Hard to choose between this version and the one on The John Coltrane Quartet Plays. That being said why choose? Enjoy them both!!! His interpretation of classics is unparalleled :My Favorite Things, Summertime, Softly as in a Morning Sunrise, Nature Boy-need i say more?
Mesmerizingly great. The improvisational diversity takes you to places in his mind that can only be translated through that horn. You don't have to be too cerebral to appreciate it though because its aesthetically beautiful as well to the ears. What a journey.
This is my favorite Coltrane song, and you never hear live versions. This is the song where you can hear him really master the soprano, he never used it as much after this album. On the album version, when Coltrane comes in for the last couple minutes, it's one of the quartet's finest moments.
its all minor and uses a darker mode than the standard minor scale, such as Phrygian and phrygian with a natural 6th instead of the usual flatted 6th...and plenty of bitonal minor pentatonics
Yeah it's on the album "The John Coltrane Quartet Plays", an excellent album which is overshadowed by "A Love Supreme" which I think cam right after it?
And I agree, it has a much darker sound than "My Favorite Things." Part of that is because it doesn't have a Major key section.
@tranelives91 love your name-in early '70's there was a show on M.I.T. radio called Coltrane Lives-pure ecstasy-he may be gone but he'll always be with us.
Yeah, I like it a lot better than My Favorite Things, too. A short version is in the complete studio box set, and it's great (I don't remember which individual album). It's kind of sad to me that My Favorite Things seems to be the more played/recorded/sold more of the two.
I don't know exactly how to describe the difference between the two songs. Chim Chim Cheree sounds more minor key, maybe? Or it just that the progression resolves differently? What am I hearing?
My Favorite Things was probably more popular to due to it's more upbeat melody and the fact that Coltrane played it far more. I like any standard Coltrane put his own spin on.
Nobody has ever come close! He was a shaman!
