Will an aluminum wire work the same way? At, I think that's what I have (it's silver with no string-like properties). It came in this old electronic kit, so I was just wondering if I could use them.
@FireHax0rd Soldering aluminium requires a special type of solder, but your wire's very unlikely to be aluminium, more likely just pre-tinned copper or solid core (as opposed to stranded core which looks like string) copper.
your not connecting the wires properly. You should be connecting them horizontally, rather than just twisting them in a way that makes the wire stick out like that.
This very well be a great technique but, your solder on this joint will be weak and it will snap under very much little heat. I suggest applying heat then putting the solder between the wire and then the opposite side of the wire the heat will attract causing it to do something like a chain reaction.
hey really a noob but..thas exactly what i did but i dont have a soldering iron..so is this possible with a matchstick or lighter..just stopping when the metal starts melting..?
ty for the close up look... my bro in law is taking a class on this and I cant solder worth a dime... needless to say he can be a cocky jerk at times. kinda motivated me to learn a little in order to avoid the jerkieness...
@2Luke try heating the component and applying the solder to the component, not melting the solder on the iron and trying to make it adhere to a cold component.
This is totally the wrong tool for the job, desoldering guns like this are far too powerful for typical electronics soldering.

@KX36 buy some glasses that is a normal soldering gun with a smaller tip

@FireHax0rd No, use 60/40 rosin core solder. Eliminates the need for flux and almost all electronics require rosin.
60% tin / 40% lead.

You don't twist the two wires like this........
K1ass1K 2 years ago
it;s better to do that tho because the two wires wont move away form each other
Josmaster555 2 years ago
yes you do

If solder runs into or extends into the insulation on very flexible wire, is this a bad thing?
biped19 2 years ago
yes, it will short and not work

very good!

Nevermind,I see what type of wire your dealing with now. Good job!

@williedeestyle1982
absolutely correct. this is a really bad joint.

@attackeagle why is this a bad joint?

try that i'm curious about it,but don't think it would be hot enough

check out the video here at youtube soldering with a lighter,it works!

@rish000 it is possible, there's a vid of it on youtube, but you're highly likely to mess it up; just buy a $10 soldering iron.

Thats very thin solder ;)

Thank you! I second what Matt said. lol

Ooohh... So you add the solder WHILE the gun is touching the wires.
Thanks a lot.

how come my solder doesn't melt like that. it only forms a drop and won't melt properly.
2Luke 4 years ago
use a different lead/tin mixture and it should work fine.
