I am in the industrial industry myself, I feel sorry for this guy, sheesh his arm was just cut off. just think of his fellows co workers that may be around or an innocent bystander. Sorry to hear bud, i do understand the fundamentalist of the operator. I just hope you followed all first aid procedures.. in most companys they have a first aid course, and its well worth the time you put into it, especially when it comes to workplace incidents.

Its the general public who have no clue what they are talking about that makes this look bad. If you knew what the hell you were talking about you would know that no matter what the person says the dispatcher MUST ask those questions.....Its part of a process called EMD (Emergency Medical Dispatch) or pre arrival instructions. It is policy and procedure to ask those type of questions.

I can understand people dissing the operator, however she seems like she is following a very guided set of protocols. Her job is one, to get the basic info, which she did, two, get him help, which was on it's way, and three, to keep him calm, stay calm herself, and keep the man coherent and talking until help arrives. She may sound like your "english teacher", or a "cunt" as someone else put it, but her job was followed fairly well from my understanding. Poor man though.

Not necessarily, if I recall correctly, the body have natural way of stopping blood flow of any serious damage that occurs to the blood system. Blood flow can stop after certain amputation due to constriction of vessels and arteries. She is merely following a correct protocol to ensure that the man receive proper instruction. If he was still SEVERELY bleeding, instruction for drastic measures are given. If it is nothing but continuing trickling of blood, mild measures are given.

If his arm is completely off along with artery, then the artery will naturally constrict as a form of defense mechanism against excessive blood loss. Would blood stop completely? Not really, but constriction would prevent excessive blood flow.

What the operator is trying to do is to figure out whether or not to allow him to use tourniquet. It would be unnecessary if his blood flow can be stopped by heavy clothing wrapped around.

It is actually VERY not recommended to use a torniquet, as it doesn't work for the arms and limbs because most of the arteries are inside too close to the bone to be stopped.

Also it isn't going to stop bleeding by itself, Congeeling doesn't happen when a whole artery is shreded, only when a vein is.

There is NO WAY that this fella would survive if you were to try and let it stop on it's own...

wrong that is a myth Iraq and Afganistan have prooved that torniquet works wonders in stopping bleeding. It used to be thought that it would kill the tissue on the other side but it can last up to 8 hours and still return to full use.
