What you folks fail to mention is the prius batteries are recycled sure the first battery has to be fully mined from the ground but after that you reclaim the metals and make another prius battery. When I was drunk once I saw a Prius parked on the street, which pisses me off in the first place, but then i walked around back and saw a Make love not war sticker, an apple sticker and a my other car is a smart car sticker. So I kicked out its passenger window, Had to go to the med center and get stitches, it was so worth it.
Say what you want, but the hybrid technology will improve and some day we will all be driving a hybrid or spending 8 grand at the pumps. The prius may not be the best car but there are other hybrids out there.

if you aerodynamically modify it, you can get 80-85 mpg highway and 66 city (look to spend a month of work and another grand or so) (things to do are, decrease size of passenger compartment, add a "boat tail" add vortex generators, make the carburetor run lean, and finally install a taller overdrive gear)

Engine is off when approaching the light, regen braking (no brake pads wearing out) is being used, and I average 4.2L/100km (56mpg)
My own previous cars include an Audi (nice to look at but dull to drive, a Volvo, strong, nice to drive, but slow and heavy on fuel), a small Ford (fun but smal, slow and still not as good on fuel), and a Volkswagon diesel (similar economey but small and felt like a tractor after the beautifully smooth running Prius)

if you don't like it don't drive one--It gets way better gas milage then other cars--so it's better for the environment and it saves people money, especially with fuel at almost $4.00 gallon. If you want to spend more of your cash on gas--go for it--I'll spend the money I save on gazillion better things then fuel.

@kookieless why thank you for the encouraging comment, sir. if you have done your research, you will see that the earth has natural warming and cooling cycles that take place ever so slowly. this is due to the "wobble factor" which is when the earth's rotation axis moves in a counter clockwise motion. as a result, this changes the average temps on earth ever so slightly. so yes, "global warming" is real, but it is a result of this "wobble factor" explaination and NOT from combustion cars.

a geo metro with the stock 3 cyl engine and a 5 speed manual transmission (pick one up for under $2000 us dollars) will do 45-55 mpg
if you aerodynamically modify it, you can get 80-85 mpg highway and 66 city (look to spend a month of work and another grand or so) (things to do are, decrease size of passenger compartment, add a "boat tail" add vortex generators, make the carburetor run lean, and finally install a taller overdrive gear)
anyway your prius can be economically ousted by a GEO lol

Engine is off when approaching the light, regen braking (no brake pads wearing out) is being used, and I average 4.2L/100km (56mpg)

My own previous cars include an Audi (nice to look at but dull to drive, a Volvo, strong, nice to drive, but slow and heavy on fuel), a small Ford (fun but smal, slow and still not as good on fuel), and a Volkswagon diesel (similar economey but small and felt like a tractor after the beautifully smooth running Prius)

Point 4- I am not smug or rich - in fact the Prius was cheaper than the Volkswagen (and we have to pay extra for Diesel miles) Also I don't yap about being green - I do however admire the great fuel mileage I get on my commute!
