not cost more than... £4,000 I know it sounds quite tricky but I was only wondering thanks.
@RadioRock97 this camera records to xdcam discs, a removable media similar to blu-ray. you might want to check out the Sony HXR-NX5, although it might not be enough camera for you, it has a killer hard drive option.
you should also consider the AJA Kipro, which will record the output of ANY camera to its hard drive in apples pro-res codec.
As far as I can see, this is the only camera that gives you a real HD picture, not that 540 to 800 lines crap they try to tell people. But sadly me or anyone else who wants real sharp HD can't afford it. I've seen the pictures from the EX3 and the HPX302 and they aren't that sharp.
Great Video. Can you delete the footage on the disc after it's transfer to a harddrive and ready to edit on Final Cut Pro? Or is the disc a write once? How many different storage capacity's are there?
Jesse you are right. Red Scarlet isnt good yet if u are a proffesional and need to make a living at the moment cus Red Scarlet is not out yet. So, Red Scarlet VS this camera u win, but why not buy the Red One instead then? Better that this Sony and I believe its alot cheaper. And its out! Or what do u think mate?
hi Crusty. the red one is a viable tool for film/television production. the price point is somewhat misleading, as $17k won't get you a complete unit. after the appropriate accessories, you'll end up spending $30k. then you'll need someone who can rangle the raw data, plus all the additional hard drive space necessary to work with it.
also, tough to shoot handheld. it is not a news camera.
the PDW-700 is perfect for freelance and news camera ops who need HD, and a file-based workflow.
Well, with better quality comes more responsibility, right? I wont be judging you anymore, I know the Sony is a great Ready-made camera which is easier to work with. But theres also a big amount of us with less money but still want incredible quality and dont mind the workflow being that much harder. Thanks !
thanks for writing Crusty. if i can ever help get a project in under your budget, please let me know. sales, rentals, repairs, systems installations. we handle it all. mention your youtube comments for a special discount
Really awesome video!I want a camera like that for making my videos.I'm going to be a cameraman and I want to have that camera like on the video.Really awesome video, love your videos dude! :D
yes, i am sure about the 24p. June 2009. sony will offer a special rebate on the upgrade board... details to follow. at this time, i do not believe over/undercrank is a planned feature.
You DO NOT want to put an SD lens on that camera. If you test it out, you'll definitely see the difference. But it's a fine ENG camera, if only the XDCAM discs were archival by themselves. It would save video librarians a lot of time if they didn't have to dub everything to hard drive AND tape :/

actually, even a $200 handheld has a slow shutter function, so it is more of a standard pack rather than a new cool stuff.

And how many minutes for 1 GB.

thanks for writing.
you 'can' delete files and re-use the disc, but you shouldn't really.
it's only $38 per 23GB disc, which holds between 45 min and 2 hours, depending on your data rate
