Nathanaelcard - I'm pretty sure this is from the 1989 performance of Aida by the Metropolitan Opera of NYC. I think the entire performance is available on DVD. We just saw Aida tonight at the Lyric Opera of Chicago. It was very exciting (no live animals though). We enjoyed it so much we may go again in March (they frequently have 2 separate runs of an opera in the same season - usually with different casts).

There's a song from an opera I can't quite remember, I think it's set in egypt or looks similar..anyway there's a scene where a beautiful woman sings a slow song whilst walking down stone steps and is singing in french then a guy comes out of nowhere and joins in dressed in only a cloth skirt looking thing and it becomes a gorgeous duet, the song is in french i'm 72% sure. I saw the video on youtube in 07 or 08 and I can't remember the opera name or the songs name or who sang it, help please:)

My parents took me to see Aida when I was about nine years old. As you can imagine, I was pretty unappreciative until the Triumphal March. It really made the whole evening worthwhile.

I recently attended a lecture by historian Manuel Quezon III (yes, grandson of our late president) telling that it was because most of our propagandists (Rizal, del Pilar et.al.) were able to study in Europe with the opening of the Suez Canal in Egypt. Historical context supposedly passing down.
