Pause the video at :50. This is at 9.60 in the race. Take a look at the field. At this moment, Bolt has crossed the line in his WR. Steps behind him are a slew of times from 9.69 to 9.8. Scores of times exist in this range over the decades.
@AllanWellsFan Yes I remember - he got beaten by Panzo (France) in the 100 but blitzed the 200m. I think there was a false start so it was at the 2nd attempt. I wish he hadn't put his arms up at the end as he might of run an even faster time. The thing about copyright is that often people never get to see great clips. It's like the end of Raiders of the Lost Ark where you just see rows and rows of unopened boxes. We'll be past drawing our pensions by the time they're released. Pity.
Christian Haas had such turbo starts but unreliable finishes,Woronin again under-achieved here, and the young pretender Frank Emmelmann had a baptism of fire at the hands of Allan Wells. Golden Sprints 100 winner Herrman Panzo was also beat in this race, so it was a very worthy Championships for Wells to win.
I remember when it was run, they initially clocked Wells at 10.14, but the right time was 10.17. Excellent victory though, and set Wells pathway for a supurb season.
Allan Wells was the steeliest athlete of all. He never gave an inch. It's not fair that Wells is footnoted in the golden era of British athletics compared with the mid-d runners. He was more accomplished than some remember, clearly the world's number 1 sprinter in 1980 and 81.

Performances in the 100 have come a long way.
