I'm not opposed to what you're doing as I'm 100% pro-cycling in every aspect of it, but I do dub thee a good Christian, as you obviously choose not to accept Darwin's theory of natural selection.
That was some pretty stupid route..Choosing to go between cars when there's so much space at your left, with no incoming traffic..You are just waiting to get sandwiched between two cars.
Don't get me wrong. I do it too, but only when there's no other safer/faster route.
PS: You can see it's just pure show for the camera. The bike lane still had plenty off room.LOL
@ramoncano20 - I was passing cars and rush hour drivers faster than their honk reflex could reasonably kick in. By the time they became enviously jealous of me breezing through traffic and raised their hand to their horn, I was already gone, out of their sight.
TL;DR No honks because I was moving fast and never in anyone's way.
That's the beauty of this video. I'm moving through unoccupied road space while not inconveniencing anyone.
@bulletproofcourier You are in inconveniencing them. The fact that you, a measly bike rider, can have a far more productive commute than they can with their two ton, gas guzzling hunk of metal is causing an absurd amount of stress from jealousy that they otherwise wouldn't have to deal with.
"I have years of experience which keeps me safe." Douchebag, not that I give a fuck if you get run over, nor do I think you're some kind of idiot for riding through traffic, anyone can do this. So you put your little caption in to make you feel like a hero! But honestly, years of experience keeps you safe on a closed course where the vehicle drivers know you're there, not in the middle of a public road where drivers are startled. to see you! You're a fuckin' loser, get a life fucko!
what an ass robertson is...green agenda nazi...wasting tax payers money on a project that does nothing other than kill business...i live/work downtown and see little bike traffic in those lanes even on sunny days...and i see as many bikes riding down any other street or sidewalk as on the dedicated lanes....on the sidewalk even on the streets with a bike lane (figure that one out)....what a shill...selling us out to the f'ing tides foundation/agenda21/ICLEI/eugenicist bastards...
I love my little pickup, but I support cycling. I like to cycle for fun, but hey, the more people are on bikes, the easier traffic is. Why can't cager ragers get that? How hard is it to pass a bike in a 300hp car? Oh wait, it is hard when you are looking at the ass end of a 3 mile traffic jam. Bikes are great. Some anti-bikers are so lame, they yell at you for not "waiting in line" behind them in their Selfish Useless Vehicles.
Look at all the cars in the video, how many of them have only one passenger in them? Taking all that space causing more traffic creating traffic, while cyclist ride past them. I think most of the anger at cyclist is due to the fact that they hate being stuck in traffic burning gas and money away. Face facts people gasoline is not going to get cheaper.
I drop my kid off on a tandem bike every morning and ride down the center of the street between cars going opposite directions every day. Better than trying to park. I don't stop at the stop sign because my bike weighs 55 pounds but if you don't stop I'll catch up to you at the school and yell at you.
I do the same shit in van, I'm not a courier though. My trick, is to hold a bumper on the way up the hill, that can be a sketchy though people really like to speed on that bridge. Fixies and road bikes are bunk, 4 yuppies who like spandex. gimme 20 inch wheels, no brakes, and 1 gear and I'll own anyone on city streets
What gives you the right to be so close to, and possibly damage peoples cars?
With NO insurance no less.
If I drove like that with my car, between transport trucks, I'd go to jail. Plain and simple. It's NO WONDER so many of you are hit and killed every year.
Stay on the side where you belong. If you swim with the sharks ,you're gonna get bit.
WTF gives you the right to destroy our planet with your gas guzzling suvs...get your cars off my bike lanes, lazy asshole. the whole downtown core of vancouver should be a car free zone, with only transit and commercial vehicle access
You suck! I fucking hate you hipster idiots riding in traffic, get a fucking car! how do you drop your kids off at school? on a bike, go jogging if want cardio that's what i do. You fucking bike hippies are scum and I fight ppl like you in traffic, I better not see you in Vancouver, get back to your job at Starbucks!
@area51er6 BAHAHAHAHAHAHA, that is quite honestly one of the funniest posts I've read in my life. I must say, "bike hippies" are so much more enjoyable than people like you. I just ask, why all the hate?
This is totally soft. I do stuff like that every day. Not dangerous, not reckless, just fast and sensible riding. Search for "Bike messengers are on crack" if you want to see something really insane. :-)
@DarkoBWM I grew up on MTB, those skills transferred well to being a bike messenger able to cross the city fast while having fun - riding up and down stairs, hopping curbs, jumping over urban obstacles, show-off wheelie drops off bus stop benches etc.
My trademark move was jumping my bike over small dogs on the sidewalk.
Can't do any of that on a roadie or a fixed-gear. Those bikes move in 2 dimensions only. For short trips, a road-tuned mountain bike moves faster than a fixie in a 3D city.
@bulletproofcourier That's cool man. I grew up racing BMX then went to MTB/Road bike so when I'm on my roadie I always want to bunnyhop/jump up curbs but I have to remind myself I'm on my roadie hahah.
Nothing like messing around on a MTB through the city though
it's no big deal, most of the cars are predictable here and moving quite slow. What he does is same old same old for any cyclist in any city. Move onto a major thorofare where the traffic is doing 90km/hr and it's another story... really you're just making honest bike users look bad. Typical idiot bike User if you ask me. .. and how many red lights do you run through daily ? ..Irresponsible moron, not bullet proof.
I'm a regular bike commuter and I try to ride responsibly and predictably. As much fun as it was to watch your video and feel the excitement I rather think that this video is not doing much to promote safe cycling.
If it just you, and no one cares about you, the only thing at risk is the public expense to scrape you off the road and get you fixed up in our wonderful public hospitals.
But if have children relying on you to come home in one piece, or loved ones who care, you should reconsider the risk reward tradeoff of such behavior. The probabilities of serious injury arising from no fault of your own are significant and the payoff of getting of that bridge 45 seconds faster...
On an unrelated note.....how are you liking the new bike lane on dunsmuir? I think its a great idea....yet I am ALWAYS seeing cars blatantly ignoring the no right turn sign on Hornby street which pisses me off in more ways than you could ever know....not only does it completely STOP car traffic on dunsmu...but its a HUGE hazard for the bikers who think they have a dedicated lane and all of a sudden some lady in a CRV is blasting through it illegally.....sigh!
@spacemanspiff33 My routine has changed so I've ridden the new Dunsmuir bike lane only twice. I think its pretty neat, I'm planning another helmet cam there next week.
Regarding the illegal, unsafe right-turns by cars: these separated bike lanes are new here; hopefully downtown drivers will catch on soon.
However, I would be interested to know if more prominent and "strongly-worded" road signage would elicit better compliance from drivers.
sigh, as cool as this video is, it scares the crap out of me when a biker lane splits like that.....thank god theres a proper bike lane on that bridge now :)
@spacemanspiff33 Yes thank god for the proper bike lane. Filming that video was scary. :)
Generally, it is much safer to split lanes than to ride in the right-hand crunch zone... much less chance of a car door opening suddenly in front of you.
But of course, there's a trade-off - passing within inches of rear-view mirrors.
The secret is to cut down your handlebars to the width of your shoulders. Kind of like how a cat's whiskers help it judge if it can squeeze through a tight space or not.
You couriers are crazy. But riding in traffic does make you fast. When I lived in the USA I rode in traffic all the time. The training helped me win the 1000m time trial and 1000m match sprint in my district back in 1980. I don't have the reflexes for that anymore haha...
I used to do this when i lived in vancouver!! There's always people clogging up the bike lane. I heard that they were removing a lane and making it a dedicated bike lane? Is this true?
sometimes they open a car door without looking....its amazing how far a car door can open when a bike is pushing it, all the way to the front fender.....
@alexwarrior1 HAH! worried about an arm? there are bigger things to worry about than an arm coming out a window.. namely the vehicles themselves (lane changes/ blind spots)
