Yup. Gotta protect all those cops, firefighters, teachers, pilots, flight attendants, airline mechanics, etc. from those evil evil unions. Because none of the workers in these professions would ever want protection from government and businesses that would strip them of their rights as workers. Keep drinking that right-wing kool-aid and believing it when conservatives tell you that less rights=better for you. It's bullshit, ask anyone who's actually IN a union.
Andrew Langer misleads here, and proves Maddow's point. Maddow said that employees could choose to sign enough cards to unionize, OR could choose to hold a secret ballot. Langer tries to pretend that workers are losing their choice of a private ballot if enough members decide publicly to unionize. Well no shit, idiot. If enough members use cards to decide to unionize, THERE IS NO NEED for a secret ballot. Why would you hold a PRIVATE vote AFTER enough workers PUBLICLY voted to unionize? Idiot..
@da1073 Because unlike Republican women, liberal women are allowed to leave the house, and are exposed to the natural effects of the outdoors. They are not kept inside under the watchful gaze of their masters, taken out only to be used for sex when their GOP husbands cannot find any Young Republican Boys to take out their sexual fantasies on. Oh, and liberal women don't wear 6 pounds of makeup at all times, like Republican womenbots, so they actually look human. Now you know!
why would there be a need for a secret ballot if the "majority" of the workers have already decided to go union? this guy is a hack and the republican party would do well to change its tune towards labor. people are fed up and they aren't going to take it anymore.
Is Andrew Langer saying that there isn't indimidation by the large corporations? They convieniently take ONE GUY with Jersey accient to play on a Sopranos stereotype and scare off the public
How many workers are fired for expressing their legal right to join a union??? The union busting industry is $4,000,000,000 (4 billion dollar) cash cow.
You righties love to quote viewer ratings. What horse crap. I'll take quality over quantity any day. Keep drinking the Fox kool aid while progressives rule. Liberals are in power for the next 8 years and beyond. Regardless of FNC ratings.
I am in the working class and I am a conservative republican which most don't even know the difference. Its not all one party you need to get off of the blaim game. It was both parties and the new administration is not helping in the least.
The thing is the Republican Party is dieing, and if they do not change their policies to favor the majority (the working class) they will keep losing seats.
I agree. It's kind of poetic justice that by helping create the largest concentration of wealth in the fewest of hands the Republican Party has also created a big enough majority of poorer citizens who are seeing who's side they are on and start voting them out of office.
friendlier-gov does not "create" wealth....people who work do. Right now, gov is destroying wealth by stealing from taxpayers to give to the welfare crowd and the banks, who demand coroporate welfare. In fact, you libs used to whine about corporate welfare and war, but now that our pres is a democrat, it is ok. Wealth redistrubition has failed the ghettos, it has failed the schools, and it fails those who actually work to pay for these utopian ideas. Dems use welfare bribery to get votes
@da1073 The republican playbook of giving more and more money to the wealthy increases the national debt and hurts America. Trickle down economics is totally disproved. All it does is make the wealthy wealthier, and keeps them donating to and supporting republicans. Republicans care only for money and power, not about the nation or its citizenry. Wake the fuck up, republican fiscal policies have been destroying America since Reagan. They get idiots like you to advocate paying the rich.
@judyneric Bullshit, and the only thing dems care about is keeping the poor down and dependent so they can get keep getting elected. They exploit the poor in the cruelest manner, and ironicallyl, for the past 40 yrs since we have had more and more "programs' the worse the poor get. No need to call names, and try to control your liberal rage.
Unions more often vote for Democrats because they favorer the middle class and prefer trickle up economics that put money in the consumers wallets. Republicans know there is strength in numbers and thats the only reason they are trying to bust unions. A hard lesson they learned in the last elections. And all the union haters you run across are most likely bitter Republican voters that know they lost because of union voters.
How are the Dems and Unions doing in Michigan. They are generational Demacratic voters and there jobs are leaving faster than any other state, well maybe California. Oh, Demacratic there too.
The Union I belong too (9years) always tells us to vote demacratic, its not who there looking out for its because they lobby the Dems to vote thier way.
And, what is wrong with a secret ballot? It sounds like the fairest and tryest way to let people vote freely.
No they dont-they favor the rich CEO's of unions. Funny, I have a friend who bitched about Bush and how he was destroying her precious union. Ironically, she had a job the entire duration of Bush's "reign of terror...but just got laid off under the watchful eye of Obama, who is forcing companies to lay folks off cuz of the taxation and threats of more regulation. You union low level workers are being used by the upper class ceo's. HOw are the unions doing in Detroit?
@da1073 Were the effects of the Bush and Republican Economy supposed to magically disappear overnight under the new president? The damage done to America's financials due to their party-first, power-hungry, screw-the-majority-pay-the-rich policies will last for a years and years. They fucked this country in a serious way. Oh, but it's Obama's fault, I forgot, he's half black... and he was supposed to fix everything those corrupt republicans did over 8 long fucking years in one day.

Well, the people can watch Rachel Maddow, watch me, read EFCA, and come to their own conclusions, so your allegation really has no "there" there. You've ignored the relevant facts that have been raised, so there seems no point to raising more of them.
On the other hand, the fact that you've used the term "douche bag" twice in our limited interaction is rather noteworthy. To me it notes either a fixation on the concept, or a limitations in invective.
You haven't raised any relevant facts. You make insane claims, like thegov't doesn't create jobs, and then deny many examples of gov't jobs. If I say "X=X" and you say "No" there's no real reason to press the issue. You live in Neocon LALA land. What "facts" (really your opinion) am I ignoring? You and the IFL have been busted as liars, no wonder you'd rather whine about being called douche bag. People should watch Maddow and read EFCA 1st, then ask why you had to edit 74 sec. of maddow 4 times?
the title of this video should be "IFL proves its douchebaggery by editting maddow clip out of context" Take a look at the uneditted clip before bothering with this one.
What a douche bag..Heres how it goes, for you right wingers who are having trouble figuring this one out...workers are free to have either a signature card or a secret ballot with EFCA. Having both at the same time would be redundant. Before the voting the workers choose whether they want a secret ballots or signature cards. Part 2 below
Oh, and you seem to ignore the concept of intimidation. How lovely for you. There's been an historic disconnect between those who sign cards signifying a potential interest in a union, and those who vote for unionization in the end.
Signing a card isn't an automatic signal that you want a Union, anymore than walking into a store means that you absolutely have to buy something.
Im ignoring the concept of intimidation? Hardly, you ignore an entire industry with the sole purpose of intimidating workers trying to unionize. Wal-Mart called in a swat team of latter day Pinkertons in Loveland who scared the bejezus out of the workers there
Yes, you're ignoring the concept of intimidation. In point of fact, the secret ballot process protects workers from intimidation on the part of both unions AND big corporations.
And isn't it interesting that the states with the highest unionization rates have the highest unemployment rates, while those so-called "anti-worker" right-to-work states have the lowest, according tot he most recent statistics.
So yes, If a majority of workers signs cards, there is no need to do the ballotand if the secret ballot is done then there is no for the cards.
I love how Andrew Langer is fighting for Small Business against the evil unionsthe last small business fighting a union in my town (Loveland, CO) was Wal-Mart. This country has been blindly pro-business for the past 8 years. Enough already.
How about this, Bunnyt0es, businesses, especially small business, are the ones who provide jobs in this country. Unions don't create jobs. Government doesn't create jobs. 90% of businesses in America have fewer than 20 employees - they create 2/3 of all new jobs.
So, if you want the economy to sink even further, you want jobless rates to go even higher, than by all means, be anti-business. See how far that gets you.
Great, we can all get jobs in small business that employ fewer than 20 people. Is Taco Bell hiring? And as far as government not creating a jobI guess my dad never worked a day in his life 20 years in the USMC and then to Martin Marietta. Was I unemployed for those 4 years in the Army? I work for a large IT services company with government contractsI guess the people working on those government contracts are really unemployed.
That's it, Bunnyt0es, take a big fat dump all over the small businesses that are at the heart of the American economy. You don't want to work for one, you're welcome to work for the 10% of businesses that have more than 20 employees and provide 1/3 of all new jobs.
I'm not denigrating the military - that's your red herring. Defense is one of the few key functions of government provided for in the Constitution. But don't think for a second that defense "creates" jobs. That's a myth, too.
IN OTHER WORDS, if a majority of workers sign cards stating they want to form a union AND then sign a petition asking the Board to certify their choice of union rep, then the Board shall not order an election. OR, if a majority of workers sign cards but DO NOT get a majority to then SIGN A PETITION asking the NLRB to certify their union, the Board SHALL ORDER AN ELECTION. In other words, you need cards signed AND a petition basically asking to wave the secret ballot election.
I read it too. What it says is that IF a majority of workers sign a PETITION asking the LRBoard to recognize a person or union as their collective bargaining representative, the Board shall investigate the PETITION to determine whether or not a majority of workers have legitimately signed valid authorizations (card check) designating the individual or union in said petition as their chosen representative, the Board shall NOT call for a secret ballot election but certify that person/union as rep.
Wow, so I said the Unions are Evil, Worthless, Corrupt Mini-Mafias specializing in extortion and destroying entire sectors of our economy like the Auto Makers in Detroit. It's the UNIONS that are Worthless Garbage.
The Workers just want to work.
The Unions, much like the Government you love so much, just want to fuck the workers out of their wages and destroy the businesses they work for. But you heard what you wanted to hear, not what I said. Typical Leftie.
Unions had a place in history when they were needed. However, with the ability of individuals to seek legal soloutions in the courts, unions are no longer a neccessity. There are plenty of instances where individual employees have reamed a business out for a huge financial windfall when corporations have been acted unlawfully. Unions are totally inefficient from a productivity per hour standpoint and that is why jobs go overseas.
Although the secret ballot is a cornerstone of democracy, it JUST gets in the way of GIVING back to all the unions that made this Obama mess possible. Thanks RETARDS
common sense look at states that have union jobs and those states that do not. where are more people out of work?what industries are going under union or non union industries? union made wrench $35 made in china wrench $15 unions help china's workforce.
According to Reed Business, an opponant of this bill:
"Under the EFA, once a union presents authorization cards for a MAJORITY of an employer's workers, the NLRB must certify the union as the representative of the employee group for at least one year-doing away with secret ballot elections. "

Once again, "Meaty Fingers Maddow" opens her gullet and discusses a topic that she is ill informed about. Her arrogance and ignorance make me sick.
As stated above, unions were valuable at one time and were a tremendous help in workers rights. However, the need for them is now minimal, yet somehow they continue to strong arm their way into businesses and cause more problems than they fix.
Did you catch the editing this IFL wingnut had to do to get his nefarious point across? Thank goodness for pro-worker and voices for the middle class such a Rachel Maddow, Keith Olbermann, Chris Hays, the crew at MSNBC. I've had it with the likes of Bill Orally and Shawn Hannety. Wake up people. Don't drink the wingnut Fixed News Kool-Aid.
No kidding! They're just scared that union-busting thugs will lose their job security. I wish people who voted against a union *would* be known. No insurance, no living wage, no weekend, no overtime, no legal council. Their Ayn Rand exceptional selves can go to the corporate heads by their lonesome and beg for a raise -- which I'm sure that the beneficent lord shall bequeath. This bill could use some tweaking, but to come out against the very idea of unions is naive and/or nefarious.
Again, you're misinformed. I'm amazed at your concern for the union movement. Bravo, you've wised up and believe that employees deserve a voice. Thanks goodness conservative nut jobs are learning, slowly, but becoming advocates for the union movement.
I work in Human Resources and have been tracking this awful bill for years now. Maddow's an idiot and she obviously took George Miller's memo rather than actually READING THE DAMN THING HERSELF!!!
Why is the need moot (not mute) because the majority signed up for it?
Secret balloting protects the non-union member from the Union just as much, if not moreso, than it protects the Union employee from the Employer.
People have a fundamental right to abstain from joining a Union, and flowing from that, to not be harassed for it, especially within the confines of their own home.
"First, if a majority sign up for a union, the need for a secret ballot is mute. DAH!"
Um, no. Heretofore, the cards were filled out by people who were merely INTERESTED in POSSIBLY joining a union. It opened up the door. As is clear from the "former union stooge" (your verbiage, not mine), the process of getting cards in the hands of employees is full of intimidation on the part of organizers.
There has always been a massive disconnect between cards and those who choose to join a union.
But what's to keep a union thug from leaning over the employee's shoulder and suggesting that "gee, you've got a nice house/car/whatever" while shoving the card in the employee's face? I'd certainly take that as a threat against myself if I don't sign the card.

When I was young and still worked I was a Union member, and thankful for that membership! I have never crossed a picket line and I never will! The Unions are the voice of the workers, and the workers are the backbone of this country! Go Unions and Go Rachel!
You said it best... "when you were young and still worked." There was a time when Unions were vital. In most industries where Unions dominate that marketplace, that need has subsided.
Unions have become more of a hindrance on business than they are a voice of the workers. And what of those workers that choose not to join? Are they without a voice?
If workers are the backbone, Employers are the brain. A backbone that doesn't connect to a brain is pointless.
So one person can get cancer treatment so we need to change the medical insurance for the whole nation (same logic)

Langrrr 2 years ago
So yes, If a majority of workers signs cards, there is no need to do the ballotand if the secret ballot is done then there is no for the cards.
I love how Andrew Langer is fighting for Small Business against the evil unionsthe last small business fighting a union in my town (Loveland, CO) was Wal-Mart. This country has been blindly pro-business for the past 8 years. Enough already.
bunnyt0es 2 years ago 3
How about this, Bunnyt0es, businesses, especially small business, are the ones who provide jobs in this country. Unions don't create jobs. Government doesn't create jobs. 90% of businesses in America have fewer than 20 employees - they create 2/3 of all new jobs.
So, if you want the economy to sink even further, you want jobless rates to go even higher, than by all means, be anti-business. See how far that gets you.
Langrrr 2 years ago
Great, we can all get jobs in small business that employ fewer than 20 people. Is Taco Bell hiring? And as far as government not creating a jobI guess my dad never worked a day in his life 20 years in the USMC and then to Martin Marietta. Was I unemployed for those 4 years in the Army? I work for a large IT services company with government contractsI guess the people working on those government contracts are really unemployed.
bunnyt0es 2 years ago 3

LIARS!!!
FattKidd 2 years ago 2
I read it too. What it says is that IF a majority of workers sign a PETITION asking the LRBoard to recognize a person or union as their collective bargaining representative, the Board shall investigate the PETITION to determine whether or not a majority of workers have legitimately signed valid authorizations (card check) designating the individual or union in said petition as their chosen representative, the Board shall NOT call for a secret ballot election but certify that person/union as rep.

Unions are useful if *you* are useless. No wonder the Left is fond of them.

wow, so the firefighters and law enforcement officers who are apart of labor unions are useless. typical rightie

VerbotenDingleberry 2 years ago
Unions had a place in history when they were needed. However, with the ability of individuals to seek legal soloutions in the courts, unions are no longer a neccessity. There are plenty of instances where individual employees have reamed a business out for a huge financial windfall when corporations have been acted unlawfully. Unions are totally inefficient from a productivity per hour standpoint and that is why jobs go overseas.

Khirad 2 years ago 4
Again, you're misinformed. I'm amazed at your concern for the union movement. Bravo, you've wised up and believe that employees deserve a voice. Thanks goodness conservative nut jobs are learning, slowly, but becoming advocates for the union movement.
Keep up the good work.

First, if a majority sign up for a union, the need for a secret ballot is mute. DAH!
But because this nut job and his former union stooge interpretes the language wrong, this somehow makes it official.
Plus, the employer is not the one directing the union vote, the employee is. As you can guess, companies are too happy with the "card check" bill.
jpeter4333 2 years ago 2
Why is the need moot (not mute) because the majority signed up for it?
Secret balloting protects the non-union member from the Union just as much, if not moreso, than it protects the Union employee from the Employer.
People have a fundamental right to abstain from joining a Union, and flowing from that, to not be harassed for it, especially within the confines of their own home.
axlbonbach 2 years ago 2
"First, if a majority sign up for a union, the need for a secret ballot is mute. DAH!"
Um, no. Heretofore, the cards were filled out by people who were merely INTERESTED in POSSIBLY joining a union. It opened up the door. As is clear from the "former union stooge" (your verbiage, not mine), the process of getting cards in the hands of employees is full of intimidation on the part of organizers.
There has always been a massive disconnect between cards and those who choose to join a union.
Langrrr 2 years ago
But what's to keep a union thug from leaning over the employee's shoulder and suggesting that "gee, you've got a nice house/car/whatever" while shoving the card in the employee's face? I'd certainly take that as a threat against myself if I don't sign the card.

When I was young and still worked I was a Union member, and thankful for that membership! I have never crossed a picket line and I never will! The Unions are the voice of the workers, and the workers are the backbone of this country! Go Unions and Go Rachel!
wiskawind 2 years ago
You said it best... "when you were young and still worked." There was a time when Unions were vital. In most industries where Unions dominate that marketplace, that need has subsided.
Unions have become more of a hindrance on business than they are a voice of the workers. And what of those workers that choose not to join? Are they without a voice?
If workers are the backbone, Employers are the brain. A backbone that doesn't connect to a brain is pointless.
