  • Beautiful! It's the best video/audio I ever listened for the fantasy no. 7 from Telemann, but it's a pity the video is not complete :(

  • @juliosax93 Thanks!

  • how much does one of the sankyo cost?

  • im making a wooden flute currently :) outlandish, i know, but im a very crafty girl. this wideo only makes me want to finish the flute faster!!

  • Out of style with vibrato and bad quality sound.

  • omg id kill for a wooden flute like that! jk btw

  • Which Telemann piece is this?

  • This piece got me into a youth orchestra!

  • Comment removed

  • such an amazing rich ancient sound

  • wen my dad was in the old days he played the flute on halloween i thik he still remembers how to play it

  • Wood has incredible properties, it sounds way better than the metal flutes.

  • I want one of these. I love my Sankyo and she needs a sister.

  • How much does a Sankyo wood flute cost?

  • @13anigirl $11,000 to $22,000, depending on the configuration (C or B foot), options (C# trill, split E, etc) and wood choice (grenadilla or cocuswood, with cocuswood being the considerably more expensive of the two).

  • It is so rich! Is it harder to play?

  • This Sankyo wooden flute is absolutely gorgeous in tone!

I wonder how much better the New York Philharmonic would sound if the entire flute section were playing this flute!(?) Saw you on the Christmas Special Nina!

Best wishes to all - Daniel.

  • Oh dear God, that is a beautiful instrument!!! I hope there's a wooden flute in the exhibition room at the Louisiana Flute Society this year!

  • Are the fingerings the same as the flute

  • woah!

    were can i buy one?

  • I'm playing the traverso and to be honest I don't like the vibrato in this performance...I think it's too much which gives the piece a Romantic instead of a baroque touch!

  • that is a very good sounding flute! Do you like it alot, Nina?

It also has a very pretty look.

  • @usefulmusic wooden flutes are harder to find, metal flutes are tougher too.

  • good lord thats a huge flute, how long does it take to get good breath control when you first learn to play? im hoping to buy a wood flute pretty soon

  • so which is better, the wood or the steel? I only have a steel

  • I so want a wood flute :( first loan FTW

  • Wood flutes sound better than metal flutes - 'better' in the sense of more how one imagines a flute should sound: warm, dreamlike, romantic yet light-footed. Why do the overwhelming majority of orchestral players use metal flutes? Fashion, peer pressure?

  • @usefulmusic Your definition of better doesn't fit most of the modern rep for flute or orchestral playing. Power and projection is very important. Also, this is not what I imagine or have ever imagined flute to sound like. Wooden flute don't project very well. And, you can't get the same power or push out of them that you can on a silver/gold/platinum flute. I don't think the Ibert Concerto or the Prokofiev sonata would sound "right" played on a wooden instrument.

  • Chris Abell makes some of the best Wooden classical flutes.

  • Big Piccolo! I want it

  • Captivating sound. I`m glad i came accross this.

    Thanks Nina.

    Fred.

  • when i was in middle school and currently in high school i have always been told to keep your flute straight and level to the side, if i did what she was doing i got yelled at. They said that you get a better sound when it straight...... ummm yeah, her and pretty much ever othere prefessional flute killed idea for me (:

  • lo i love to hear ur music

  • What a beautiful sound.

  • wonderful :x good job :x:x:x

  • it doesnt have a mouth piece does it ?

  • @chickayah27 Does not appear to , but some models with thinned heads have. I have an old Radcliff which has a mouthpiece.

  • u are like beyond good I love how you sound on this flute .

  • So pretty. [=

  • Haha silly question, but was it heavier than a silver or gold flute?

  • Hi Nina, I´m a brazilian fan and have a question!

I can´t play telemann i don´t know, i so very fast but cant play this ='(

    Thank you nina.

    I love you ^^

  • Have you ever tried the Radcliff model ...I have two lovely old ones .(..not for sale!!)

I got them from Robert Bigio of London..see Lisnageeragh where I have a few trad tunes. Regards

  • @Lisnageeragh I'm not familiar with that but thanks for letting me know

  • Hello Nina! I have a question. What differences did you notice in this flute vs. your normal steel flute in terms of sound??? Also, what song are you playing??

  • @DumbledorezArmy I am playing Telemann. The wood flute is warm and round and sounds more like a Baroque wood flute rather than the silver or gold of modern flutes (not steel).

  • @ninaflute ...then why are you destroying the lovely natural sound with your machine like vibtato????

  • @ninaflute Hi Nina!

    What Telemann piece is that?

And since this is the video of the wooden flute; do you think it would project in an orchestra? o:

  • Would this flute be acceptable for an All-State audition???? Also, what are the benefits of wooden flute playing????

  • i want that flute....... really really really really really really really bad....

  • I do detect some reverb type acoustics in the room which always make your tone sound better than it really is.

  • She can stand with the best of them, she's got some chops !!!!!!!

  • EPIC WANT!!!!!

  • thanks nina for the tip

  • I want one. :D

  • Nina I LOVE how you sound on this flute - its reminds me of Alan Marion the sound really dances with characterisation!

  • Thanks, Jane.

  • you need to hold your flute higher

  • why.

  • @iheartseptimusheap the way you position it is irrelevant to the sound produced. most band instructors are misinformed about this and call it bad posture. the main reason instructors want it parallel is for uniformity in the band line (if flutes are sitting together or marching) but freelance or solo, position is completely up to the player.

  • bit ironic that your REAL FLUTE project uses sound effect editing O.o

  • You should really fix ur "psss""psssss"

  • hey nina, wat book do you buy for this song?

  • That's an awesome wood/ fat flute! :)

  • The warmth from a wooden flute is beautiful. Piccolos too.

  • beautiful in so many ways !!

  • Has it been said how many flutes she owns?

  • she's so beautiful. is she married or seeing anyone do you know?

  • @spiritintheskyie It looks like she has a wedding ring on her left hand. Too bad though, you might have had a chance.

  • oh no! u r right. hopefully she's unhappily married. mind you, i've now found Nadia and Annie Labrie, who are beautiful AND they are twins, so we could have pleasure in stereo. Nina had better try harder or she will lose me. maybe she could join us all for some surround sound fun.

  • Incredibilmente dolce!

    Complimenti!

  • ahhhh .... soothes my soul...

  • You sound wonderful as always,I am going to try that same piece with my old wood flute Made around 1890 I just got it totally overhauled from a Great Crafstman on flute that are very hard to find these days anymore, His name is Jerry Shurr from Jenkintown Pa. He's also has a website chect it out,You'll love this ole fellow. So if you ever play in Philadelphia and your flute happens to be needing an adjustment or a quick repair, Look him up:o)

  • thinking which to buy a yamaha wooden flute,

a sankyo wooden or an irish concert flute..

  • omg that was amazing!!

  • previous comment was to Rachthebandgeek

  • The tonal quality of this flute is exquisite!

  • you're a fascist, sethanim.

  • such a pretty sound.

    tehe bassoon-flute :D

  • thanks. actually i've never got anger at you. but please stop sending me those messages of your own business, alright?

by the way, don't you think the background flute sounds very nice, do you? it's wooden-made and looks quite the same as the north korean and irish flutes. ^^

you know it's harder to play than bamboo ones.. but sounds so warm.

  • what are you talking about.?

i just got disgusted with receiving

such messages sent from you more

    than 20 times within hours.

nothing my business, but all were

    your own self-centred matteres only.

    even friends sometimes need

    manners.

  • how is it different, when you playing the wooden and silver? i love the wooden sound and its appearance.

  • great sound. How much is the room contributing to the resonance. It would be interesting to hear a silver flute in the same space. Was thinking of buying a Sankyo wood flute but I bet it would be a luxury as a second or third instrument

  • Absolutely gorgeous *tears of joy* t.t

  • I just listened to your 10 Flutes videos and then this one and would have to vote no contest IMHO - the wooden flute has a much richer tone with more resonance - very pleasant to listen to... I suppose the metal flute sound could have more projection and cut through in an orchestra situation??

  • im trying to get wooden flute, the sound just flows so much easier

  • very good ,I like mach ,is great

  • Nina, I just saw this today! Why didn't you get the wood one instead of the 5k (which is also nice by the way!) This is gorgeous!!

  • Very nice! Wish I could hear it without the sound edited... the echo gets old.

  • check out Cuban flutists! They play the Irish(?) ebony-silver D flutes and generally up in the top range with tremendous facility and creativity.

The tone of the wood blends really well with the violins (and cello) in the traditional (and hot!) style called Charanga.

A great start is to listen to La Orquesta Ritmo Oriental (pisicore's channel has very good versions) and Jose Fajardo is famous as well as Pupi Lagaretta and many others.

    enjoy!

  • wouldn't it be great if all the flutists in the world played wooden flutes? such a wonderful sound!

  • I love this. What pieces was she playing?

  • wow that makes a difference. It sounds great as usual.

  • GOD. YOU'RE SO GREAT. I LOVE YOU D:

  • ...wau nice ......

  • I really like this sound, especially for Baroque pieces. I hope to get a wooden head joint for my flute sometime soon!

  • amazing playing of course. but i prefer your playing on your gold Sankyo flute :)

  • Muito bom...gostei do som da flauta de madeira. Parabéns pelo bom gosto e pela tecnica.

Very good...I like the sound of wood flute. Congratulations for you good performance and good taste of music.

  • A calm, hollow sound....

  • how many flutes do you own

  • It was a very wonderful tone.

It is the state that I order Wood Flute from.

I am impatient for that a flute arrives

  • the sound difference between metal and wood is emminent!

  • Would you say that playing on this is any harder than playing on a normal metal flute?

  • writermberblack: not really....

  • i recently got a wooden-made flute with keys.. but it's so much annoying me;; it's very different from the bamboo flutes without keys.. i love the sound of wooden flute, but something annoys me when playing.. its sound don't fly(cry) as much as i want.;) do you have any advise for the breathing..?

  • Is the wooden flute in the same key (F) as a regular flute?

  • kristinaheckel: This flute is in the same key (C) as a regular modern flute

  • Wow, I actually knew that it was (C). Haha, but anyway, your flute playing inspires me. And I don't even play the flute, I play the oboe(:

    Thanks for posting your videos!

  • wow this is amazing, well done, i love the wooden flute

  • Hey you're pretty good with flute. Can you please tell me the title of this piece? Thanks a lot!

  • That's Telemann's fantasy in F major.

  • Sorry Alain, but that is fantasy #7 in D major. Telemann used to compose things for flute so that you can play them in a recorder a minor third above, so maybe that is why you said is in F major. That also happens with his flute duets.

  • Rayado, you must be right, I just forgot that my edition (for recorder) was a transposition !

  • wow! you play the flute great!!!!!!!!! I am a flutiste too .

  • sounds great! :D fantastic!

  • i hear overtones of English Horn, oboe in this instrument. absolutely gorgeous.

  • there is something so wonderful and smooth and wet about the sound of a metal flute, but that wooden flute really is a great instrument! I happen to like bamboo the best, but the most fun is to see how different materials really bring out so many different charachteristics in the sound and playing, dont you think? :)

  • in my opinion her 14 karrat gold flute is very unique but if i had to choose between her flute and the wooden flute i would rather choose the wooden flute because of its righ sound

  • the wooden boehm flute has a really unique sound. i really want to get one to achieve that softer... umm.... wooden sound to achieve different tone colours in different pieces. it would be really nice for baroque pieces since a metal flute sounds beautiful in them, but sometimes doesn't always capture the essence of the piece.

  • Finally record it once live with you playing the right hand on piano one on wooden flute with a solid gold flute the left hand of piano one and two good pianists playing one hand each of piano 2: Four hands are better than two-Then record the same again you playing the gold flute on the right hand of piano one and the other flutist the same wooden flute on the left hand of piano 1 and post the one you like the best. However first just play the right hand to see if you like this music on flute.

  • Then record the right hand of the third movement of Bach's piano concerto in d minor for 2 piano's keeping in mind that pianos weren't invented then, on the wooden flute and record live you playing your gold flute playing the left hand of piano 1 along with your recording of the right hand on the wooden flute. If you have a friend to play piano 2 on a grand piano with your wooden flute or with the final recording the standing waves formed will capture a lot more of the glory of your gold flute.

  • ...contd. The most dynamic music has been written for piano, and the most dynamic composer was J S Bach and his most dymanic work, his piano concerto in D minor, and the most dynamic arrangement concerto for two pianos in D minor. Tell Sankyo that you could spread their name to about 59,000,000 million viewers if they let you use their wooden flute and the deal lis that if you get even over a percentage of that they pay you for that by giving you one of these flutes. ...contd...

  • Dear Nina, look up Fun2 guitar Pachelbel's Canon, it currently has 59,783,505 views and since there is no reason why you couldn't get that many views, if you want to, then I would definitely suggest the wooden flute for that, even though your gold flute probably blows the wooden one out of the water live, simply because human recording has not yet found out how to caputure that extra dimension that gold and platinum offers. to be cont.

  • ...cont. You will find that the very best of all four examples of the same piece, 1. live solid gold or platinum will easily be the most overwhelming to a live audience 2. the wooden live version next 3. the recorded wooden version next and last by quite a margin the recorded metal, which ironically in reality is the best. A to H there are 40,320 ways to arrange them take H away and you are only left with one eigth, 5040, with a loss of 35,280, but with A to G only 4320 metal is Ato H, wood A-G

  • ...Continuing: What I said about metal flutes being as superior live as the wooden record more completely making the metal sound empty which they are compared to how they really sound live, you can test this by using a high quality sound system that can play back recordings of both your solid gold or platinum flutes sound like and like you compared the 10x flutes on YouTube you now compare exactly the original live performance with the recorded performance of both the metal and the wooden. cont.

  • ...Human brains of ardent flute enthusiansts that have heard this larger than can be recorded tone, will make up the lack on the recorded versions as though it were there, but for those whose brain is not doing that and hear only what is actually recorded, the metal will seem grossly inferior to the wood. I have driven myself almost to distraction over the last 42 years blaming myself why I do not have that glorious tenor sax tone in recordings I make, that I hear easily live. To be continued...

  • Dear Nina, I need to limit what I said about David Childs and Steven Meads as pertaining to your wooden flute playing, as applying only to recorded playing as I did not take into account that you cannot record the part of the tone that makes solid gold flutes worth their money in the right hands. The best flute I have ever heard by a huge margin was a gold one live, and that player may not be as good as you Nina. So use wood for impact on recorded performances and metal for live. To be continued

  • dear tubatenorsax: too bad I don't own a wood flute, I was just playing it at the convention but it is not mine! Oh well, I don't feel too sorry for myself since I love my gold flute!

  • ti amo(i love you)

  • Dear Nina, listen on YouTube to David Childs and Steven Mead both on euphonium. Childs leaves me cold, Mead tempts me to take up the euphonium. So also your Sankyo wooden flute, or any such wooden flute is what allows you to be a Steven Mead on the flute.

  • does this wood flute have the same fingerings as the flute?

  • yes

  • Reguardless of whether or not you respond to this, I just wanted to say, thank you soo much, Nina, for making vlogs. I think what you're doing is outstanding! With the exception of lessons, these videos have really improved my articulation, vibrato, tonalization, and breathing. Btw, I love how you play the flute. You make it seem so facile and easy. I REALLY look forward to seeing your future videos and tips and I will support you all the way! How long have you been playing?

  • Too much vibrato all time. Why?

  • Uh....wood.

  • ohhh i love that

  • Demasiado vibrato todo el tiempo. Por que?

  • por ce si dahhh!!!

  • Wow, I want one so bad of these. I been trying get my hands on one! It's so hard to though!

  • i love wood flutes, I am going to have to save up for one!

  • Im so excited! My private flute teacher is taking us all to a flute convention in New York City this year and i'll be able to try flutes like this! There might even be contrabass flutes and other rare ones along those line [=

  • hi nina! i've watched ur vids countless times and i've noticed that you've never played piccolo. why so? just curious

  • Brava !!!!

  • what's so special about wooden flutes? (not that i don't love this one, I do) Do they sound better? I can't tell a difference

  • honestly they hav a nicer tone in my opinion than metal ones and when they are in the lower octave it sounds nicer

  • Excellent, a good player and a good flute = EPIC!

  • Nina - are you going to the NFA Convention this year? If you are could you fill me in on how I can get information on it?

  • Cool sound nina!!! i was looking some sankyo flutes in the website because i would like to buy a new flute but i dont know which, where im studing techinal repair and maintenance of brass and woodwinds instruments i have tested some flutes like yamaha, ideal, armstrong, gemeinhardt, prelude by selmer, and others but i havent tested a sankyo, what is your opinion about that flutes?

  • theres quite a bit of reverb. Does sound quite nice though.

  • What a bright tone!

  • Forget silver. I want that.

  • Thats a huge flute... is that meant to be an alto flute or is it that you have small hands and fingers?

  • it's just bigger because it's wooden.

  • this is such a beautiful sound coming from a wooden flute! You are such a GREAT flautist!!

  • I'm curious is wood flute same as dizi (chinese bamboo flute)?

  • No. The chinese flute does not run by the same scale. And most of the time the Dizi is out of tune with western music... that is unless your putting it into Hiphop where it'll match perfectly. But as some would argue, Hiphop isn't really music either.

  • Thanks

  • i agree with your statement that hiphop is NOT music

  • I think that that is just ignorant. By a technical definition, it most definitely is music. And as far as the artistic aspect, it is just as much music in its own right as any classical music is. Just because you don't like it doesn't mean it isn't music. I don't like it either, but I think it has it's place just as much as Mozart or Bach.

  • by opinion though it doesn't bring along as much emotion as any other kind of music. i wouldn't get chills listening to any sort of hip-hop, rap, or techno, as i would compared to classical and some forms of other mainstream music. it's all opinionated. i don't have anything against it really besides it's overplayed and i can't understand it sometimes

  • But it is still music. The definition of music leaves no room for interpretation or opinion.

  • music is always open for interpretation.

    that's what makes it music.

if you just play what's on the page, and put no inerpretation or opinion in it, then it's not music

  • It is REALLY hard to compare Baroque to Romantic forms with in classical music. So, to compare Hip-hop, Rap and techno(which are very Different forms of music from each other) To Classical genre is a non-sequitor.

HipHop and Rap are solid Genres of music. Infact, Rap is considered one of the oldest forms: Words/poetry/storytelling accompanied by complex rhythms. In the modern form, it is backed by complex chords. The repitition is reminiscent of minimalist musical trends. judge what you know

  • It's not. lol it's just people talking and a beep beep sound in the back. XD

  • exactly xD

    sometimes a beep boop.

  • or beepy deh booh bop. rofl fail.

  • skiddly diddly doo

  • There yah go. XD

  • I don't even remember writing that xD

But now I can say that I agree with my opponent on that argument. Sorry guys xDD

  • wonderful! I love that rich, warm sound that comes from a wood flute. Thank you for sharing this with us Nina.

  • this flute is awesome nina, but its like 13 grand...-_-'

  • My Band Teacher Always Tells Me Not tO Keep My Head Down When I Play The Flute .. Cuz It MAkes Me Lose Breath :D:p Lool But Good

  • Beautiful playing!

it looks like an oversized piccolo lol.

wood flutes sound warm and nice

  • awesome!

  • i also played a sankyo wood flute this year like that, and i liked it. It sounds so well!

  • Nice to see you playing on wood- now to get you away from all those keys... :) Beautiful playing!

  • Nina: Have you played another of the other wooden flute offerings? I'm looking at the Yamaha YFL-894HW and the Abell Wooden Flute.

  • is it cheaper than the 311 or 411? i got to know !!! please ...

  • Precioso sonido Nina, bravo!

  • are the fingerings the same one this flute as to the metal flutes?

  • yes, the key work and mechanism is like a modern (Boehm) silver flute.
