You only get crowns when you don't take care of the cavity, you end up having to get a root canal, which basically means the dentist drills the root of the tooth destroys the enamel down to a cap, which is impressed and given to the lab, mean while you are left with a temporary excuse for teeth

when you do a crown on a decayed tooth, do you fill the cavity first and then place the crown on top of the filled cavity? or do you just ignore the cavity and just place the crown? also, i have had 12 cavities filled (some were very bad cavities) and have had no crowns. this was 12 years ago and my teeth are perfectly fine. SO why the need for crowns? an upsell??

I'm a student applying to dental school this summer and I had a quick question about taking crown impressions. When I observed a dentist carry out this procedure, he used a piece of string that was between the tooth and the soft tissue which created a line that was visible on the impression. He said this line is what helps the lab create an accurate crown. Would you happen to know what the term used for this line is?

That's a gingival retraction cord. It's mainly used on crown and bridge unless gingiva needs to be retracted for a restorative procedurre. Dental assistant using GINGIVAL RETRACTION CORD INSTRUMENT -to place gingival retraction cord in sulcus area after tooth is prepared for a crown and before final impressions are taken. All dentists have they're own ways to do all the procedures. Dentists are choose more effecient way to perform.

@43405555 mines gonna cost around 700 for a right front tooth its porcelain so it will look just like your teeth they take a color of your teeth and make it that.. so make sure to have white teeth while getting it

you know if, it depends on how bad it is? the front crack is half the crack horizontally-sideways, its just 1 1/2 a crack. but if you feel the back of the tooth, you can already feel the gums.. will it cost more?

@43405555 from what i understand aslong as you have any tooth left they will carve it down and make a crown to fit onto the nub of the tooth with cement glue. Mine is cracked straight across about as the half and he said that is really good for a crown as it allows alot of tooth left. Although I think it costs more for diferent teeth front teeth costing the least.

If he puts i mean lots of anisthisa it wont that much. And good thing i had mine early no infection. I had my root kanal cleaned from decay filled and doctor said im young it heals by it self. My next appoint ment is on the may 4th. If there is nothing more to do.. Lucky me i just need a crown. So srsly just get to a dentist before it starts to hurt!

@hoth260 The actual crown (not the temp they put in the day they take impressions) needs to be created at a lab. It is usually a porcelain tooth with a metal jacketing for strength. it is also color matched to your other teeth. That takes up to two weeks to make

i have to my 2 front teeth... should last as long as u... just take care of it... the porcelain is strong put it this way how longs has ur toilet lasted? .. not to mention it has steel between ur the tooth and crown so its durably... and i dont think it would chip the glue is really the only problem if the seal breaks then go to the dentist and they will glue it back in.. u can buy temporary glue at walgreens

they can fix ur chipped tooth without a crown.. i was playing basball with my buddy like 10 years ago and he bent down to pick up a ball with the bat in his hands and the bat hit his tooth and chipped then just used moldings to recreate what was there and glued it on and that shit is still there ..

well if your temporary crown is ccoming off you should go to your destist because your teeth might move and if your having a porcelain crown later on it won't fit. get help i would recommend that. and good luck!

I just had one today wasn't too bad. The hardest thing is keeping your mouth open for an hour and a half. You don't feel anything I recpomend you bring an ipod ,that helped me.

I just got prepped for a crown and have to wear this temp for a couple weeks, but my teeth are SO sensitive to hot, cold, sweet and salty stuff.  My teeth just simply hurt so bad. Will this terrible sensitivity go away after i get my crowns? I'm so scared i'll be in pain the rest of my life because of this ;(

the dr. wil never let you suffer through pain..worst comes to worst, they will do a root canal. simply remove the the vital pulp tissue nd replace it with filling material.

Thanks so much for the response. I just finally got my crowns on a few days ago. The reason the temps made my teeth so sensitive is cuz he didn't cover my real teeth very well. THere were open areas where salts & sweets, etc. were hitting them easily. The crowns are wonderful, but just a bit sensitive to cold drinks...thats about it. Thx for reply ;)

I agree that the tooth becomes brittle, however you may not need a crown on your tooth immediately after the root canal, specifically if it's a front tooth.  Eventually the tooth will discolour or might break but this can take several years.

excellent explanation! If a permanent crown is placed on tooth # 14, what recommendations would you give the patient to floss around the area? especially if they fear loosing the crown due to improper floss? Is there potential for incipient cavities to form under the crown in the piece of tooth which remains(is this even possible)? Can a crown also cause cavities to surrounding teeth in this case # 13 & 15? THANK YOU!

Floss as you would a normal tooth. Only way incipient caries would occur is through an opening between the tooth margin and crown or due to a hole in the crown. In terms of adjacent teeth being prone to more caries due to the presence of a crown is not valid.

I had my root canal treatment in mid Aug n now in the process of doing the crowning. Not to worry. the root canal process is painless cos you'll be given aneasthetic. You only feel uncomfortable and a slight pain during the clamping and x-ray. Still not to worry. Find a good dentist.

Yes they can, especially if you chew gum or eat sticky candy. See your dentist twice a year, to make sure your crown is on tight.

I just had a 2nd crown put in (both due to fractured molars) and they look better than before. The process was much easier than I expected and I've had absolutely no problems eating. The temporary crown is sensitive and you should avoid chewing on it plus you need at least two visits (one to have the tooth shaped, the second to have the perm crown fitted).
