  • dammn man, right on! wonderful rendition

  • Very good !

  • yes .. this will be repeated a lot of times today. great tune and great cover. really beautiful.

  • good playing, and video really helpful for me to learn how to play it too, so double thanks!

  • That is scary... and amazing. I have several live recordings from Spaceland and other various venues from the period of time when Elliott Smith was developing these songs, and his live versions could never approach the perfection that you have captured here.

  • if you play in standard tuning the capo matches up with the record on the fourth, but elliott downtuned a lot usually a step down.

  • nice job nice guitar nice cover

  • i smell talent :)

  • pure awesomeness

  • This is amazing. You're really talented!

  • i am huge elliott smith fan and this is the best elliott smith cover on youtube amazing.

  • Great job man. That looks hard as hell to play. Btw, what kind of acoustic is that? Props!

  • Bravo! This is fucking brilliant! Sorry for the language but it is! Peace brother x

  • played on the sixth tuned down a whole step.

  • played on the sixth tuned down a step.

  • Floored! Some of you guys just blow my mind. VERY nice cover man

  • the more i hear you playing it, the more i love it.

  • Brilliance! :) Does anyone know if it was indeed played with a capo on the 5th fret... on the album that is...

  • @punkassnoodles I'll check that later, but I think it's CAPO on the 7th fret.

  • you definitely did this song justice.

    great job

  • Good job I really enjoyed that. Looks hard to play.

  • Dude, I love your voice. You're the new Elliott Smith!

  • sickness!

  • Omfg!  Nice job!! I'm impress ♥♥♥

  • Capo on the 5th?

  • @Gettinghitonattheban that's right! Bye, fad

  • @fademer i believe its on the 4th. thats how he plays it live, and it matches up to the album. either way, i cant play this shit. lol

  • Really, really wonderful! Thank you for much for sharing this with us.

    This will probably help out a bit with my own picking. :)

  • wow

  • I HAVE to learn this!

  • @AlexMoirMusic It's the same pickup as Elliott's, a Bill Lawrence A-300.

  • @fademer you sure about that pickup? from the only gear list i could find it said : "fishman rare earth soundhole pickup"

  • @obz1983 Yes I'm pretty sure, I think he used a Gibson guitar with the Fishman pickup at the end, but most of the time (from early on) it was his Yamaha with the Bill Lawrence.

  • @fademer cool i might just get one myself (-: i was just learning to play this tune too, it's quite fun to play! condor av. also has some very nice guitar work...

  • awesome playing!

    by the way, what kind of guitar is that? I love the colour

  • @DoJoCasiNo It's a Martin 00015, you can't really see the structure of the wood, but it's all mahogany. It's one of the cheaper Martins, but I like it a lot.

  • I think you did a wonderful job.

  • fantastic! great job!

  • So, I just got angeles down and I'm wondering if I should try and tackle this beast haha. I'm not sure how much more difficult this song is.

  • @evancasto It's definitely a bit more adventurous than Angeles, the picking pattern is less repetitive, but it is doable. If I may give some advice: start playing it slowly. Good luck! Fad

  • beaut

  • well done.

  • is there anyway you could send me the tab for this through an email XD i know thats alot to ask, but this is my favorite song and i would love to learn how to play it, and your version is flawless haha

  • hi, i don't have tabs, it's all by ear, but i hope the video can help you to learn it, that's why i posted these video's here in the first place. Bye, Fad

  • @fademer it has helped alot actually. it's coming along slowly but surely haha

  • @81107yoshi Great!

  • Oh my. Thank you for not butchering this song.

    you're very well at playing and singing. : ]

  • what is the picking pattern, i cant tell...

    awesome job by the way! very impressive

  • @xcatieex070 Youtube doesn't let me include a little tab here, grrr :-/ It's a basic travis picking pattern, alternating basses with a melody on top of it. Good practice!

  • Check the bradpriddy site on travis picking (Youtube doesn't let me include an URL here either!!)

  • is that standard tuning? I don't trust tabs etc

  • @Munchkinonhelium sure it is! Good luck, fad

  • THAT was pretty much flawless! I'm dazzled and utterly impressed. I will now devote a ridiculous amount of my time to learn this song stictly because I can see mortals can indeed play it.

  • First time posted on youtube and contrary to all the anger/over-the-top comments on here in general - beautifully sung, well done. Sound like him, but even if not totally (whats the point in a copycat), have the same fragility (yet dare I say, better quality) to your voice, lovely...

  • Comment removed

  • First time ever commented on youtube...

    Excellent, you have a real talent. Lots of comments on youtube are really negative or really over-the-top either way, but got to say you're voice is great on this song, sound a lot like him/make it your own, v good...

  • My favorite songwriter played on my favorite guitar. May I ask what pickup you are using?

  • of course, it's Bill Lawrence A-300, cheap and really great sound, I love it (plugged in a Fender Deluxe amp)

  • Hows the battery life? I cant seem to find any reviews on it. I dont know if I should spring for a pricier pickup like the m1 or the rare earth, or if this one is a overlooked gem that I should give a shot.

  • There is no battery, it's passive pickup, which i plug in an electric guitar amp (Fender Deluxe). I have the LR Baggs M1 as well (the passive version), but after extensive testing at home and on stage, I really prefer the A-300! It's a matter of taste, the M1 might give you a more acoustic-like sound, it depends on what you play, and with/without plectrum.

  • Thanks so much. I have to try the A300 then. I have a super reverb that i was thinking about using with the acoustic. You think that might be a trainwreck? Whats your experience with feedback from the deluxe?

  • feedback?! There's no feedback with this combo ;-) With a nice reverb you'll go far, but make sure you have a good (pre)amp, don't go straight into the PA, to get a warm and colorful sound!

  • Absolutely great!!! Thanks for the video.

  • Fademer, this is an awesome cover. Great job! And, btw, is the guitar you're using a Martin?

  • yes, it's a 000-15 ;-)

  • Fantastic.

    Love this song, love your song...

  • Masterpiece!! Did you use tabs to learn it? If so, could you please tell us where to find them? Thank you man! Great playing!

  • Hi, no, I didn't use any tabs, I almost never do, it's all by ear. In my opinion, tabs are very practical to remember exact fingerings, but it's a bit like a GPS: you are no longer aware of the road you take ;-) Good luck!

  • You're very, very good at enunciating close to how Elliott did.

  • the intro rocks

  • Nice job dude ! Regards From France !

  • Splendid!

  • this is perfect<3

    maybe you should show your

    face mister!

    :]

    you're so amazing.

  • whats that thing in the middle of the sound hole guys?

  • Its a pickup for acoustic guitars. You can put them on any acoustic guitar with an open hole and then you have an acoustic-electric.

  • marry me?

  • excellent

  • this is freakin incredible

  • is that capo on the third and did you use a tab for this

  • @marr9jarman Im pretty sure the capo is on the 5th fret. but im not him so im not sure if he used a tab or not! lol :]

  • standard tuning, 5th fret

  • @allofyou It's 5th fret indeed, but my guitar is tuned one step down. As you can read above, no I didn't use a tab. I hope the video is clear enough to help you if you want to learn this song. Bye!

  • amazing cover!!! great rhythm....i wish i could play.....

  • excellent

  • whats the model of your martin?

  • it's a 000-15

  • very noice! :)

  • Excellent crotch shot. Oh..song was good too.

  • stunning!

  • well played -- is that the same pick-up that elliott used?

  • yup! Bill Lawrence A-300, cheap, nice sound and good looking ;-)

  • The best cover of Memory Lane I've seen, so far. Great job, mang.

    ~~~~Ughh, ughh, never high.
  • truly amazing, best cover of this song...and i am also in love with a 000-15 Martin, oh so much... cheers from France
  • OH OH OH! GET IT BABY!!!! [<-not sexual] lol good job on the guitar part, it's EXACT! =P Nice voice too!
  • Dude...my bro'll kill me for using his account to say this but you really made that song your oan, while keeping it Elliott Smiths haha.
    Nice going bud :)
  • I'm weary of most covers, especially one of Elliott Smith but this is really good!
  • the pick-up looks very similar to what elliott used
  • mate, this is amazing. is that a martin guitar? what's the pickup there?
    again, fantastic cover, i keep coming back to it haha.
  • yes it's a martin 000-15 with a Bill Lawrence A-300 pickup. Thanks!
  • Could of told me this was an Elliot Smith recording and I wouldn't have doubted it....well done.
  • I love it . :)
  • Probably the best cover I've ever seen. Amazing job!
  • r u singing tht? You sound so much like him :P
  • you come closer to playing like elliott than anyone else I've heard. Awsome. Elliott's looking down smiling on you
  • Props.
  • This is marvelous ! I wish I could play like you ...
  • perfect haha now i know how to play this
  • amazing!
  • awesome man.
  • fantastic mate! you did it brilliantly.
  • Beautiful song, beautiful guitar, beautiful cover :)
  • very nice
  • this is a really good cover, bravo!!
    how much does a acoustic as good as that cost? about a grand?
  • Amazing.
  • nice that was perfect
  • wow good job man. that was amazing
  • AMAZING!!!
  • beautiful man. when you own a martin like that you have to have the skills to justify having it. and damn you have the skills. luky for you because if not i would have to take it off your hands =p
  • hugh?
  • stunning.
  • This is a Masterpiece! You made me dream! Thanks,really! Huge talent,great voice! :)
  • AWESOME cover !
    This song is beautiful and you covered it really really well. Thanks again for sharing it !
  • this was awesome. your guitar sounds beautiful
  • The french guy fab94, the asian kid with the glasses that does all those tutorials, you...... you guys are great. Thanks for posting these videos on youtube. It's WAY better than trying to read tabs for Elliott Smith songs. This piece though; it's really something special. The more I listen the more I'm......speechless. Thank you so much.
  • dude u rock
  • key is one half step down from original. but yes very good job esp with vocals.
  • wow... vraiment bien :) ta voix recemble vraiement a s'y méprendre a celle d'elliott, et la guitare!! Bravo :) tu m'as confondue lol j'aurais juré que c'était le vrai elliott
  • Ya know, I usually look at these covers on youtube, and think, what an idiot. But you are obviously a very talented man, and have a great ear. Everything on this clip is almost as close to perfect as possible. Keep it up bro.
  • great
  • your voice is great. surprising sounds very much like elliott smith i think :D
  • That's a really hard song to cover, and you did it amazingly well.
  • Yea I agree with the consensus. This is the best vocal and guitar cover for an Elliott song on YouTube. Your accent does shine through a bit though... haha. Are you German? :)
  • I am from Belgium and speak dutch ;-) Thanks for all the nice comments below, new vid's coming up soon!
  • niiice work ~~~~
    elliott is my favourite artist and this is the first (and probably only) cover i've ever commented.
    congratulations on your work
  • Wow you should have a million views this is honestly the best elliott smith cover ive ever heard...excellent job
  • euh... thanks for that!
  • this is a really fucking good cover. bravo
  • Wow! Beautiful. Gotta love Elliott Smith - one of the Greatest we had.
  • are those John Pearse strings?
  • I don't remember, it might be... How do you know?
  • wild guess ;-) ...
    Can you hook up the A-300 pickup directly to your computer to record if you don't have any special type of sound card? Or would the sound be too weak, or no sound at all?
  • You really need some preamp, like a sound card or a real amp, otherwise you get a tiny little sound. A virtual amp might work, I've never tried.
  • oh cool thanks. what kind of preamp do u use? would the line-in on my sound card act as a pre-amp?
  • Yes, but depending on the sound card you get a nice preamplified signal or just a tiny little one ;-) I invested in a MOTU 828mkii, it's fantastic. But for recording with the A-300, I usually put a mic in front of my acoustic/electric amp and plug it into the MOTU.
  • could you recommend a decent tab for this? Can't find anything :(
  • I have never looked for tabs, sorry. But you can see everything in the vid', don't mind to ask if some parts might be unclear. Good luck, F
  • What is the chord at :27?
    This sounds really good, by the way!
  • its played x-10-11-10-11-x ... i think thats a g#min diminished
  • hi, thanks for the comment. I would call that chord a Gm7b5, meaning G minor 7 with a diminished fifth. Bye, F
  • Absolutely Gorgeous.
    This is a song I need to force myself to learn to better playing.
    Not a bad voice either!
  • great cover!!! doood, what pick-up is that? it reminds me of what elliott used to use in his yamaha. i am trying to get a brand/model number of the pick-up or something similiar! hit me back!
  • you've noticed it well, that pickup is exactly the one Elliott used to use. It 's a Bill Lawrence A-300, you'll find many cheap ones available on the net. Bye, F
  • Thanks!!!!
  • just curious, how do you like the pick up overall? feedback wise how is it? have you done any recording with it? if so, how does it record?
  • I like it a lot, it generally gives a warmer sound than a piezo. It has a big dynamic range, so you have to control your attack, that's why I don't recommend it for strumming with a pick. For fingerstyle it is great with/without thumbpick.
    For recording, I've tried to insert it immediately in a tube preamp or to put mic's in front of my Fender amp, but none of them is satisfying me yet. I have to spend more time on it.
  • thanks for the review! i kind of play a split of finger/strumming, but i went and bought it anyway :).
  • hi, my name is quentin, i'm frensh.
    I like very much this song, and your interpretation are very good!!!
    I would to say what time had you work for succeed to play exactly this song?
    And the difficulty?
    Thanks
    Quentin
  • well done - i play the martin d-15 which is y i clicked on the vid.. lol but i havnt been able to find anyone else who really plays this song as well so nicee
  • hey thanks for that! Btw, this Martin's a 00015. Cheers
  • i love belgian waffles.
  • LOL :-D
  • GREAT! Is that an Alvarez folk guitar?
  • thanks for your comment! It is actually a Martin 00015, one of the cheaper Martin models. I'm very happy with it.
  • very nice...
  • wow heaps good man! do you have any tab for this?
  • wooooow. class man, just class!
    great singing, clean guitar playing.
    heavenly how you just didn't reach the 'open' during the bridge. the perfect flaw for the perfect cover. greetings from belgium.
  • man, elliott smith isn't dead.. hes right here in this video.
  • brilliant!!! very clean
  • Absolute sterling job!
  • Sweet!
  • is that the same type of pickup as elliott's? and where did you get it?
  • yes, that's a Bill Lawrence A300. I am very happy with it, it was a cheap buy on eBay. Cheers! F
  • wow.
    now thats fucking class!
    x
  • niiiice, I have the same guitar man. Long live the Martin D-15. You didn't happen to get it through the Snapple yard sale did you?
