This cover is awesome. But it just reminds me of what I can never have. My Baby Boomer parents had an ugly divorce, my siblings were all younger than me and it destroyed them... they're all either still on drugs or dead. It's made me terrified to have children... and I'm a dude. I'll never be able to drink white in the sun with with family. But hopefully one day I'll be able to do so with people I actually care about.
im a Christian, but as an Australian I can really appreciate this song because it beautifully portrays our culture. Christmas day with the family, what could be better? :)
I noramlly HATE it when someone tries to cover one of tim's songs and have to click off the vid to the real version before I DIE!!... but this was good:) congrats:)xx
I think of my family when I hear this song, thats its true message that at the end of the day the most important thing is to be with the ones we love and that is the greatest gift we can get given at any christmas
I think of my family when I hear this song, thats its true message that at the end of the day the most important thing is to be with the ones we love and that is the greatest gift we can get given at any christmas
As a Christian, I naturally disagree with the atheist aspects of the song, it is other than that quite a nice song about Christmas. Tim Minchin's version was better, but Kate's is also lovely in its own way.
I love when a cover song is better than the original. I really love the way that Kate sings this rendition and don't love how Tim sings it although it is Tim's genius that created the song.
This song, more than any other Christmas carol speaks to me about what the Holiday is really about. We can dispense with the mythology and just have a day to get together and be surrounded by real love from the real people who care about us. That's a tradition worthy of passing on to our children.
Yep, but it's mostly a secular celebration of a holiday. A lot of Christians go to mass or other services to celebrate the religious aspect of the day, but for most Australians (Christian or otherwise) it's a day set aside to eat a big meal, have some drinks and trade gifts with the people we love.
@CTrace Also, twas written by a comedic singer ta' begin with. I don't believe he intended it to be one of the world's greatest ballads :) but it's pretty. (And funny...) :) But again, everyone's entitled to their own opinion.
@CTrace Musical opinions aside... As you know what they say about opinions. I think it's a beautiful song, as does everyone I know that has heard it, that including PROfessional musicians. But the point being someone having problem with the CONTENT of the song. Obviously you do not, so good for you. :)
If we were to compare the varying opinions regarding religion in any important way, it would be to measure the level of hate in each opinion. If no matter WHAT you believed, you did so without hate, the world would be a better place. Sigh. Religion seems to be the touchiest subject, with so much emotional attachment to every radical opinion.
In regards to this beautiful and thoughtful song, it narrows in on what Tim believes Christmas is truly about: family.
@BlueWaveOfLight You realize that "Palestinian" simply refers to the people native to the area we know as "Palestine", right? Including Muslims, Christians and Jews?
That is absolutely HILARIOUS that he managed to have that song included in a Christian charity CD. They obviously didn't listen to it before they agreed.
@Wallyrus I think they did... but yeah, its very surprisingly open minded. Maybe it's just an acknowledgment that Christmas doesn't have the same meaning for everyone?
Her voice is pretty, but there's a certain quality in Tim's original that just seems to be a bit missing here. It's hard to pin down what it is. His version just sounds more ... more... more like he's personally invested in the lyrics and he really *feels* them. Her version just seems a bit to "uppy" and happy-trippy where his was deeper and more heartfelt.
Great song, and I love Tim Minchin. But preferring Dawkins to Tutu, presumably because of their respective beliefs about religion, seems a little petty. Tutu is an awesome human being. If Tim was paying a little attention he'd realise that outside of abstract articles of faith, Tutu shares most of his values. The old man has even come out in spirited defense of gay sex. I've been an atheist and a skeptic for 23 years and there's hardly anything I disagree with Tutu on.
The Heraldsun today has the Christian Lobby complaining and Family Council saying this song is a 'sick joke' not in the 'spirit of Christmas.' The arrogance to act as if their particular sect owns the holiday and defines it's meaning for all Australians... that's messed up. For most of us, its about family, and that is the message of this beautiful song.
@mikeInside It's time for non-religious people to take back the word "family". If christianity is based on the bible then Christian organizations have no right to use it.
They get their "family values" from somewhere else.
First video I've seen of her. Very good singing voice and well done on this song, but I never like people covering comedy songs. It loses some of the charm that Tim brought to it, charm he brought because he wrote it.
It's not too bad here because it's a beautiful song and the least comedic of his. But still, mah 2c.
i usually watch youtube covers for the lolz... but this is just plain awesome...
