Yup, had a cup of water superheat on me when I was a kid. New microwave - more powerful then the previous one but set the same time. Went to add sugar and the whole thing boiled out onto the bench. Glad it didn't splash me. After that I used the kettle
Oh, it was rainwater, so probably a little cleaner than the tap water of the time (was supposed to be the hardest tap water in the country at the time...)
Bubbles don't just form because of "impurities" in the water; tiny irregularities on the sides of a container are what causes most bubbles to form, the smoother the container the more chance of superheating.
I just had this happen to me an hour ago. I was attempting to boil tap water in a clear glass coffee cup. I put it in for 4 mins...no boil, added a min...no boil. added another min...when it was almost done the water suddenly exploded with enough force to blow the door open and it smacked me in the head. No harm done just water everywhere. It forced me to wipe out the microwave, though, which needed to be done.
I heat a mug of tapwater in a 1000 watt (actual power output) micro for 1 min. 20 sec.for just the right temp.for my liking. No safety problem for that amount of time.
Its possible to superheat tap water, just add a little bit of dishwashing soap and microwave it. It exploded with a very loud pop and blew the door open and my hand was covered in soapy water. The whole microwave was also drenched in soapy water and I cleaned it, it was spotless after!
This happened to me, I was microwaving water in a glass and even though it was tap water it started boiling spontaneously and only a tiny bit was left, my grandma had it happen to her to while she was making hot chocolate once also. Definitely can happen to anyone.
And this has to do with breaking the surface tension suddenly. I am so lucky my jam jar did not shatter and that I did not get burns or glass shards in my skin. The force of the water did hurt my eye though. Hit me on my rt. side and my rt. ear too. Don't try this guys. Let your water cool for a bit before putting ANYTHING in it. I think I am only using a kettle here on in. I've never used a kettle before! Seriously scary *^%&!
I was getting into the shower n I went to boil a bit of water to clean my toothbrush before I jumped in. I was shirtless (can you say bad luck?) n I heated about two or three inches of bottled water in a jam jar (the kind you use in pressure cooking). I probably heated it for a minute or two, and as I stared at it in the microwave I subconsciously knew what was about to happen. It exploded as soon as I put my toothbrush in--shot the toothbrush clear across the room. The noise KILLED my ears.
@mrturtlebobington A smooth, ceramic or glass cup and some distilled water. Boiling it for a few minutes before hand is good too since that gets all dissolved gasses out of the water.
I have never gotten scalded because I don't hold the cup when I am making the coffee. I get a spoonful of Taster's Choice & drop the instant coffee into the cup of just-boiled water. I don't know if Taster's Choice is more likely than other brands to cause this. At any rate, O great Mythbusters, back to the drawing board on your experiments.
I testify that this is very likely to happen when making coffee with tap water. I do not use distilled water. How could they make such false statements? Is their tap water so full of city chemicals & crap? I recommend they analyze their tap water.
@Thunkful2 most likely, where are you from? if you're from a small town or have a filter attached somewhere in your house it could explain why your tap water is more pure.
I have the same phenomenon whether I use tap water or bottle Spring water. Get you some Ozarka Spring water (or any other brand). Bring the water just to boil. Pull the cup out. Drop a spoon full of Taster's Choice in & watch the coffee (no longer boiling) suddenly erupt out of the mug. I routinely drop just a few crystals in & stir once before adding the rest of the coffee. Try this with tap water also.
When I make coffee w/ a microwave, this H2O is likely to explode when I put the instant coffee powder into the water. The water jumps out of the cup. To prevent this I 1st add a tiny amount of coffee & stir it; then I add the rest of the coffee powder. I do not use distilled water. I want minerals in my coffee. I usually use spring water.
I didnt believe this at all until it happened to me today. Ive just moved into student accommodation and dont have a kettle, our oven is crap so i tried using the microwave (even though i'd seen this before), i forgot id left it in and heated it up later, as soon as i dropped the teabag in it just exploded, mug smashed. luckily i was so paranoid that i was wearing oven gloves :)
My mom just forwarded me an e-mail warning me about this. I was just about to reply to her, "Mom, you're worring too much. That's impossible bullshit." Then I watched this...
True, I got burnt really serious cause of overheated water in radiator. When I opened it pressure got lower and water exploded on my right hand and chest.
@pvc988 Did you wait hours. Like 6-10 hours? I mean, how long did you think it takes aluminum or iron to dissipate an intense amount of heat. Oh, well. Now you know.
This happened to me with tap water also. I heated water for instant coffee, took it out and when I added the powder it spewed all over the counter. At least half the water in the cup erupted. It's no joke when it happens. I've read that is the inside of the container has no scratches or flaws for bubbles to form on this can happen.
@masm60 The Mythbusters claiming that it had to be distilled is bunk. I too got tap water to do this in the same way you did, and our tap water is heavy in minerals, mostly calcium.
They should not speak in absolutes. You CAN Super-Heat tap water, because I did it. It didn't make a weak fountain of water, either. 8oz of water turned to steam instantly. 3rd degree burns on my left hand and arm. It hurt badly and was hard to keep clean, and got infected. Spread the word... be careful with your microwave.
wax does tht have the same result if u heat it to a point then transfering it ti another containier and will hurt....even just a drop hurts like hell and will instenly blister....how do i know this....just happened to me 30 min ago
I had this happen to me the other day, luckily it wasn't as fast or as violent as this.
I was at a family camp and some old lady was heating water in the microwave for tea, but the microwave was on the floor so i offered to take it out for her, after i did she handed me the tea bag and i put it in and it started boiling, i quickly set it down and moved my hand away before it started to erupt over the sides
But why use a microwave to boil water in the first place? Someone can get seriously hurt doing that, what's wrong with a saucepan for reheating? You have more control over the temperature and not tempted to stir because it will heat evenly.
Wow, this would explain why water exploded all over me when I was trying to boil some water. I tried asking this on Y/A and everyone thought the cup was not microwave safe. I'm pretty sure all my cups are microwave safe accept for a few that I don't use.
I live in Iceland and our hot water is heated until it boils, this means that if you put hot water from the sink into the microwave and heat it it will explode when you put e.g. a bag of tee into it. Very entertaining, I do it for fun sometimes
Yeah my physics teacher back in college told us that once he reheated a cup of tea in the microwave and when he put the spoon in the mug the tea "exploded".
Glad I finally found this clip to help explain it to on of my friends :)
A really smooth container will do the trick too. In chemistry, we ALWAYS put a popsicle stick in the water, just so the water has a place to nucleate (form bubbles and not superheat).
i seriously just didn't actually suspect I would personally hear about this actually happen. i think it was 4 days ago justin bieber had been heading out of a wrestling match then justin started shouting and became extremely mad at his famous girlfriend, nextsecondsafter justin set outhitting his own pretty partner. justin has now been placed in a state jail in colorado, you will find video clips of the fight going downfrom-(wildfootagenow.au.mn)
@silentscratch In this case, they are not mythbusting. They know it's true, so they don't need to "confirm" it. The point it just to demonstrate it to people.
Lots of people live in places where tap water is undrinkable. For minor problems, a filter system is fine, but there are lots of places where filter systems are not practical or widely available.
A distiller is easy and cheap compared to a filter system and provides much more consistent results too (filters become less effective gradually).
I use a distiller for all my drinking water, but I don't have a microwave... I know people that have both though.
I have had this happen to me a number of times actually. Enough so I'm wary when taking a cup of water out of the microwave. I often heat water for use with instant cappuccino, and I've been burned enough! It's certainly no myth!
ive done instant ice with water too, grab yourself some stark water-cooling water, grab some normal water stick them both in a freezer and check every 30 mins till the normal one is frozen then take the stark, then touch it, boom instant ice.
@matacksthedude No... that's not what they are trying to say. The same concept applies with the opposite of this, which is Super Cooling. Most liquids act like this, especially water, but they must be pure or damned near pure. If you have 0 disturbances or impurities, the water can be heated beyond boiling point or cooled below freezing point and retain it's same at room temperature state physically. Of course,if you feel it, you'll know it's not at room temperature. If disturbed, they react.
I get this two to three times a month just making tea. I microwave a mug of tap water and drop in the tea infuser and all hell breaks loose. You get used to it. One thing I found that works to prevent it is just throw a piece of tea in the mug (I drink loose leaf oolong) and that makes thing boil properly but sometimes I am lazy and forget.
Water boils at 100 deg C 212 F, It will bubble and evaporate at 1 bar/14.7 psi (one atmosphere), and its liquid volume will start to reduce and its vapour volume increase. Whether the water is pure or contains impurities won't make any difference whatsoever. If it is heated beyond this temperature when the pressure is increased it will superheat until it starts to boil. Then if the pressure is suddenly decreased, it will explode and turn into vapour (steam). Try it with a pressure cooker.

The real question is how long does it take the average microwave to superheat water at max settings? Am I likely to be burned if I leave it in for 5 mins? 10 mins? 15 mins? And lets say we were testing this in a CLEAN glass with distilled water.
If any of this is true then there is a state of water that no scientist has desribed yet - clearly if you add sugar or salt to water which disolves instantly you have changed the boiling point and you should expect an explosion but adding heat to water at 100 C or 212F causes bubbles to form and boiling to occur UNLESS the water is UNDER PRESSURE.
@rowdon the other guy was right. heat energy is used to increase the temperature, but boiling point/freezing point is due to the energy build up (not really but thats the best description i can come up with) and the state changes. imagine if someone threw a beach ball at you lightly, then you punted it hard. it would increase in speed etc due to the increase in energy. vitamins etc would use up more energy, as it would be absorbing it as well.
That is so F**king crazy! This happen to me just about 10min.
I was boiling water NOT into microwave but on my cooking range to make pasta and I was waiting about 10 min, and than I was like c'moon I'm not gonna wait you for a day be quicker, than i thought to touch the water to check is it hot or not,but i changed my mind and I went to check what's new on FB, and after 30 sec I heard that sound, when i came back there was water everywhere in radius of half a meter.
It happened to me with tap water! Fortunately it happened when it was still in the mircowave so the only effect was that the door slammed open. I guess it's some kind of metastable phase like overcooled liquid water.
I can say for a fact this is true. I was nuking some water to make tea in a pyrex messuring cup. i hit the timer for 3 minutes...no boil. I added aother minute...no boil. Again, again, again. Thinking my microwave was broken but still wanting my morning earl gray i bent down to get a pot out of the cabenit. Just then the microwave door flew open wih a bang and a huge puff of scalding water and steam came shooting out. Like he said, not very likely but there are alot of microwave users out there.
i haven't replied to this in a long time but as i've seen from the comments i shall do a mass reply of stuff
the volume - i didn't realise when i did it or uploaded but yes it is a tad loud, my bad
as i've read from the number of comments you do not need distilled water and you can do this impure things and not just water either i was just going by the vid about this as i couldn't be bothered to check it out anymore than that.
and microwaves are more fun that that so go experiment with them
actually it really happened to my dad he wanted to make mulled wine in the microwave. After 2 minutes he takes out the win and in this moment it explodet very much to his surprise.
so remember don't make you mulled wine hot in the microwave^^
This happened to me, I was reheating my coffee! Luckily I wast holding the mug while I was stirring... I took the mug out the oven, laid it on the table, and as I as about to stirr, I grabbed the handle of the mug so that it would be stable.. and as soon as the spoon landed in the mug .. BOOM! it splattered everywhere! it rose up from the bottom.. like a fountain... my hands got little burns... minor.
that's scary....sometimes i overheat my distilled water that comes from the fridge. But i don't get why putting something in the superheated water sets it off? Oh...cause theres suddenly an impurity?
This happened to me last weekend when I reheated coffee that was made with tap water, but the coffee maker had a water purification filter. It also happened to someone I work with when he made a cup of tea from water that came from a Brita water filtration pitcher. I suspect that the water from my refrigerator's water dispenser would do the same, since it is filtered.
@dreed20968 You do realise that the water is no longer "filtered" once you add coffee to it, right? Not to mention the fact that the types of filters you are talking about (Brita and a coffee maker) do not filter exceptionally well.
they forgot to mention some people have high grade water filtration systems in their kitchens like reverse osmosis filters that could get the water pure enough for this to happen more often then just a few times a year
The phenomena is called nucleation. It happens in when you suddenly introduce something for bubbles to form on, similar to what happens with the mentos in coke trick.
Had this happen very violently with black coffee. Always stir before heating to avoid the problem. Coffee instantly foamed and spouted about 6 inches above the rim of the cup when I dropped a spoon in.
with me it's different. when i used drinking water , microwaved it for 3 mins , 30 secs in a tall glass cup, and put 1 tablespoon of Sanka ( instant coffee), it made a more of an volcano eruption , instead of an "explosion". can anyone explain this?
Yup, had a cup of water superheat on me when I was a kid. New microwave - more powerful then the previous one but set the same time. Went to add sugar and the whole thing boiled out onto the bench. Glad it didn't splash me. After that I used the kettle

MeowsyDancer 9 months ago
i tried it after 5 mins it starts boiling then at 7 mins it explodes!

If any of this is true then there is a state of water that no scientist has desribed yet - clearly if you add sugar or salt to water which disolves instantly you have changed the boiling point and you should expect an explosion but adding heat to water at 100 C or 212F causes bubbles to form and boiling to occur UNLESS the water is UNDER PRESSURE.
ianfergusonian 10 months ago
wait, why doesn't pure water boil? as in, no bubbles? o.O
sharker93 10 months ago
@sharker93 There were lots of "bubbles" and they all happened at the same time, causing an eruption.

@sharker93 inpurities, as in vitamins bacteria etc the heat makes them burn or something :p and produces gasses and the gass is forced up :D

rowdon 9 months ago

Sorry about my English
NenadE46 1 year ago
It happened to me with tap water! Fortunately it happened when it was still in the mircowave so the only effect was that the door slammed open. I guess it's some kind of metastable phase like overcooled liquid water.
ambphysis 1 year ago

This happened to me, I was reheating my coffee! Luckily I wast holding the mug while I was stirring... I took the mug out the oven, laid it on the table, and as I as about to stirr, I grabbed the handle of the mug so that it would be stable.. and as soon as the spoon landed in the mug .. BOOM! it splattered everywhere! it rose up from the bottom.. like a fountain... my hands got little burns... minor.
saznrai 1 year ago
that's scary....sometimes i overheat my distilled water that comes from the fridge. But i don't get why putting something in the superheated water sets it off? Oh...cause theres suddenly an impurity?

DarkBlazer641 1 year ago
This happened to me last weekend when I reheated coffee that was made with tap water, but the coffee maker had a water purification filter. It also happened to someone I work with when he made a cup of tea from water that came from a Brita water filtration pitcher. I suspect that the water from my refrigerator's water dispenser would do the same, since it is filtered.
dreed20968 1 year ago
@dreed20968 You do realise that the water is no longer "filtered" once you add coffee to it, right? Not to mention the fact that the types of filters you are talking about (Brita and a coffee maker) do not filter exceptionally well.

The phenomena is called nucleation. It happens in when you suddenly introduce something for bubbles to form on, similar to what happens with the mentos in coke trick.
lunhil12 1 year ago
Had this happen very violently with black coffee. Always stir before heating to avoid the problem. Coffee instantly foamed and spouted about 6 inches above the rim of the cup when I dropped a spoon in.
lunhil12 1 year ago
@lunhil12
Luckily in the couple times it's happened to me I've put the sugar in first which doesn't react that violently, but violently enough.

with me it's different. when i used drinking water , microwaved it for 3 mins , 30 secs in a tall glass cup, and put 1 tablespoon of Sanka ( instant coffee), it made a more of an volcano eruption , instead of an "explosion". can anyone explain this?

if you are boiling water in the microwave place a small object in the water thats safe to be in the microwave that way it will always boil
