@Leatherbubba - The Japanese are well known for pulling in foreign culture references. Most of the time, it's music related, but look at Splatterhouse, where Rick looked an awful lot like Jason Voorhees of Friday the 13th in the original game. Yeah, they kind of do that.
Wow... I too had nightmares about this game. Not because it was so scary but just long crazy insane feeling nightmares about being lost in this mansion. That and metroid.
I could never figure this game out when I was a kid, I was only 5 or 6. But I have fond memories of the music and of the monster scaring the shit out of me when it would pop out from behind one of the doors.
Since you mention the box art, take a look at the intestine cat stabbing Mike in the foot. Priceless. XD This game seems to combine Faxanadu style sidescrolling action with elements of Shadowgate. I wonder if The Last Half of Darkness (ye olde DOS version) was partially inspired by Dr. Chaos. I see elements of the movie House in there too (the American movie, not the Japanese ultrademento flick).
@Eldeecue Seriously, I never realized as a kid that all you had to do was stab it. This boss scared the crap out of me as a kid. Slowly advancing, getting bigger and bigger...
Damn straight. It's ridiculous. What are they expecting of gaming companies, babysitting? Geez. It's not anyone else's responsibility, for crying out loud, it's the parents'. Why can't they figure that out? Has the modern parent just stopped trying? Oy.
@SergeantLuke yeah but think of all the creativity we have lost to the rating system, something can't be too much of one thing so everything gets limited.
@2HornDogs The M rating is an extremely generous rating. Silent Hill 2, for example, features severed limbs, copious amounts of blood, intentionally over-sexualized enemies, and an infamous scene where a man in a pyramid-shaped helmet rapes a group of mannequins. All that, and it got an M.
You'd have to be REALLY nasty to get an AO, and really, who would want to play a game that goes that far?
@Raephire - The thing is, the ratings board was supposed to be there FOR the parents so they could have a heads-up what their kids are playing. The problem isn't the board, it's the idiots that don't read the rating, buy GTA IV for their kid, and wonder why he thinks picking up hookers in a stolen car, getting it on in an alley, then killing them for their spent money is okay...
Forgive a possibly strange comment, but, I rather like the sound of your voice, sir. It seriously keeps saying to me "Voice on the radio. Voice on the radio!" Maybe not so much a DJ but like, those late-night things where they do informative tidbits, or the like, between songs. Something like that. Anyway. I'm intrigued so far - and never seen very far into this game. I'll have to continue watching!
Even though you're being wry at the start of the video, your voice is uncannily good at reading 80s copy. Anyway, this game used to scare the Christ out of me & my brother. Especially when you open a door and The Omen starts hopping around.
wow man, i got this for my birthday when it came out! i picked it because of the box art. i remember i got to a later boss and it just wouldn't die, i tried killing it for about 20 minutes and then gave up. lol
I played this game when I was young because I thought it was going to be cool. How could you go wrong with a name like Dr. Chaos? I didn't know how to switch the commands, and since I came out of playing Mario and stuff, I thought it would be a single button. I didn't know you had to combo it. If you turn around five times in a searchable room, a monster comes out, and I got the Frankenstein...
I'd kill for that free WCW shirt

I loved this game as a kid. Best Intro screen ever. Looking back and seeing the From Beyond similarities is pretty amusing.

Hit walls to open passages and reveal items and save ammo for those monsters that put out and for bosses. use knife on bats and rats to save ammo.

Back when this game came out, the ESRB didnt exist, and to this day should not, In fact I ignore the ratings board.
Parents are responsible for the content they introduce to their kids.

@Raephire But it's much easier for parents to tell what games are inappropriate if there's a highly visible "M" or "T" on the box.
