Imagine if Seles in '91 had been in the shape of Monica in the late '90s, Monica would have never been able to last like this in the heat. She really moved so well before the... well you know, the atrocity in Hamburg... :(
My problem is Sabatini is she could come up with a big upset over Graf BUT then lost to Seles or Navatilova or Sanchez in the finals. She just did not go all the way by winning a sequence of big wins to win the big titles or slams.
Seles won this, but I really liked the way Sabatini played. She didn't have a lot of power, but she was ultra-consistent, kept her shots deep with good spin, always moved her opponent around and she was very athletic and graceful. She was beautiful to watch!
I prefer this tennis way more than the tennis today, so artistic. Looking to construct the point with topspin/power/angles...the women today just try to blow a hole through the court with the exception of a few. To me, tennis isn't the same sport as before, imagine if they made a baseball bat twice the size, would the homerun record not get smashed? That's what happened to tennis, the equipment now allows the kind of power that is women's tennis now...not as much talent needed now
if the stabbing never happened, seles would have been the greatest tennis player of all time, she was rising then on top about beating Graf like no other... Graf probably set the whole thing up and paid the guys family millions of money to keep her on top. and the guy sacrificed his own life for the better for his family. screw graf
I don't wanna offend any seles fan because we all know she was the best player in the world between 1991-1993 but her style was horrible, im finding it hard to watch this without wanting to jab myself in the eye with a pencil. It's a shame sabatini wasn't mentally stronger, she had wonderful technique and was a heartbeat away from number 1 during the summer of 1991.
These two players are two of the most talented in the history of the sport! The way Seles could generate powerful angles was incredible, and Sabatini's agility and gracefulness was impeccable. She was so powerful with her topspin from the baseline, and yet so efficient at the net with her touch. I even think she had just as good volleying skills as Navratilova. Great match, wish we had this contrast in styles nowadays. Let's hope Schiavone sticks around for a while.
I know, its because she was unconventional and played differently. she was not considered a classic player but had her own way of punishing the ball on the rise...and the traditionalists did not like that she was upsetting the textbook players..
@Houssak I think it was a bit more than that. She was really criticised at the way she pulled out of Wimbledon 1991, not saying anything for weeks, then releasing photos of her and her parents in a bizarre disguise and showing up at a well paid exhibition tournament when she should have been playing the tour. Nick Bolletieri, who'd coached her for years, also fell out with Monica and her family big time in 1990 and was very critical of Monica's father in particular.
My God. Say what you like, but Seles was a demon on court. So much of her fire reminds me of Nadal -- these monstrous hitters simply did not accept the idea they might lose a point. Such power and relentless offense/defense/offense/defense. Stunning. And here Seles was playing a Sabatini who was clearly at her very best, and at her best Sabatini was a genius.
My word, those girls fought like pit-bulls. Seeing this effort does underscore: if not stabbed by Graf-nut, she would have been GOAT.
Without being able to beat Graf on any other surface than clay and ReboundAce?
But with some all-time records for any #1 player: Worst loss ever in a slam final (26 16 to Graf, Wimbledon 92), loss to the oldest player ever (Navratilova, 1993)?
To think that at one time we had Seles, Graf, Sabatini, Navratilova, Capriati, Sanchez Vacario, Fernandez and Novotna all playing the tour....the good ole days.
Funny how Pam and Mary were so reluctant to compliment Seles in the beginning because she played differently....then once she was stabbed they warmed up.
@Houssak It's worth noting that in the early days, Monica really wasn't popular on the tour. Her opening match at the French Open in 1989, where she handed roses to the crowd, went down very badly with a lot of the other players
Agreed with KJ...

Her dad dying from cancer in 1993-98 must have had a higher impact on her than this minor stabbing.

Al parecer el partido fué mucho más reñido de lo que indican los números del resultado final. ¡Esto si es tenis!
