  • more like amazing dave matthews scat...

  • Tims playing style reminds me of Mahavishnu John McLaughlin...

  • jimi thing

  • what song was dave singing in the beginning?

  • @rigab0o0 The whole thing is Jimi Thing, he's just doin some scat during the jam, he does it all the time.

  • thanks for posting been a big fan of tims for a long time

  • Another thing alot of people dont realize is that tim himself says "i only play the wrong notes" (quote from "so damn lucky" bonus film on the dave and tim dvd from radio city if u dont beleive me)

even for those of u who dont know music theory, u have to know who ur critisizing before doing so. that is tims style and is what makes him jaw-dropping

  • i just got the exact same flying V Tim is playing with in this video! seeing him play one made me want one.

  • If your a master at your element, like Carter Beauford has already described Tim as, very rarely will you ever be confined to a single key. The guitar scale is gigantic and if you know your complete way around it, it will never matter what key the song originally is in, because the possibilities are endless. You'll play maybe around that key that song started in but you'll never have to be limited to only that. That's the beauty of jazz improv. As long as you know your instrument. You'll be fine

  • actually since literally all music is played in a key then yes.. you absolutely do have to solo in a "key" it is a literal, physical impossibilty to solo or play any type of music without playing it in a "key" If i choose to solo in "G" and the song I am soloing over is in "E" its gonna sound like total ass!! read for ten seconds on some music theory dragonmaster

  • Thats correct obviously Tim Reynolds has an amazing understanding of music theory, its Called Improvising. sorta like jazz & blues which is what this is.

  • Have you ever heard of jazz?

Look up the chords to Giant Steps and tell me key thats in.

  • coltranes song is actually recorded in three different keys shifted by major thirds creating an augmented triad. I believe the keys coltraine played them in was Gmajor, Bmajor, and Ebmajor. but thanks for asking bckyrboogie. ALL MUSIC IS PLAYED IN A KEY. that is just the way it is. no way around it

  • The chords constitute the key of the moment yes, but, to say it is in a key is wrong. There are keys per measure in that song essentially. and it still is very difficult to put the first two chords in the same key, Bmaj7 and D7 are not in a key together. Key's are guidelines not boundaries, which is how you are dictating them.

    I know Tim personally BTW.

  • if i came across like i was critisizing tim i was not. no doubt he is an amazing guitarist and i am a huge fan. He is top three as far as my favorite guitarists go and not just because of DMB. i actually prefer his solo acoustic stuff.

  • Oh I didn't think you were, I was just throwing that out there.

  • I like to "think" that Tim doesn't "think"

    he just IS

    word is

  • and you knowing Tim personally adds what to this discussion.

maybe you could tell us what he thinks?

  • what key is flight of the bumblebee? :P

  • hahahahaha.

    good joke and sarcasm...

    right?

  • I cant figure out what key he is soloing in!! AHH SOMEONE PLEASE TELL ME

  • you dont have to solo in a certain key. most of the best guitarists in the world dont think "ok Solo in D!" The sooner a guitarist gets away from "keys" the fast they progress.... but to answer your question it is generally in G

  • I think you need to learn more about what music theory entails before you run your mouth,

a musical key is a collection of notes which work together in our ear. they encompass all notes. so no matter what you play you're playing one key or another, whether you like it or not....

Oh, and he's not soloing in G, the song is in the key of E. He solos in E but is using a couple of different scale systems.

  • A guitarist doesn't just throw out a key that's unrelated to the present key, but they can play in modes, which means that they play in the key of the present chord in the chord progression, regardless of the overall key of the song. That's how many guitarists make their solos so powerful, by switching from the songs key to the key of the present chord in the progression.

  • i saw timmy at the gorge in washingtong with dmb last year and it was the best concert ever it bet be this good this up coming year

  • Saw TR3 last night in Bend Oregon, it was phenomenal. This band is tight and Tims playing is top notch! A great great show!

  • Wow. If only he was as good at being a permanent member of the band as he is at playing guitar.

  • He's with em again in the spring, we can only hope it becomes a permanent thing

  • He'll never be a member of DMB, he want's his freedom...

  • that was pretty sweet. a sick solo, and some great scatting by dave too

  • Umm....I'm pretty sure it is

  • Oh my god!! He's incredible!!!!

was that Jimi Thing? they groove so hard, man.

  • yes it is!
