I have a 6 year old cat who was never potty trained. She was born and raised indoors, but no matter what we did, no matter what litter we used, or even dirt for that matter, she just kept and keeps going on the carpet...everywhere except for where the litter boxes are. We even let her go outside, but then she'd wanna come back in, do her business on the rug, then go back out. Instinct was not equipped in this cat. -_- Feel sorry for her though, she has a limp in her back leg, so no more outside.

Hey Steve, those things work best if you have a young cat,, or better yet a kitten. I'm sure they work, but your cats are just to old to learn, if you will, anything that isn't the litter box. So if you decide to get another cat it might work.

Steve, my cat Charm does the same thing as Sylvester: She drops a crap but doesn't bother burying it. Have no idea why. Sometimes, if it's particularly foul, my other cat Jinx will bury it for her. I have no idea why I wanted to share that with you, but it seemed really important at the time.

Don't worry about the cat toilet thing not working out- I think you discovered for yourself what a disaster it can be when they decide they don't like it!  Also, it gets hard for cats to use it when they're old and arthritic. If Sylvester isn't burying his 'business', try putting out another box. He may be leaving it there to mark his territory. Or, he may not like the feel of the litter anymore.

Oh, and please get Shelby spayed. Pleeeeease. :)

Steve, please take my advice on this. Get the silicon crystal kind of kitty litter. It is by far the best kind of litter I have ever used, and I have used just about all of them. The liquid gets completely absorbed into the silicon, so you don't have to deal with it like other litters. As for the solids, the crystals are not as fine as other litters, so when you scoop it up there is a lot less dust. The 2 brands I know of are Fresh Step and Mimi Litter(which is half the price of Fresh Step).

Hahahahahahaa... Something to know about cats. The reason they cover their litter is because they are essentially saying "I'm not the alpha in this house" It's a sign of respect to cover their feces. Kitty is telling you that he is the Alpha in the house by not covering it. ;) Just thought you'd like to know the reasoning for it.

My black lab got knocked up when I was a kid and had 14 puppies. 2 were stillborn so we had to find homes for the other 12. That's house breaking 12 dogs, getting 12 puppies vaccinated and teaching them basic commands so they were sellable. Steve, have you tried eliminating the "splash" factor? If you put a bit of toilet paper in the bottom of the toilet they may be more likely to use the toilet. The splashing sound of waste falling into the bowl deters some cats. Im currently trying to toilet train my cat, though without a store-bought device, and so far Ive gotten her to use a bowl of litter in the toilet but she simply INSISTS on having all four feet in the litter. If I try to move her, she just gets upset and walks out on me...

@Lycosization I havent heard or seen any such psychological downsides to toilet training, but it should not have any such repercussions. Cats (and large wild cats) have the burying instinct because in the wild they needed to hide the scent of their waste to better hunt for their prey and prevent from being preyed upon. So you see, cats simply do not like the smell- and using the restroom in water eliminates that smell factor (thats why we humans do it).

You know i love ya Steve! And don´t want to sound like a moral bitch. But just want to mention that this toilet training has its downsides. Cats has the natural need to scratch over and cover their droppings, and with this kind of method they cant do that. This isn´t very sound for cats in general. Some dont care, but others can suffer pshycological downsides when they cant behave natural as they should.
