I dunno about it being a religion, as in any religion I ever heard of, there is always an object of worship. As far as I know, the Jedi don't worship the force, they just take from it an understanding of the world around them. And when you look at like that, it really doesn't seem that crazy. There are, of course, some dudes that take it too far, but the same can be said for any religion, really.

And Cenk, the principles sound good coss george Lucas based a lot of the Jedis's principles from Christianity, Buddism, and Samuri warriorship.
Jedi philosophy is actually stolen from Stoic philosophy in ancient Greece and then Lucus added the Jedi powers to it.

The English registering themselves as Jedi was in part a protest at the lame national census we were asked to take part in and in part a joke. A national publication said that if you can get 15 000 people to subscribe to your religion, that it must be a recognised religion. But it got out of hand and way more people joined. :D
In the end if was simply a way for atheists to say they're atheist without specifically saying so.

Here in Australia, a few years ago when it was census year, something like 20,000 people wrote in Jedi for a qeustion asking what religion you are apart of, so it got listed as a legal official church. And Cenk, the principles sound good coss george Lucas based a lot of the Jedis's principles from Christianity, Buddism, and Samuri warriorship.
