the toeboard thing in warm ups isnt that big of deal i saw a video where brian oldfield said he would warm up at 84 feet when he wasn t trying to stay in the circle
There's a big difference between shot put and discus spin. Workin' on it right now, so im saying no shit. In discus, you really have to jump to have time to stop the upper part of the body and let your legs make the tension. In shot put, there is no time for this, the circle is too small for a big jump, you need to be on the ground really fast.
i just won my first track meet with a 38ft throw :) but that form is called the rotary its like the discus form called "wheel" but u spin in more of a straight curcle with the wheeel
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Hmm, well I highly doubt 71 feet.... and to tell you the truth, he is using discus footing. I would know. I throw shot put, discus, and javelin for my school. (threw with varsity at the age of 12)
@kcvcramer Randy threw 71 feet as a 19 yr old in this video....went on to be the world record holder at 75'10'' , still stands 19 rs later...he IS the best ever.
I don't think so, he throwed 2" more than ulf timermann, but its my belief that the thrower who puts consistenly is the best. ulf timermann has the most throws over 22m so in my mind he is the best ever. Not taking anything away from barnes WR but the numbers that ulf put up trumps barnes.
@70footer wait,if his practicing shouldn't he be trying to not step out of the circle? cause i thought it was a foul if you did. I'm just starting ( middle school ) so im not sure.
@therealjtgt he wasn't suspended for life lol he was put on suspension until he could pass a drug test and then came back clean and still won the olympics.
hes not using discus footing, i throw disc and shot at my school, the power stance for both is the same but with shot put you kick your leg much wider at the beginning, as he is doing here, you must be throwing disc and shot wrong
@kcvcramer Nobody cares to hear your bragging, stop trying to act like you know better than RANDY BARNES. He's kind of the greatest thrower to ever live. No big deal or anything, he just holds the world record and has one of the most effortless and efficient techniques EVER, as 70footer stated in the description.
@kcvcramer you dont know much do you... randy barnes is a beast and yea i bet his warm ups were a hell of alot farther than 75 in a warm up.... discus pshhhh
@kcvcramer oooo varsity 12 years yea bud let me inform you on some info... your full of crap, there isnt much different on discus and spin for shot put tecnique i bet you hit in the low 120's for disc and 37 for shot and fall during jav.
@kcvcramer so you dont know who randy barnes is then, possibly the greatest shotputter in history, defo the best american.Of course he like the rest of them were probably on roids then since there was feck all testing.
@kcvcramer He actually was ban for testing positive for steroids.
But yes he is the best out there.
It is 71 ft, not only that you are allowed to use discus footing so long as it's on your shoulder and that you don't fall out....hell throw it anyway you want.
And who cares if you threw at the age of 12 doesn't make you god
@kcvcramer so? the rotational technique is what the u.s. has mastered. so youre wrong when u say discus because the technique can be used for both. and no one cares u threw varsity at age 12.
@kcvcramer Your coach failed to tell you that almost every serious shot putter these days uses "discus footing" as you put it -- or "rotational shot put method" as it is officially called. The glide is old school, although you can still do well with it.
@kcvcramer ya i throw dicus and javelin and shotput ...and runn the 400 800 900 1000 2000 and preaty much everything and iv been doing it since age 4 soo ya im preaty sick to just like u
@kcvcramer You have embarrassed yourself. Despite your self-described wealth of experience, you have failed to recognize world class form and a former world record holder. Perhaps there is a life lesson for you in this?
Barnes used a spinner standing throw, its considerably lower than a gliders standing to full throw comparison. The equivalent for a glider would be a 20m standing throw, which 70foot gliders can do. C.J Hunter for example could standing throw 20m although he's a spinner he used a gliders standing throw.
I was throwing a consistent 54 with the glide up through my junior year in college. For fun, I tried to throw the Shot in the same technique I used for the South African. I hit 56' the first throw. I ended up that year with a best of 67' and my discus was already nearing 200'. I have taught nothing else but the spin ever since (over 25 years).
great vid, really liked the freeze frame "throwscoach Simpson", i would argue that it rly depends if you do any other events, the old national teams coach said that if you also concentrate on discus(using a rotaional technique) than using the shot rotaion will probably be more effective for you.
Does no one on here have coaches? The trend for the past several years had been toward the spin technique, but the glide is coming back again. Most agree, the technique to use depends on a throwers size, strength, speed and build, whichever suites them best. I think it has A LOT to do with the high school level and a lack of good coaching. Stepping out is a good way to practice getting your hips through and pushing out instead of up. It's called PRACTICE.
Yes I agree. I throw in Highschool. I dont have the best coach but he does what he can to get me to the best I can be. I have glided for all of my throwing life. But I really think that I would have a better time throwing if I were to spin. It very difficult to learn but so much fun. When I do it without a shot it seems perfect. But once I get the shot in my hand everything falls apart. I hate it.
gliders made a good showing at the olympics this year. I thought for sure that USA had it in the bag though. Barnes would of had it. He was always clutch with the spin in championships
gliding is for more beefy guys. smaller and skinny guys usually stick with spinning because they can generate more power. the gliders usually throw further, but spinners have better form. the current world record is hold by a spinner. today most coaches and colleges look at spinning because if u can get it ull be very good. I practice gliding but i usually spend like 10mins working on spinning every practice because i can't control it yet.

If youre ridiculously big like Christian Cantwell sized, I'd stick with glide, but smaller guys usually have a better time spinning.
Spin is going to be overall more productive, but glide will serve you just fine.
