Very often, actors playing gay characters are actually straight - probably b/c there's more straight actors than gay ones, or in the population in general... But yeah, I don't think it was awkward for them - they all seemed to be good friends. It's a shame that neither of them seem to be very active on the acting scene after Skins though :/

It is never confirmed what exactly Tony's sexual orientation is, but to me, since Tony obviously likes girls, and since he continues to flirt with Maxxie even after their Russia tryst, and since he kisses Sid at one point, that he is probably bisexual. He just happens to be in love with Michele. Loving Michele doesn't make him straight and kissing Maxxie doesn't make him gay.
