Yes, hamsters are cannibalistic. Pet shop operators must check the cages regularly for eaten remains.

Hamsters are not social animals. And the female is quite territorial. In the wild, the young leave the nest and disperse, not caring if they never see their own kind again. Keeping them together causes the fighting and cannibalism.

Babyhamsters always are so cute, but you never should disturb a mother hamster. She could kill them and eat them, when she´s distressed. This wheel is terrible. Hamsters could break their bones between the side struths or all the other wire things. Never use exercising balls, because hamsters cannot decide on their own, when to get out. Also they bounce against walls and furniture, because they cannot stop. Watch my vids on my channel for information about fairly hamster care!

@Andres0869 If I saw this long ago, I would had answered your question. LOl.! But if you're still interested, then yes they do. It's usually always best to not touch them 2-3 weeks, plus take out the father out too cause they can eat the babies or mate with the mom again and that will stress her out..plus she'll be too into caring for the babies inside her then her new borns... This is just from experience from myself and my friends, etc. Hope this still helps if you were still interested. :)

Ya you should just leave her, and yes, she's just protecting her babies. My advice is to leave them until around 2 weeks, and if she still is aggresive, wait till 3 weeks. But around 4 weeks, try to find GOOD homes.Oh and by the way, DO NOT TOUCH THEM UNTIL A LITTLE AFTER A WEEK. This is VERY important. If you touch them, then mom will go, "Hey, these hamsters smell weird?! AHH!!!! They're contaminated! Better let them go. Bye!" and they leave her babies all alone. Good luck!!

@sparklefairy5 I'm so sorry to hear that you had a problem with baby hamsters. I always handle any baby small animals from birth, after washing my hands and am very gently. Try washing your hands. If your hamster is used to you cleaning the cage regularly there should be no problem and the babies will be much nicer.

What are you talking about? I didn't have any problems with baby hamsters. You're just not supposed to touch baby hamsters until about 2 weeks. My hamster has never had any babies. I was planning to breed her...but it didn't work out (I'm not that sad about it..I think she's better off as she is. And the cage would be really crowded.)

@kittyzpwn303 Mother animals can be grouchy so be careful when you have your hand in the cage. In the first few days if you take a baby out and turn it over on its back, you can actually see thru the skin and see the milk the mother is feeding it in the stomach. Can you see where the heart is beating? Good luck finding good homes for the babies.

@susgop you shouldn't worry i use to have hamster. mama hamster got it under control they usually sleep under her anyways for warmth. Just make sure that their aren't any other adults hamster in the same cage because they MIGHT eat the babies but that is rare, just keep mama hamster well feed and hydrated and she takes care of the rest. ALSO don't touch the babies hamsters mom will denied them and eat them. GOOD LUCK

@mitcn012 she can watch my videos on how cuddly my hammy is! :D but becareful hamsters don't like bieng touched. they dont cuddle and like bieng petted. You need to be willing to clean out thier cage once a week no matter how tired u are from work or skool. you need to be finacialy secure enough to rush ur lil hammy to d vet and buy all the medications and supplies... and ur mom needs to kno they bite wen they are frightened or they think ur hand is food so be willing to forgive.

when hamsters are born their mothers lick them all around so that they'd know their mother's scent but once you touch them they will get used to your scent and when you put them back the mother will automatically eat them

@ambergreiz While some hamster mothers are nervous and may eat the babies, we routinely handle all our babies with no ill effects. The cage has to be cleaned and the babies are put into a clean cage with the mother right after they are born and at least twice a week after. Just use clean hands and talk gently to them as you move them

@xXPaujessionXx A little bit of any of your food is fine and cherrios without sugar coating is good. You can handle the babies from the start. Wash your hands first, push mom out of the way so she won't bite you and you can pick the babies up and look at them. Can you see the milk in their stomach?

I miss my black and white hamster who died on 21/4/2010....I named him Timmy. I bred my hamster with a white and brown with a hint of black girl and she gave birth to 12 babies and the runt of the 12 became very strong. I had a set of triplets (same fur colour) and my fav baby hamster that was born was a ginger and white.

@LuluNTutu So much confusion about hamsters. Syrian hamsters live alone in the wild and prefer to be alone as adults. They have large litters and the babies start to fight around 8 weeks. Any new mother needs calm and quiet. I can gently take newborns out and inspect them with no problem from day 1. Every now and then adults will eat babies but that means you have an uncomfortable Mom.
