  • I would think that when the guitar vibrates when playing the b string it means that the string is losing a lot of energy to the body, meaning it would not keep vibrating long, meaning less sustain...

  • steve vai eat you heart out this guys a tremelo master!

  • Great video! Supertramp is one of my favorite bands! Carl is a great guitarist!

  • Awesome guitar and playing :)

  • I am in love with the Strat!

  • more like carl perhezesadsfsdf

  • 2:01 "it really is a great sounding instrument"

well you sure make it sound good ,man

  • What year is the guitar?

  • Dang, why have I not heard of this dude until now? Bad cat...

  • carl verheyen does not play guitar. he owns the living crap out of it.

  • Comment removed

  • Dude! =D

  • And Carl doesn't have a signature Stratocaster because... ??? Come ON Fender... get on it!

  • @jacknarcotta He has an endorsment with LSL guitars. Still, imo he should have 2 signature models with Fender. The three tone '58 sunburst and his seafoam green 60's strat.

  • i herd that Stratocaster are worth $28,000

  • you can float the bridge but you lose resonance of the guitar

  • can't you be just a LITTLE bit more carefull with those body??? It looks grosser than my kitchen table...

  • but Carl..fender's first time is a telecaster..

  • Any one got a link to CARL'S youtube channel, if he has one that is

  • That does it for me, GOT IT RIGHT THE FIRST TIME, wish all the other guitar manufactures would follow suite.

  • But if the pivot points of the trem block do not allow for any twisting during its travel, limiting it to an exact arc, then having the springs offset in length makes no difference.

  • The dude on the left is not quite accurate. Tremelo is a volume modulation whereas Vibrato is a pitch modulation. So the guitar whammy bar is a vibrato tool not a tremelo tool. Leo had it right on the amp. Fender amp vibrato is a pitch modulation not a volume modulation. But Leo was calling the whammy bar a temelo arm when it is truly a vibrato effect.

  • @O0Salmon0O - He is accurate. Fender amps have never featured vibrato. Regardless of the amp's name, i.e. Vibrolux, what it offers is in reality a tremolo circuit much like the Tremolux. No pitch modulation.

If you want real electronic Vibrato, you'll only find it in vintage Magnatone amps, no others.

  • sweet pulling

  • Anyone buying a guitar should always pick the best wood and the the transfer of string to wood. If you don't think this is important you are a fool. But please keep buying the junk and leave the good stuff for the rest of us.

  • wow! that's great!

  • Again, string tension MUST match SPRING tension at a given tuning. Spring tension can't 'nearly match' string tension. Why do otherwise great players have to come up with bizarre theories that defy secondary-school level physics? Jesus...

  • This is utter mythology. It betrays a complete ignorance of how a guitar pickup actually works. Resonance is important in acoustic guitars, but not electric guitars. Every single double-blind study done on the effect of wood on tone in electric guitars yields no discernible difference WHEN plugged in. Stick to the music Carl...

  • @Uberloinvongenchler My ears tell quite a difference in woods and wood density!

  • @Uberloinvongenchler So what your saying is that there is no differnce between an alder body and a mahogany body - which is patently not the case - the wood matters. The pickups transmit the resonace/vibration of the strings in combination with the wood to the amp.

  • This is bollocks! All the guitars would need new strings. Even a "lively" guitar will be dull with even moderately used strings.

  • "Got it right the first time" - indeed!

  • Wow! Nice chops... Very impressive!

  • Nice video and thank you for forwarding me Godbyone's video also. :) Have a nice day xoxo b.e.g.

  • the acoustic properties of a guitar are irrelevant, in my opinion.

  • @xPsuedo But they do affect the sound of the guitar when plugged in, so he was just saying it gives a good indication of a *lively* sounding guitar. It also affects sustain etc

  • Wow! Sounds GREAT!!!

  • setting up a stratocaster tremolo to float (as intended) properly and not go out of tune is a pain in the ass. but when you do get it right its awesome and tuning issues are not a problem. i find the 2 point trems on the american standards to be easier to set up to float. i actually hate it when the trem is right on the deck, its to stiff feeling when you use the tremolo bar and it sound not as good as a floater.

  • Wow that guy can PLAY damn

  • Good stiff man thx

  • 57 strat with the 3 colors sunburst of an 58.. you never know with Fender.

  • Why the B string?

  • check out those hairy fingers!

  • 4:17

  • Not to mention; if you set the bridge to float, you keep a Strat in better tune as the strings age. Set flat, strings will tend to bind in the nut, leaving some strings sharp. When they do this set to float, just snatch the bar back and back to pitch you are!

  • lol neck pickup has a really rocky bluesy tone *shreds some crazy fuckin lick*

oh that? whatever no big deal.

    the NEXT pickup...

  • I would be very happy to play as well as Carl, "sloppy" or otherwise.

  • he is an expert on the knowledge of the strat!! but he is not a good player!! he is basic and sloppy!!

  • @vinnothelizard what??? are u nuts?? he have very unique style.. in my opinion he is the man that can compared with guthrie.. it just not his day..

  • @vinnothelizard yer dumb

  • i search for that resonation, too, but i wonder why it should the b-string, i guess it's just the size of the body of your guitar which by accident resonates at the frequency of the b string- don't know if that is a quality sign

  • I hated strats because of their popularity until I bought one. Now they're my favourite guitars and I understand why they are so popular: the best balanced, comfortably and nice sounding instruments ever.

  • @MetalMatheos Same here. I though I could get everything from my squier 51.

No way...not like with a strat!

    Dm

  • I like the sunburst cause they seem natural, without all the extra paint stuff, it's just rawer!

  • i love your strat, all battered and played in, gorgeous.

  • 3:15 "I know exactly where I'm goin' when I PULL ON IT..." Oh yeah? lmao

  • We like this video very much!

  • What a beautiful guitar

  • Carl Verheyen is a true legend

  • 2:14 holy crap there is another person in the room!

  • @zerogirfan haha i was like where the fuck did you come from??

  • If you want to feel considerable vibration on the lower bout on a strat you should feel one finished in nitro cellulose lacquer just the like the vintage ones are. It allows the wood to breathe more and so it resonates more thus having better sustain. However my 2001 G&L legacy seems to be an exception to the rule.

  • @fbender722 i have a jay turser i picked up for $80 used at my local guitar shop, and the lower bout vibrates like a fucking earthquake

  • Pisses me off cause my B string doesn't move the wood at all

  • @Nauticus89 may i ask what guitar you have?

  • There's no reason an old guitar has to look beat up and worn if i't well taken care of.

  • even that guitar is old it still sound nice compare to squier strat

  • @lleonidas004 every ender sounds better than a squier... i love mine though. all i got

  • @megajames3000

Try a classic vibe! ;) Not all squiers are alike!

  • @ikke998 I might, but i dont really care for squires anymore. i know i wont buy one again. unless im trying a project one

  • @megajames3000 do you know what a JV squier is?

    check out JVStratocasters on youtube.

they are about 800 bucks though. (more for a really good one)

  • @MiniDaab no i never heard of it.

  • @megajames3000 It was a line of strats made in Japan. They were only made from 1982 - 1984 so they're very limited edition. They were made so fantastically and they rival almost any American model made today. They continue to appreciate today and they're not very cheap

  • @megajames3000 I second the Classic Vibe. I have the 50s Strat and its amazing! Nice pickups, vintage tuners, nice finish, and well put together, and it sounds fantastic!

  • @megajames3000 but remember that every Squier IS a Fender.....and made by Fender and backed by Fender....even though some of them really suck....

  • @stevoe1000 yeah mine sucks. im gettinga a mexi strat this week. it's a great starter guitar i give it that but 3 years and actually going places with it, i cant hold up

  • how do you get your guitar to be all worn and rusty and yellow i want mine to be like that lol

  • "I know exactly where I'm going when I pull on it" Don't we all Carl, don't we all?

  • @PopExpo. It's for the same reason a bell is made of metal and not something like plastic. Metal is special because it resonates long after it is struck and reacts quickly and according to how it's struck. The more dense and pure the metal is the better it sounds and the longer it can resonate. Cold rolled steel is pure and dense. It helps your strat because your strings vibrate one end to the other. Since your strings are seated in

in the block the block will resonate with the strings. A

  • Just wondering what amp your going thru makin those great sounds....?

  • i don't know how a piece of metal can do that but it does.

  • long live the stratocaster! i set my bridge to float also. i like using 50s style vibrato bends and surf style guitar so i gotta have that trem set up nice. I also use a callaham tremolo block in my american standard and yeah it totally makes a difference. Its made from cold rolled steel and has shallow string recesses just like the block on his (carl) guitar. this allows the string to go through the entire block. i've noticed better sustain and attack. the guitar is also acoustically louder.

  • The Fender Stratocaster is to me the sweetest sounding electric guitar. The Les Paul has that beautiful smooth sustained singing tone for sure, but i love the bite and clarity of the Stratocaster - that crystal like tone. Its the guitar for me anyway.

  • @JohnJamesMaloney Cheers on that mate! I am with you

  • lol mojo

  • really good bluesman but doesn't really know what he's talking about when it comes to guitar quality! a proper setup can make a cheap guitar vibrate nicely, a bad setup can make a great guitar sound horrible.

  • @mariosyjp

haha, he doesn't really know what he's talking about. sure, a virtuoso doesn't know what he's talking about. a cheap guitar can never vibrate as nicely as a decent guitar, because a cheap guitar is made of a mixture of woods that don't resonate as well.

  • @LfunkeyA of course a good guitar vibrates better than a cheap guitar. but a good guitar may sound bad because of bad setup. so hitting a string with the guitar on the stand tells nothing about the quality of the guitar. oh and ahmm virtuoso?? i'll just stick with the "good bluesman" description

  • @mariosyjp

the resonance of the body is all about the wood it is made of, i don't see how the set up would affect that. and yeah, regular "good bluesmen" shred like that everyday.

  • @LfunkeyA well that's definitely not my definition of shredding but that's subjective. what is a fact however is that resonance has to do a lot with setup mostly at the bridge

  • @mariosyjp

the bridge affects the intonation and stability of the guitar's tuning. if the body resonates with the string, then the body is a good piece of wood. the bridge's mass is not that big for it to affect the body's resonance. but fine, call me wrong if you want to. i can't disagree just like that considering who this musician is. his knowledge in the area of guitars and guitar playing is obvious, i don't know you or how much you know, but you're probably right.

  • shh listen..its still resonating

  • What a beautiful guitar!!

  • Don't be fooled. The amp is the main producer of the sound.

  • @Johngtr13 don't be fooled, his fingers are the main producer of the sound

  • I didn't like the strat at first, but once I picked it up I just could not put it down

  • I've watched this video a thousand times and it never gets old. Nuthin beats a vintage strat.

  • You can never go wrong with

    a Fender Strat.

"you got it right the first time"

  • hes been wearing sunglasses

    (cheap sunglases, zz top anyone?)

  • @DennChooch or hes been wearing a zoro mask

  • finally some one said it. The trem is supoosed to FLOAT! everytime someone says something about my bridge floating on my strat i wanna smack em.

  • is it supposed to be floating?

  • Every time I watch this vid, it makes me wish I got a strat with a maple neck instead

  • Awesome guitar, awesome playing !

  • This second guy is so useless :P

  • I think his guitar is way too bright.

  • // his strat is more old than he ..

  • great upload!

  • can I have it ?

  • The reason I started playing guitar when I was a kid was because I wanted to know how these guys on TV (MTV) were able to play this instrument so instinctively and move thier hands up and down the neck with such ease.

20 years later, I watch this video and wonder the same thing.

  • @InspiretoVictory Here;s how you do it: Always push yourself to practice what you can't play until you can play it well.

  • ... he makes me want to play guitar again. very very passionate.

  • that song in the end where can i get the tab for that

  • that guitar is gorgeous!

  • wow

  • @OwnedRL

If the lighter string drives the body, you've got a pretty resonant guitar, (at least around B). High E tends to be a tad too light.

If you're looking at a ton of guitars to choose from, this could be a reasonable quick test.

I'm going to check out your awesome vids now because you must know more about playing and instruments than this guy, eh?

  • @graveljaw 'Drives the body?' you've got other people with their tongues hanging out (maxetc 'Ouch man :/ ) because they're easily impressed by language of the obscurantist....there you are, I can do it as well.

  • @clean3

I'll be sure to speak in less "colorful" terms for the masses :P Maybe I've been working on amplifiers too long. This terminology is fairly common. BTW, you're never too old to be hip...

  • @OwnedRL He must pick the B string because its one of the quietest so long as its under the gauge of 12 (Or maybe 11 and a half) And it is a very quick way to see how resonant a guitar is with the guieter strings. If its resonant with quiet strings it'll be resonant with loud strings. Would you rather pick up and play every guitar in a store or quickly test them? It can take hours to figure out what one wants in a store but this cuts the time down.

  • @101Volts i think most would rather play as many as they could before spending their hard earned

  • @101Volts It's a given that the lower strings will resonate...that is why he uses the B string.

  • @maxmychopstix shut up donk...you don t even know what a guitar

  • that's a cool trick with the tremolo claw at an angle.

  • i did not know strats were originally with a 3 way. i just assumed they were always 5 way

  • Sweet playing!!!!

    Check out my channel!!

  • There's nothing wrong with a PRS. Go listen to Johnny Hiland's videos. It might convince you to pick up a PRS.

    Maybe not ~

  • If "Leo got it right the first time", then you're referring to the Esquire/Tele, not the Strat.

  • I'm not being a smart ass, I sticking up for the telecaster because that's what friends do. You, by judgment of your actions, don't have any friends. So please before you post something, ask yourself, Why?

  • You sound like a monkey who failed at using a thesaurus and fails at any linguistics.

  • kdjfnvjvd: cool comment and nice sens of humor... cheers from spain.

  • unbeatable clean tones from that strat!

    god, i love strats! :D

  • Wow, you play guitar vary good, mean!

    Yeah, I like it.

  • cool stuff

  • i actually heard this from my woman first!.... I asked her if she wanted a vibrator and she said "No,i'll jus use ur B- string".

  • @kdjfnvjvd lol

  • @kdjfnvjvd No, actually she said d-thing, i was next door...

  • HA! Great b-string vibration on my American Special Mahogany strat by the input!!!!!!!!

  • thats interesting about the b string. Im going to remember that.

  • damn the trem block is sweet. thats the only thing my American Standard needs replacing is the crapy tiny trem block. I'm getting a Callaham block for it. Other than that I think the 08 american standard is tops.

  • ive always thought itd be cool if the pickups ha individual on off on switches like on a duo sonic or one of those things cos then u could get the usual switching + the 1st and third together, all three together and out of phase stuff

  • Buy a Tuscany 54. It does this automatlcally in 3rd position. tuscanyguitarsdotcom

  • i actually wired my guitar like that. single volume and 3 on/off switches

  • I luv beaten up vintage guitars so much! i bought my one from 79 partly because it is so scratched and live all around body and neck

  • this dude is smart when it comes to trem stuff =]

  • Hey, I really like this guy and his wonderful pleaying and taste, but i really don't know who he is?? Has he played in a famous band and i missed out, or is he some kind of solo guitarist? I'm sorry, if that's a dumb question...but I'm eager to know that...

  • @Elimnio He used to play with supertramp, he is a solo artist now

But he is know as LA's top guy right now

  • Aah, thanks! he really is a top guy

  • @Elimnio He teaches at GIT now

  • Yea well he's supertramps guitar player. He currently has is own band which is called the Carl Verheyen Band. I have some live vids on my channel, Check them out!!!

  • Actually steel is considerably cheaper, however it is more expensive to manufacture, so most cheaper guitars use a cheap zinc casting. I believe the new american standards actually use some kind of brass, which is even better (considering most bells are made of brass, and they sustain...like a bell).

  • I remember hearing somewhere (maybe even from Carl) that this Strat is from the 50s, but the color is different from the two-tone sunburst I'm used to seeing on 50s Strats (at least the early ones). Did late 50s strats have more of a three-tone color?

  • Fender started offering three tone sunburst on Strats in late '58. Not many of them out there. Carl's is way cool...

  • i commend players who use the whammy bar and i mean i love the stuff jeff becks been doing for a long time with all his whammy bar shenanigans - but i just don't play with it much - gimme a strat hardtail or a tele any day

  • Can you change the trem block?

  • @jofussdean No i lied, it can't be changed. Lol, just joking. Of course, it is attached to the plate, there are threee screws under the saddles. Loosen them or better yet take them off then unscrew them and the block comes off. GuitarFetish. com has an upgrade block for 20 bucks. It works great.

  • Yeah check below, we commented on that. The newer blocks are junk because of material, size and how far the strings sit in the block holes, this is also why it is sometimes hard to keep them in tune sometimes. I replaced the stock junk block on mine long ago. Such a difference.

  • shame leo fender didn't agree that he got it right the first time and was pretty upset that the company wouldn't let him change the designs once they were a household brand. G&L really were what leo envisioned

  • failure troll is fail

  • /b/rother?

  • /b/rother.

  • haha nice.first time Ive ever met one on YT.

  • Whats that? You say Fender Strats make PRS feel like toys? You dont care what year it is,a '57 Fender Strat will bury it? Thats what I thought.

  • oh, right, thats what I meant to say. Silly me. ;-)

  • why the B string? you can play any strig to see that or not? 0:24

  • just guessing, but it might be because the b is about as thin as you can go and still get that vibration. thats just a guess though

  • The B move less weight, being a thinner object still made of the same material as the other strings, and therefore the fact that it can still produce a sympathetic vibration means the guitar is well defined and detailed. That is all.

  • Does the player on the left hold the strat which belonged to Budd Guy ??

  • Start?

    I spelled strat wrong twice.

    Too many beers.

  • I like how at 2:15 that guy kind of comes out of nowhere,

  • thats true. i have a MIM standard tele and you wouldnt think it would sound good, but the resonance is incredible, and its so bright. you dont need a $4000 custom shop fender to sound great but it helps haha :)

  • I have a MIM start too and it is nice. You have to pick them up and play them because not every one is the same. You have to find that great one and keep looking till you do.

I found a $400 start that is as good as a $1400 one but it took me a while to find that one great guitar.

I did the same thing with my Les Paul.

    Be patient.

  • Another thing with MIM, some have the poo poo zync block and other have the full sized steel block, that makes a lot of difference in tunning stability, tone and sustain. I have a huge custom made steel block and arm from a machinist friend, bigger than the Fender block, and it totaly it different from the stock junk thin block, but the Fender standard full block works pretty well too.
