  • Staggeringly ignorant, xenophobic, imperialist, racist, gibberish.

  • @fancythathat yes, great isn't it...

  • shame buildings are of a disposable nature these days....!!!

and Art is in weekness in quality and substitude.

    what happened...?

I ask, do you know the answer to this,if so i'd be interested to here.

    Kind regards.

  • KENNETH CLARK

star man....so glad the BBC did this ...

    10-10

    fantastic document video file.

  • ROMEcentric CRAP

  • @ the folks who claim this is racist: I am under the impression that Lord Clarke is using the breadth, depth, historicity, and longevity of European civilization to analyze 'what is civilisation.' It cannot be denied that other cultures failed to develop to the degree (from the caves of Lascaux to the realists or a fellow like Isambard) that Europe's did. There are plenty of complex reasons for this (check out Jared Diamond), but it is the case, nevertheless.

  • Thanks very very much for posting the Civilisation series. This is a true public service.

  • You, Sir, are a God amongst youtube users for uploading this.

  • My White Race has NOTHING to apologize for - I am proud of its ability to conquer and create high culture civilizations. To hell with White guilt. My White Race had the "right" to leave Europe and conquer foreign lands, because Nature teaches an animal has the "right" to assert itself and take more territory to expand and advance its own kind. When my White Race rejects the anti-Will to Power ideologies it has foolishly embraced, it will expand and advance again. MIGHT IS RIGHT.

  • @NIETZSCHEAN14

as i read your message I thought " Is Nietzsche back from the dead?" and then I saw your screen name. Bravo, good sir.

  • @NIETZSCHEAN14 Nietzsche resolved "to have nothing to do with anyone involved in the perfidious race-fraud" (Nietzsche). You have been bamboozled, silly man

  • @Enormymous. The idea that Nietzsche did not believe in race, and the natural aristocracy between the races and in the races, is absurd. You need to do some more reading; try Abir Tahar's book on Nietzsche and National Socialism. That book should help to straighten you out. This exchange is over, silly man. :o)

  • @NIETZSCHEAN14 Try Nietzsche's books on Nietzsche. I believe you will find the very notion of a Nietzschean as oxymoronic as Nietzsche trying to praise some value system that requires no exertion of will from the individual, like race. Remember, the Overman is something you become in your own life as a result of your own efforts, not from some racial mythology as sickening as anything that slithered out of some desert manger.

  • Culture is simply the intelectual and material livestile of a community, with both influencing the other.

  • whcih is the organ work in the begining?

  • @alexilmagnifico The organ piece at the beginning of Episode 1, "The Skin of Our Teeth," is "Organ Chorale No. 3 in A-minor" by Cesar Franck.

  • Years ago, a VHS release of this series titled the opening episode "The Frozen World"...better to fit with the second episode title "The Great Thaw." But the latest DVD releases have gone back to this original "Skin of our Teeth" title....to agree with Lord Clark's narration. Thanks for posting these....but I'm curious.....why are two or three clips of the series in 360p, wheras most are in 240p. Not complaining, but the 360p looks SO good compared with 240p.

  • @doctorpapaya your right, the only problem was that in the 20th century people associated this to genetics and nothing more. If anything we have proven now that genetically we are basically equal unless ones parents are drug addicts or have some kind of genetic disease. Where in the past we believed it was all nature over nuture we now agree its both. the thing is that many countries havent had the same resources as europe to even begin to establish themselves and start using there will power

  • @doctorpapaya I can think of more than a few departments that would wince and cite this as an example of bad white attitudes that were unintentionally prejudiced, and certainly having some very outdated concepts, like the idea that a society can be more cultured than another. Every society has a culture, just different forms, iterations, values and world views.

To focus on Western Europe is fine, but it's some of Clark's language that is a bit outdated, as I'd term it, rather than racist..

  • @tyso7540 Your attitude is also pretty tired, people have been saying the same things since before I was born, but that doesn't make that point of view correct. The guilt-based abandonment of the idea that some things are better than others is a tragedy of the modern West. Thankfully few people in the non-white world suffer from it. It is a wonderful thing to move from the simple to the evolved, the crude to the elegant, and a terrible thing that the modern West has moved the other way.

  • @Bhoeble. You are right.

  • Thank you for this.

  • That organ music was killing me.

  • There is an extreme bias in this series, I am not going to say racist at all however there is a very Eurocentric point of view. How can any series about "Civilisation" be made without addressing Egypt, Sumer and Ur, Persia, the number system 0-9 which was invented India, Algebra from the Middle East, the preservation of mathematics by Arab civilisation. Is it because during this period in antiquity Europeans were still living in tribes and huts? Civilisation without Egypt=WOW!

  • This series never claimed to be about all civilization, but rather that one of which we are a part and which has produced such superlative works of art and architecture, civil government, law, and philosophy. That the west is not wholly original, owing some parts from previous civilizations, is an uninteresting and obvious fact . No civilization, after all, develops out of a vacuum.

  • Comment removed

  • @praxus Sir I perfectly agree with you verbatim, I'm just noting the extreme insensitivity of that era in labeling a documentary "Civilisation" without any other adjectives and showing this to children in the sense that European Civilisation is the only known civilisation to have existed. I agree no civilisation is born out of a vacuum however I think it would be considered public effrontery and castigated if this were made today and simply called "Civilisation." Again we agree.

  • @theone1087

I agree with you, but European historians have always been that way -- focused on Greek history.

  • hey Michelangelo @ .08---good then. GOODBYE "nurse". You enjoy riding "coattails"????? fkn get up stand up GEEZ----

  • THANK you!

  • Magnificent.Thank you.

  • I'm writing a short-ish art history paper on this series, thanks for posting it!

  • Does anybody know who Clarks tailor was.

  • In an age where much of Western society has been infiltrated by Marxists, subverted by atheists and put in mortal danger by Islamists, this series from decades back is wonderfully refreshing - may it get many more views, and may it help open the minds of those who watch it to the terrible treason that has been perpetrated by people in our midst.

  • What is the piece of music at the beginning?

  • Franck's Coral No.3 in A minor

  • Thankyou.

PS A little dog runs past at 1:52

  • As others have said, Thank you so much for uploading this.... This has been recomended to me several times and I wasn't born when it was broadcast, so this is my only opportunity to see it ! Huge thanks from me!

  • @d3nv1

the Civilization series is actually out on DVD, so there is that route. But this clip is a great intro to the series.

  • I've been looking for this everywhere! Thank you!

  • I just like how he says "intelligent, creative, orderly, and compassoinate ANIMAL" at 3:18.

lol. we are only advanced animals in a way. Its true.

  • Thank you so much for uploading this!!
