  • Anita was a jazz singer all her own.

  • She had a rather large overbite and a big mouth, like Freddie Mercury. This makes it easy to get the sounds and tricks you want from the interplay between air and tongue and teeth and mouth, further modifying and fine shaping what comes from her vocal cords. You also need the right size tongue for the space you have in there, hehe. Thats right, I said it... She sure is a swell dish.

  • Love love love her. Knockout clip.

  • i am surprised at how present she is in these lyrics, how much she ‘acts them’ so subtly, with each line having a specific and truthful gesture or expression; a little ‘oh well’ smile or the ‘isn’t that the way it is’ nod of the head here and there

  • Gentlemen, you are absolutely correct - it's a beautifully rendered live recording with sublime mixing and maybe a sweet old-fashioned reverb plate (most likely 6x10 feet long) on her vocals (?). You can hear the subtle claps of her gloved hands, the room sound, with plenty of sonic headroom to spare, and of course her mic technique is impeccable. People's ears are so ruined by autotune machine music, they can no longer hear the real thing. Thanks for posting!

  • WOW!

  • お答えしてもらってありがとうございます

  • Hey this is great--How amazing it is to hear singers who have discovered that their voices are just as much jazz instrruments instead of robotic metronones . Hearing a singer use the beat and notes of a song as a guide instead of a confining box is to experience a voice soaring and being taken along for the ride. What a talent Anita was!

  • Yeah hard to believe these days with all the lip synched auto-tuned BAD (and I mean horrible) music out there that a live performance like this could sound so great: it's because of the Japanese concern for fidelity, the great writing and arranging, sharp playing by musicians, and above all, the artistry of the great Anita O' Day. I just watched the documentary again, it is great. Rent it or buy it, it's worth it. Lip synching!! Anita is laughing at some club in the great beyond.

  • Bassmess, what makes you thing she is not singing this song.

  • Thats a real set of comments. Couldnt argue with any one of em ! My take on it is that Anita was the greatest jazz interpreter of all time, with the best phrasing, intonation, and such a sense of swing, able to impart joy with her renditions. I am a solid fan, just as she was so solid a Jazz singing star.

And my thanks for this posting.

  • @Getzwho I think that your take on this song with Anita is perfect. Very well said indeed.

  • Am spellbound. She's not only beautiful, but has a rich rich voice and great phrasing, clarity, dynamics and of course she has that magic! Loved this song Thanks

  • singing live and such a great talent.. Yes, on key throughout....

  • I just want to add 2 cents :) I am a huge Anita fan and a huge live music fan and when you watch this DVD as a whole it is very evident that she is singing the whole time... it is quite beautiful. This is one of the best concerts I have ever seen actually... I hope they release more of her shows as time goes by.

  • bassmess- that's what sucks about the lack of talent out there today- people actually can't beleive that a singer can SING anymore!!! Singers are actually SUPPOSED to sing on key. jeeeeeeeeeesh

  • I think she's lip synching to a recording.

  • That's the real thing. Anita would sooner do cartwheels on stage than lip sync!

Do check out the now documentary on her it's very good.

  • I just learned about Anita O'Day in the latest issue of Downbeat magazine. What a talent. I just bought the new biographical DVD.

  • I wish I could give 100 stars, the Lady is that good! First experienced Ms O'day in Newport '58, and hooked for life. What a priceless talent! RIP.

  • things to ponder: what do you mean by GOODS? GOODS as MERCHANDISE? so your a MERCHANDISE PERSONAL MESSENGER. also, who or what is HARRY CUNT? HARRY'S CUNT or HAIRY CUNT? the former is not possible for MALES DON'T HAVE CUNT or maybe HARRY IS A FEMALE (never heard of a female named HARRY). the latter would make more sense. Furthermore, try to know correct word spellings such as: GODDAMN, CUM-DRENCHED, VORAREPHILIAC, DICKWADS, and HERPES-RIDDEN. is HERPES the only disease you know?

  • Yes, The mic is 110% a SONY C37. In the mid 60's was in the $ 600 price range..almost twice the price of a U67 or U87 later. The RCA, while a wonderful ribbon mic, has a different yet wonderful sound. (this is NOT a RCA microphone) Isn't it such a wonderful experience for us, all, even with compression and our small computer speakers....to be able to enjoy and apprciate the exotic microphones of that era.

  • 01azzman01 the best

  • she was a great singer...Nicely done

  • Wow! GREAT sound. Must be a Neumann or the 1963 equivalent. And Anita O'Day is phenomenal. She makes her OWN electronic effects. Talk about ahead of her time!

  • You got me curious, so I did some searching. Looks to me to be an RCA-DX or a Sony C37. Can't really tell. Japan tends to like to use Japanese-made goods over foreign-made, easpecially back then. Sony I'm guessing a Sony of some type. Great sounds, whatever mic it is

  • Outstanding; ms. O'Day puts all the singers today to shame, even with the studio tricks they still cannot compete.

  • amen brother.music today is all electronics synthesizers etc.yuk!

  • 1963?!!! Surprisingly good sound quality. More importantly the band sounds real tight and swingy and of course Anita herself is in top shape.

  • Yeh, that sounds wonderful. I put up the volume a bit. Well quite a bit actually ...

  • This is a class act.... Diva's are diffult, demanding perfectionists thats what makes them exceptional different. You can't stop watching you want more....

  • Is there more of this video? Would love to see it complete!

  • Yes. It's out (in the US) as Anita O'Day Live in Tokyo 1963. I belive Anita's former manager puts it out!

  • The dvd of this show really is great.

  • Completa, completa por favor :(

  • I actually met her in Philadelphia in the 80s. She was a mess, but she was so nice to us between sets, and even wrote a "get well" note to a friend of mine who was home sick. I'm glad I met her and saw her perform live ...

  • I saw her at Bach dancing and Dynamite on the west coast near Half Moon Bay..(montera) and well, she was older, but the thing was she was such a controller...stopping the piano player, etc. It's part of her nature. Extremely bossy. It did not wear very well. Note how she tries to control the time at the beginning of this.

  • Her singular vision led to her creativity, not too many Big Band "girl singers" made a successful transition into jazz.

On the idea of how she aged, it beat the alternative. There's a reason her bio was called High Times Hard Times. A lot of folks who shared Anita's level of high times didn't age at all.

  • Yeah Django, and you can thank Johnny Poole (her long time drummer) for her perpetual heroin addiction through the years...HOWEVER, it doesn't get any better with Anita than (now on CD) Anita Sings The Most w/ the Oscar Peterson Trio with Poole added on drums. (some copies say it was Jo Jones on drums. That was not correct, it was Poole)

  • Really could not care less about Poole. It's Anita's music that matters.

  • sclogse1, she is not "trying to control the time".

She is leading the band and starts all the tunes.

  • Anita had a unique sense of rhythm that made every song she sang her own. What made her seem bossy was that she was a woman, and she had more rhythmic chops than 98% of the men in any band she sang with. She didn't suffer hacks gladly. She played with top musicians all her life and earned their respect.

  • it's song i feel so good i'm cry~

  • I don't have the whole thing. However, you can find it in the US on DVD, it's called "Anita O'Day Live in Tokyo '63". It s put out by Anita's manager so it's the real thing.

  • Yes, thanks, I know that wonderful CD, but I didn´t know that a DVD exists, thanks again!

  • She was amzing, but it[ s a pity to have only one snippet. Could you post the whole thing??? Please!

  • Man, her facial expressions and hand gestures add a whole level of cool to her performance. Genius.

  • People should use this for rickrolling. That would make the world a much better place.

  • What's rickrolling?

  • Wouldn't be a rickroll then would it :)

  • WHAT GREAT AUDIO!!!

  • I have to buy that DVD. This is a truly great performance.

  • wow is there the hole song out there on video??? THANKS BOBBY

  • Yes. This concert was filmed for Japanese TV and the whole thing is out on DVD in the USA as "Anita O'Day Live in Tokyo 1963"

  • I have thought a lot about Anita's singing, but I never considered her hands!

  • I've always got the time O'Day for Miss "Crazy Hands" Anita!

  • Madonna eat your heart out!

    THIS IS THE REAL THING!!!

  • I believe this was recorded in a studio for a tv broadcast in Japan. The cd is now available as well as the video! It is an amazing document of Anita in her INCOMPARABLE prime!

  • God, totally authentic. A genius. The best.

  • I am quite sure this is both, live and in a studio. I belive it was before a live television audience.

  • Is this audio really live? It sounds like a studio recording...too clean to be live. Maybe I'm wrong. Nonetheless and regardless she had a beautiful voice. RIP Anita

  • Anita O'day is the only person I've heard so far who I believe gives Ella Fitzgerald some compitition. She has a rich melodious voice and perfect timing. It is 2007 almost 2008 and I've yet to hear a jazz singer who can match Ella Fitzgerald's talent. The modern jazz artists like Diana Krall and Dee Dee Bridgewater, none of them come even close. Anita O'day did what I thought was the impossible. She matched Ella Fitzgerald in talent.

  • The audio for this concert is available on the Kayo label (called Anita O'Day Live in Tokyo 1963), it came out last year.

  • goosebumps! this must be on some release- which I would love to see. great comments, too. *****

  • Anita, love you babe!

  • PS--She was accompanied by the Stars and Stripes (I think!), an excellent Japanese big band. They were playing really well, until they tried to trade fours with Anita---she cut'em REAL BAAAD!!

Anyhow, whether or not this was the concert I actually attended, thanks for the great memory!

  • Wonderful!!!

I may have been at this concert. I was in the U.S. Army, stationed in So. Korea, and took a couple of weeks R&R in Japan for Christmas '63

and, sunnavagun, there she was in Tokyo. For 44 years, I've never forgotten it.

  • wow!

  • More!!! Great stuff!

  • A million stars for Mrs O'Day anytime.

  • Fabulous Voice - Thanks

  • O this is great thank oyu so much gr Dennis

  • Es la mejor
