@Vitruvian42 Ever see the parody of him on the Simpsons? The ep where Bleeding Gums becomes ill & tells Lisa about his one & only appearance on The Cosby show. It's HILARIOUS.
Great banter and exchange. Jack Benny, Cosby and Cavett just keeps drawing it out. The era of the great talk shows Cavett, Gleason, Dean Martin, Mike Douglass. Bill had me grinning the whole time through-out the story. There is another great story Cosby tells on Johnny Carson about Shelby the great car maker, who gave him a gift of a car because he was a big fan of Cosby's during the I-spy period.
@casaraku1 Because of Groucho Marx whose trademark was a cigar every up and coming comedian would take up smoking the cigar. This is why you see so many, including the Cos, smoking stogies. They wanted to emulate the greatest comedian who ever lived - Groucho Marx.
MAN! If only talk shows were like this nowadays......you'd have movie stars being like "yeah man, me and Meldau had a shed with Kurt Rosenwinkel last weekend." But instead, I just saw Rihanna on Chelsea Lately talking about how she didn't even write the song her and em did......What happened to real music?
Watch here on YT the BBC Documentary, 'Guinea Pig Kids' & see how Dr's, Big Pharma & The City of NY treat poor, black & hispanic foster kids who are HIV positive. After viewing, please write Mayor Bloomburg & tell him this Nazi Genocide must stop!

this is Brian Blade if he was born in the 30s and was a comedian. But thank God Brian Blade is a drummer today and Cosby is a comedian ... though im sure Bill Cosby would have been great with some practice and i know for a fact that Brian Blade's hilarious
man...classic. interesting he came up around Lee Morgan, Reggie Workman, Archie Shepp around Philly on the same trip for awhile... and the nod to Elvin Jones (RIP). so good
Dr. Cosby is a wonderful person. I enjoy listening to him, I wish he was from my town. Philly is very fortunate to have him. Thank Cavettbiter for uploading this clip.
Bill Cosby is legendary. He does not even have to rehearse a bit to be funny. All he has to do is tell a story because he is the greatest story teller of all time. He is one of my favorite comedians of all time as well not just for the funny jokes, but because everything is wholesome too. His work on the stage is all about real life situations done in a very PG manner. He tells a story that you can learn life lessons from and makes it hilarious. He is a genius.
@MoGreensEye True, but he does a convincing job. I'm 63 now and sometimes find myself in a family setting, trying to tell longer stories of old to a polite young audience. Have mercy on us grandfathers...
@PixelPivot Yup -- Jack Benny! Now to see if Cavettbiter uploaded Jack Benny's segment of the same show! How 'bout that: TWO of the world's best comedians on one show! YOWZUH! :-)
This is hilarious! I saw him do this routine in Davenport, Iowa in the late 60's. He's a great guy. As a sax player and a devoted fan of Sonny Stitt, this clip had serious meaning. Thanks.
Bill himself had a nice rebuttal to the rumors of his death. Google him and go to his official website to see his "news". BTW: awesome story. Sonny Stitt and Max Roach - incredible!
This vid is one of the most-watched (I mean students and staff CROWDING around the desk to watch it) in the office of the Guitar Dept. at the college where I teach.
It is gratifying to me to see Jack Benny's reactions to Cosby's story, going back and forth between falling down laughing at it, and rapt admiration on Benny's face as he watches Cos tell it.
It is saddening to me that, when asked, none of those same students has any idea who Jack Benny is.
Jack Benny, according to his writers, was always very appreciative of good humor. They say that he would fall out of his chair and slap the floor when he thought something was really funny. As one would suspect, his writers enjoyed working for such a great boss.
I have also heard it said that whenever Benny and George Burns went out together, by prearrangement, Burns would have to drive, as he would have Benny laughing so hard that Benny would actually drive off the road if he were behind the wheel.
@tuxguys Jack died in late 1974, almost two years after this Cavett appearance. George Burns gave the eulogy at the funeral home, but couldn't finish it because he started bawling so Bob Hope had to take over. Jack and George were best friends.
My parents couldn't afford to give me drum lessons as a kid, so I used to tap everything with drumsticks. When I was older, I bought myself a set of drums and taught myself to play.
He's not making up the masters he mentions. What a great city and what great masters he mentions. Mr. Cosby... a truly great story teller ... a gift to all.
7: 50 I was in tears and by 8:08 I actually fell out of my chair.

The way that Bill explains jazz drumming is so true, so respectful ,so emotional, so artistic and so funny in the same time!
Great lesson by contradiction and great man full of humility! Respect!
All drum students should listen to that carefully.
