"p" stands for professional dan rank. It began to be used as professional go players started to play on Internet servers, and so would sometimes face amateurs. The distinction is important, because a 1p player would typically offer a 7d amateur 2 or 3 stones handicap. These are awarded under strict conditions by the professional go associations of Japan, China, Korea and Taiwan, and once earned are not lost on account of match performance.
2-3 stones for a 7dan? i know a 7dan who's beaten pros in even games at the usgo convention. still i guess chinese and korean pros are the REAL test XD
well, pro dan ranks have nothing to do with the player's strength, just how much the player has accomplished as a pro. As a general rule, though, all pros are way above any amateurs...
wow it doesnt look good for white in the beginning black had 2 other uncontested 'possible' territories. its a great start for black dispite the operation in the NW corner.

Thanks a lot for this commentary. I like to watch better people play, but I don't usually know why they pick their moves.

p stands for a proffesional dan ranking.
After the highest dan ranking comes 1 proffesional dan, 1p in short
