I noticed in the videos for the nano lagoon that the guy said not to use rodi water. After looking at your tank and the progression of it and how spectacular it is I wanted to know if you use rodi water
why didnt you follow the nano-lagoon recipe for the aragecrete rock? and also why didnt you do the whole phytoplankton to zooplankton to small grazer thing?
i really like all your reef videos,i used to have a ten gallon, like 4 years ago, lately this year i got that itch of coming back to the hobby, well i did,,got my self a 25 gallon cube tank, not yet running still buying my equipment....now i actually i have a question....DO I REALLY NEED A PROTIEN SKIMMER? and yes i do plan on keeping only soft corals...
i use play sand in all my tanks that have a sand bend, i even use it for a bottom layer under my pond rocks to help grow bacteria, trust me you'll have no problems
I came in on your vids on your latest day - and as I am going to start a lido 120L reef I am going to watch all your vids - so looking forward as they are very informative - keep up the good work - cheers.
actually i just made more and i found out i used way too little water! It looks like its already drying after 5min, so i think that should do the trick.. but still did you let it become all the way dry?
@lmposible chances are you're going to ruin the first batch or two figuring how to mix your ingredients right. I worked with cement for a few years so I knew what I was looking for and how to work the mixtures. there's lots of how to make rock movies on youtube now....check em out. you want a dry, well mixed, mixture.
@lmposible also your rock should be hard in 24 hours in normal conditions. more in damp basements, less outside with lots of air flow. once hard put in water.
I tryed to make Rock, and it took like 4 days to dry. How dry did u let it get? And, when I put the rock in the water for making a stable p.h. it feels like i could snap the whole rock in two pieces. Is this Bad. or just normal.?
I don't get it. You are setting up a 10g reef, so you need about 10lbs of live rock. If live rock costs you $5 a pound, why did you spend $55 on materials and months of work/waiting to make this stuff.
@Haijin72 I had enough materials to make 100lbs of live rock for the same price as buying 10. But since I only made 10 at the time of this movie the cost was the same, that's right. Fortunately I'm able to look at the big picture and understand that materials for DIY rock does not go bad. I can always use the left over in the future to make more rock for say frag plugs, or a new tank build. I've done both of those since I made this movie a year ago.
Sorry for not telling u strait up but im doin the 90 gal version, i have 100 lbs of the gray cement and i couldnt find it in white and also i couldnt find the oyster shell, i know they use it for chickens but knowone sells it local. I guess i wont do the couloring, ill find out soon how it turned out and ill tellu, Ps im getting a 75 gal full setup for free, so thats the reason for the rock
I have type 1 portland cement and its kinda gray, is that ok? I use exactly the recipe in ur 90 gal vid, and i forget the brand of polyblend but its a powder and i hav the same colours as you...thanks
hmm that might be the problem right there. The recipe for the 90 is totally different than the 10gal. The 10 gal is 1 part of each polyblend, 3-4 parts sand, and 1 part salt. You don't need cement with polyblend because there's already is cement in it. Also yes grey cement will severely alter the color because of the power of the grey color/cement.
I did ur recipe and it came out like shush, so when i made a new batch, i added polyblend and it didnt even change the color no matter how much i put in there, whats going on???
slush sounds like too much water. might was out the dye. change the color from what to what? I'm not sure because the two colors with aragonite (pretty much white) should come out purple. what kind of sand are you using? and what color polyblends?
they're still there. I hardly ever touch the stuff. Think I have some that's over 2 years old...probably gotta throw it out now dunno what the shelf life of the home made crap is. Maybe I'll cook with it some day..
There are a few things I do not understand. What do you mean by parts, when you describe the measurements of the ingredients for the rock? And also, what is the salt for in the mixture? Won't the salt just dissolve once the rock comes in contact with the water?
Parts could be any way you want to measure. I used a coffee cup. 1 full cup = 1 part. The salt is exactly for that...it makes the rock pourous and more of a filter..
Im looking for some one that can help me out with my ich problem!!!from wat i kno it started with a coral beauty that was infected but i detected it to late!!! so i moved it the quarentine tank 10gal all reading wer fine but it still died!!!! Now in tha display tank{30 gal ] i have moderate ammonia and even the salt wen up!!! my two clowns are getting white spots and even my green/blue chromis two[3 of them] it might be strees or ich!!! wat do u think and any advise would be appreciated!! thanks
To cure that ich move all the fish to a quarentine tank. Add ich medication (copper based) only to the QT tank (copper will kill corals & inverts). Do not run charcoal, it will kill the medication (powerhead or empty HOB filter). Do 5% clean water changes in the QT tank every day or two to keep the amonia levels down. Keep the fish in there with meds for at least a month. Ich takes about a month to clear on fish and to die out in the display. The sooner you get them medicated the better. GL
After curing this time I didn't dust them off with anything by my hand. Next time I will use a wire brush to make sure I get all the sand off, or I'll just cure them on salt.
In the tank now I use a turkey baster and it's working really well to bring the natural purple back out of the rocks.
I got a pamphlet about polyblend grouts from home depot cause i was gonna do tiling in my bathroom. And i saw, at the back of the pamphlet, that it says something about mixed with Moldgard to resist mold growth. I dont know if every polyblend is mixed with it, but did yours have moldgard?
You got me worried so I did some research. I double checked and everything on the ingredient list and MSDS is reef safe. It's getting covered in diatoms, and the purple is starting to come out really nice. Maybe Moldguard is a gimmick?
reefcentral has the post that gave me the idea. There's a pic of a guys polyblend rock using grout with Moldguard. His seems fine, and so far mine seems fine. Some reason youtube wont let me post the exact link, so just google "Polyblend rock reefcentral" it's posted by someone named "sunkool"
Thanks. I made a few pounds of rocks. Made it with crushed corals though cause for some reason the lfs around doesnt have aragonite sand. It looks good but yours looks a lot better.
I got them from a Canadian retailer (only ships to Canada) from guelf Ontario. I got an Acan, Clove, Zoa, Mushroom, Stylopora, chalice, favia, and a Monti coming. I've been researching them a lot so I know I'll have to get a bigger tank soon, but I can also put some in the sump if one gets to big/mean.
Bravo! Great vid -- thanks for the info on the rock mix. Can't tell the difference between your rocks and the natural rocks! That's real progress. The tank looks cool even without any marine life. Looking forward to your HD experience. We tried a DXG-569V but have not mastered it yet, to say the least.
cool. your rock looks exactly as the actual live rock. i couldnt even tell until you showed it. great job. btw are you going to add any fish? im starting the same nano lagoon based on ipsfdotcom. cant wait to see the future HD vids =D
I never did weigh them...I'm starting to think I have too much rock. There's an esimate of maybe 30 lbs total in the display & sump. But I will be upgrading to a bigger tank when I have the money for the lights / tank / skimmer. So I'd rather have more just for now becoming live.
All that rock was about half of the polyblend. These DIY rocks are very light because of the gaps on the inside from the salt disolving. Water actually pours right through them, which is great for filtering.
Is your nano skimmer manufacturer "Rio"? I was looking into that skimmer but may go with something else when I finally add a sump/refuge. What are you using for testing calcium? No the skimmer is a cheap thing from ebay. (seller bbecoco.622) Cost like $20 and I'm not convinced how well it will work. ok I've had my little skimmer going for a few days now, and I must say, it's AMAZING! This little thing pulls all kinds of crap out of the water. The water is a lot clearer now. Not bad for $20. Think it's made by Boyu.
CraigTube has great wine making video's. It's a real art, and I enjoy it as it should be imo, an art.
I must caution though. having any alcohol (epecially large quantities from kits) requires care and responsibility. I give most of my home made away to people that enjoy it responsibly.
Cheater! Lol, that is pretty clever. Don;t have to wait as long for the pretty purples.
