i only think i heard the words "sellout" and "poser" in the metal community (when i comes to music) I just think it show how commit, and how much you metal heads love your bands. Maybe thats why they say your the best fans in the world. (but u may also be the most brutal)
But all that sellout is bull. yeah sure of the guys in the hair bands of the 80s sold out, for the fame. Sellout would be metallica not acting their age, and still looking and player the teen music
metallica maybe didnt intend to sell out they didnt know what else to do and producers took control of something they didnt understand . . .Just look at megadeth. . .Dave Mustain kept Metallica revalent by not being in the band . . .and he brought sophistication to the metal class he influnced if not invented
I agree with what your saying. . . .saleing out or not or what you want to call it what ever you do you got to do a good job at it . . .i dont particularly Metalllica sold out , i think the lost the talent that made them work first they lost dave mustain . . .ok they still had Cliff Burton. . . then he was gone god bless his soul. . .what is left are performers . . .kirk ,lars and james. . just dont have the missing element that only mustain and burton had.
i think those two perceros(colombian phrase) really show you the heart of metal in our country. you really show the roots of real metal, thats something not people can do. i've watched a few of your videos, my first was the cerebral bore one. you did really bring a band together. i know you dont want to take credit but i think we all know you really help them form.
people saying you sold out because you're giving out cards, silly bastards don't know the difference between promotion and selling out. agreeing with you Metallica just want to try something new my good friend taught me that :D
@gematria696 some interesting stores for you might be: the nuclear blast webstore, indiemerchstore, impericon, earache webstore, grindethic records, etc.
the best way to support the bands is of course, to buy it from the band itself, either in their own webstore or at one of their concerts :-)
Dude, I totally agree with what you say and I love all the Metallica albums which proves that, although Load, Reload whatever won't appeal to true metalheads, there are still people that like them.
Enslaved is another good to to talk about because every album is completely different from the rest.Compare Ruun To Isa or Frost or Axioma Ethica Odini. But, I never heard any bad reception from them.
Selling out vs being "commercial"..... Selling out is exactly what DarkRetroFan64 said. Just selling for the heck of it. Being "commercial" is what throws off everyone.
Anyone who has an album and sells it (either mainstream or underground/garage band) is COMMERCIAL. So most bands/artists from today are commercial.
Selling out is when a musician starts making music that is isn't real to them and more industry influenced. I could care less if my favourite artists are sighned or not, or how many other people listen to the music. As long as I enjoy it and it speaks to me, I love it.
metallica has been selling out their concerts since they started touring!!! when you all are at a concert look around if you see all the seats filled that is (sell out) the band sold out the arena! that is what many band wants, to sell every seat in the house. they make their money by touring not selling albums. people dont know shit about making money, and there is alot of metal bands that continuously sell out their concerts.
@Hitchhikeroftheyear If you think that making Lulu was selling out, you dont obviously understand a shit about what selling out means. With Lulu and St. Anger Metallica actually prove they are not trying to sell out, but they are in fact doing what they want to do.
You just like to stick the sell out sticker to Metallica because it's fashionable to do so among dickhead poser metalheads like you.
@ClosetTable Actually St Anger was incredibly formulaic and nu metal -y (i actually like nu metal but that's beside the point) and when they got criticism they tried to follow it up with the uninspired and unintresting death magnetic to try and make up for it. Besides their ridiculous ticket pricing over marketing and law suits they're a great band.
@ClosetTable it baffles me that any band doing something with Lou Read can possibly be considered selling out, he's one of the most non-commercial musicians in the business
@TheME666TAL Yeah, well Ed points it out really well in this video. It's a bandwagon, it's fashionable to label Metallica as sellouts among "true metalheads". For me they are just the true posers. Metallica has done a lot of songs and albums not caring a single shit what their "true" fans are going to say about it (for example ReLoad, Lulu, One). Metallica did four of some of the greatest thrash records ever, that's more than enough for one band. Changing sound is not selling out.
Far as the cards go, anyone who thinks promoting is selling out needs their head examined. Businesses promote, they need to in order to make money, in order to have customers.
I hadn't noticed this video of your's before, as I've mostly been watching your newer videos from the end of 2011 till now, but this one's title caught my eye. I agree with everything you're saying for the most part but I genuinely believe that some bands do actually, by Darkretrofan64's definition, do sell out. As a dedicated fan of Crytopsy, it was fairly upsetting to see the way that band went; with no original members and a new cast of hired guns. Flo Mounier took a shot at fame and missed.
And it's true that especially within underground music, an elitist culture does exist, and taints the rest of this good apple. These people don't want what they believe to be exclusive to them, to reach a greater audience, as it would take from their sense of selves. I want to see Rotten Sound on the American charts along side Justin Beiber one day, as more people need to hear good music in general. I stand firmly though that there is a difference between doing what you want and selling out.
why is it bad when a band wants to make some money i understand when they veer away what they usually play it may be frustrating but they need to make some cash too
If there are any Opeth fans watching, this applies for you too, Heritage was not a sell out, Akerfeldts musical interest has changed and that's just fine. Awesome Deivos shirt by the way, I own the same one ;P
@sixthseparatist Agreed. I'm actually okay with the direction they're going, sure I'm going to miss the old sound a lot but I'm still enjoying what they're doing now.
Amen. Don't like it? Don't buy it. It's that simple. There are far too many great albums to explore to waste any time or energy focusing on something you don't enjoy.
Hell yes. Everyone who calls a band "sell-outs" should watch this video before saying stupid comments like "Oh those guys are sell-outs, so they suck".
I hate when people go on about bands selling out. It's like when some guy I know was going on about how Machine Head sold out with their newest album because it's too different, I said I like it and plus it isn’t really, really different, and now he's really into it. That means he's the sell-out really not the band. I like a lot of types of music but metal is my favourite and I think it's good when bands vary their style a bit from album to album.
I completely agree. I can't stand when people get pissed when a band that's been aroun for 20 years or so changes their sound even a little bit. Seriously? I mean, did you really think they would stay the same forever and never experiment with new sounds or looks or styles? As long as they're still metal, then they haven't really gone mainstream, because as far as I can tell metal is far from mainstream.
In my opinion, it's cool if your band gets famous, makes money but is still making pretty decent music.......Although I have my maximum respect for bands who don't care about the money at all. True bands like Possessed, Tankard, Evildead, Nuclear Assault, Megadeth(once was,now is again). Really excellent bands. On the other hand, selling out is making the crappiest music possible just for the sake of more money. lol Lulu for example. What a load of shit! Illud Divinm wasn't that terrible tho.
@ElvisBluntman777 first off, lulu isn't even a metallica album.it's lou reeds work with metallica as the guest backing band.secondly, that was a project metallica went into knowing there would be plenty people that wouldn't like it.but they didn't care, they made the music they wanted to make.cliff burton said it best "we do what we wanna do,if someone considers that selling out then....whatever".
ahahah, I find it awsome that you are wearing a deivos shirt. It was the thing i was less expecting in the day ahahah. Also you should check a band called "Archspire" if you havent already, very technical, in all instruments, even vocals.
@XxMetalfan96xX In his other videos he says he dislikes and anything that has high vocals like Suicide Silence and he doesn't songs filled with shit loads of Breakdowns..........And he like low vocals in metal more than high vocals
@Infidelamsterdam no, i thought, try less to tell people not to mark certain bands as sold or mark people as "true" metalhead, not true etc.. and more focus on music, games, etc enjoyment. its nice that you try to make people tolerant but i think its just to much, who get it, get it, who dont, he probably will not ever...
@Zardikar5 don't like it then don't watch.it's not gonna stop infidel from make the vids he makes b/c there are many people who enjoy & agree with them.
@Zardikar5 Hey man, I have a cool little band from my hometown that I think that you would like. Their name is Armed For Apocalypse, and I recommend their song Fists Of God.
@De4dlyMet4lHe4d So... If i dont "believe" blindly in everything Infidel says, no matter i LIKE most of his vids but if i disagree only in ONE thing i deserve death ? You really put a smile on my face with your hate comment.
Go worship God you call InfidelAmsterdam, love ya too :-) have a nice day
@Zardikar5 On one hand I like your videos, but on the other hand I agree with Zardikar5. He did not insult you like a hater would do, he just stated his opinion. The comment section doesn't have to be filled with positive comments as long as the negative ones are decent :)
I think that if a band is playing music for the money rather than the love of music and belief in their music, then they have sold out. This may or may not include a change in sound. A change in sound doesn't necessarily constitute selling out at all.
To me selling out is not just doing it for the money, but changing the sound of your music, not because you want to, but to increase mass appeal. Metallica didn't change bacause they all wanted to, they did it because Bob Rock wanted them to, because he knew it would sell.
@AlucardFanboy8745 Ya but they fired bob rock and gained slayers producer and came out with death magnetic which isnt really that bad, there are a few good songs on it.
16:55 "Ferrum Aeternum" and 18:02 "Sword Chant". both by the Finnish folk metal band Ensiferum. My favorite band! Good taste in music you guys! Can't wait for their new album! :D
@OrangeCounty92 Every artist cares about making money. The point is if that their motive is MORE about money than for the heart of making music, then that is what I consider being a sell-out
@DeftonesFan95 Yes, but see the problem is that many people don't really understand that... there will be someone labeling a band a "sellout" just for the sake that it is popular, and not every famous well-known band is a sellout just because they're famous.
@FecklessCretin Nah being a sellout in that regard, totally compromising the integrity of the music for a quick buck is never cool. Its totally different to a band experimenting because they wanna try a new sound, totally different.
i wish i could be as down to earth as you man, i mean Metallica are my favourite band, i love everything; Kill em all, The Black Album, Load and even St. Anger. But you're so nice to everyone, it just seems like there should be more people like you.
In other words I say people who only do things because its a bandwagon or trend, that is selling out, same applies to bands in my opinion if they do something or a sound because its a trend or something to get with the times, not really being its own individual so to speak then that is selling out. To me its another definition.
I disagree with how and what some metal fans define as sellouts, I feel a band who sells out are bands who do a style that is not really innovative, not really moving forward, kind of goes with the flow in a commercial sort of sense, I like bands who try to blow fans away with their albums, try to really be creative instead of just being commercial. lol at someone saying sellout due to promotion, business promote to get customers, by that logic everyone is a sellout.
@patorr69 A style not really innovative? I would like to have more 80´s heavy metal bands instead of believers, I agree with you at some point, I don´t like bands that "sell out" not to innovate or to evolve but to just that, try to sell more CDs and do more money, obviously this is a market and if you want to do this for a living you have to sell CDs, but obviously you have to try to be faithfull to your style, try to evolve but don´t sell your soul, or music XD.
nice video. btw its all about ps3 fuck xbox!! they charge you to use your own internet haha. (im gonna feel kinda stupid if that was a black xbox controller though)
i agree with you Infidel about the 'selling out' thing; unfortunately many metalheads are a lot conservative in the way they approach to music, so they tend to say 'sellouts' to bands who changes their sound instead of just disliking; a perfect example of a great band that changed its sound in the years is Carcass: from pure grindcore to melodic death metal and death&roll....noone can say they sold out
@Infidelamsterdam As for deathcore bands becoming death metal, I think it is due to the negative view many metal fans have towards deathcore, i.e. Job For A Cowboy.
@Infidelamsterdam As for 'selling out', I think that is hard to do in metal, simply because most metal is not ideology-driven (with the exception of some bands, mostly NSBM and RABM bands), unlike punk and hardcore. Take Crass' song "Punk Is Dead" as an example.
i mainly think a band is a sellout when a band either puts of more items of merchandise then songs theyve made. or if a band changes their sound to pinpoint a specific audience for profit....their not doing it for music. but for money....idk i just feel music should be a great enough profit...and the currency should just be a spectacular bonus...but hey. not everyone agrees with me.
Same how people called Limp Bizkit, mainly FRED DURST a "sellout" back in the late 90's. They went from a raw-sound to a mellowed-out sound. They say they would only listen to their first album but not listen to their later albums. But me being open to all forms of heavy music I like all Limp Bizkit albums. I know I'm going to get a lot of hate responses for this but it's true. But then if a band keeps making the same record repeatedly then you know you'll get bored.
I'd still use the term selling out. It's not that they aren't doing what they used to, it's a matter of honesty. Does Metallica HONESTLY like that music? Because even if they do, we can't feel it. Opeth's new Heritage album is getting mixed opinions, but that is an HONEST record. Devin Townsend's DTP series is HONEST. St. Anger? I don't think it is, and most people don't feel the honesty. It feels like it's money motivated, thus selling out. That's why I didn't like Cryptopsy's new album.
I don't strictly agree, selling out is a real concept there's a big difference between selling out and changing the sound if a band starts following popular trends and the music loses the element of realism to it then it's a sell out so in that logic i do believe Metallica sold out but there are other bands like Judas Priest or Slayer or even as radical a change as Sentenced did and the change still feels very genuine.
although i agree that making cards is not selling out. Promotion is useful.
You need balls to send a video like that when you can barely speak english. I'm argentinian and I dont wanna record anything (even though I would actually like to) because I just dont feel confortable with the language.
I don't think it necessarily means that if a band goes in a different direction musically they really Want to do it truthfully all the time, but it really is impossible to know if a band really did sell out... And accusing them is lame. So calling bands sell-outs without actually knowing anything for sure is stupid.
There are too many ways to look at selling out, but usually what its referring to is when a band has a sound and once they get popular, change their sound to become more accesible to the public to make more money. You really cant blame them because whats more important to them? Tr00 f4ns? or money? And in some cases, band just change their sound because they want too, not because of some record label. Just listen to the albums you like from a band and stop complaining so much :P
I think if people had any idea how much bands actually make the term 'selling out' wouldn't be used. Unless you're going platinum or something and playing gigs to thousands every night you hardly earn enough to pay for fuel, food, hotels, all that shit to just play gigs. People have no idea how much work bands put in, and that it's not easy going at all.
selling out to me AND my band. is letting people change you.. thats it. making money is not selling out if the companies do not change you. just because a band changes does NOT mean they are 'selling out' they are just changing, how THEY want.
the funny thing about ppl saying that Cryptopsy sold out because they made a deathcore CD , is the fact that they technically did'nt sell out , Why? Cause Deathcore is not mainstream
The only artists/bands that sold out IMO, were Ozzy, ICP, and Kiss. It has nothing to do with music, but, in ICP & Kiss' case, merchandising, and, in Ozzy's case, shows on MTV, and NBC. I hate ICP, but they were a good example. I still have respect for Ozzy, and Kiss for the music they released in the past, but do we really need a Kiss refrigerator?......Is it really necessary?
@blasphemator Think of it like this; You are called John. John was a pilot, but now he is a teacher. His name is stil John, that is who he is.
Now with music. You and two friends are in a band called 'the Jizz Moppers'. At first you were playing Death Metal, but now you play Black Metal. Your bandname is still 'the Jizz Moppers', that is who you guys are.
People need to rethink their definition of selling out. In my book, selling out is doing something you don't want to do for money. So to me, working in a dead end job that you hate is selling out, because you're doing you don't want to do and you're getting paid for it. If Metallica wanted to change their sound but didn't because they were scared of how people would react or something, THAT would be selling out.

ElvisBluntman777 2 months ago
@ElvisBluntman777 first off, lulu isn't even a metallica album.it's lou reeds work with metallica as the guest backing band.secondly, that was a project metallica went into knowing there would be plenty people that wouldn't like it.but they didn't care, they made the music they wanted to make.cliff burton said it best "we do what we wanna do,if someone considers that selling out then....whatever".

I think that if a band is playing music for the money rather than the love of music and belief in their music, then they have sold out. This may or may not include a change in sound. A change in sound doesn't necessarily constitute selling out at all.
JWarnerMusic 2 months ago
To me selling out is not just doing it for the money, but changing the sound of your music, not because you want to, but to increase mass appeal. Metallica didn't change bacause they all wanted to, they did it because Bob Rock wanted them to, because he knew it would sell.
AlucardFanboy8745 2 months ago
@AlucardFanboy8745 Ya but they fired bob rock and gained slayers producer and came out with death magnetic which isnt really that bad, there are a few good songs on it.

ArchEnemySlayer 2 months ago
@DarkRetroFan64 What if they care about both........
OrangeCounty92 2 months ago
@OrangeCounty92 Every artist cares about making money. The point is if that their motive is MORE about money than for the heart of making music, then that is what I consider being a sell-out
DarkRetroFan64 2 months ago
@DarkRetroFan64 Most of the time, this is THE reason.
DeftonesFan95 1 month ago
@DeftonesFan95 Yes, but see the problem is that many people don't really understand that... there will be someone labeling a band a "sellout" just for the sake that it is popular, and not every famous well-known band is a sellout just because they're famous.
DarkRetroFan64 1 month ago
@DarkRetroFan64 Which they should really have the right to do.
FecklessCretin 1 month ago
@FecklessCretin Nah being a sellout in that regard, totally compromising the integrity of the music for a quick buck is never cool. Its totally different to a band experimenting because they wanna try a new sound, totally different.

In other words I say people who only do things because its a bandwagon or trend, that is selling out, same applies to bands in my opinion if they do something or a sound because its a trend or something to get with the times, not really being its own individual so to speak then that is selling out. To me its another definition.

I disagree with how and what some metal fans define as sellouts, I feel a band who sells out are bands who do a style that is not really innovative, not really moving forward, kind of goes with the flow in a commercial sort of sense, I like bands who try to blow fans away with their albums, try to really be creative instead of just being commercial. lol at someone saying sellout due to promotion, business promote to get customers, by that logic everyone is a sellout.
patorr69 4 months ago
@patorr69 A style not really innovative? I would like to have more 80´s heavy metal bands instead of believers, I agree with you at some point, I don´t like bands that "sell out" not to innovate or to evolve but to just that, try to sell more CDs and do more money, obviously this is a market and if you want to do this for a living you have to sell CDs, but obviously you have to try to be faithfull to your style, try to evolve but don´t sell your soul, or music XD.

i agree with you Infidel about the 'selling out' thing; unfortunately many metalheads are a lot conservative in the way they approach to music, so they tend to say 'sellouts' to bands who changes their sound instead of just disliking; a perfect example of a great band that changed its sound in the years is Carcass: from pure grindcore to melodic death metal and death&roll....noone can say they sold out

@Infidelamsterdam As for deathcore bands becoming death metal, I think it is due to the negative view many metal fans have towards deathcore, i.e. Job For A Cowboy.
misanthropyeternal 5 months ago
@Infidelamsterdam As for 'selling out', I think that is hard to do in metal, simply because most metal is not ideology-driven (with the exception of some bands, mostly NSBM and RABM bands), unlike punk and hardcore. Take Crass' song "Punk Is Dead" as an example.

chrisbodom666 5 months ago
i mainly think a band is a sellout when a band either puts of more items of merchandise then songs theyve made. or if a band changes their sound to pinpoint a specific audience for profit....their not doing it for music. but for money....idk i just feel music should be a great enough profit...and the currency should just be a spectacular bonus...but hey. not everyone agrees with me.
Soulabliteration 5 months ago
Same how people called Limp Bizkit, mainly FRED DURST a "sellout" back in the late 90's. They went from a raw-sound to a mellowed-out sound. They say they would only listen to their first album but not listen to their later albums. But me being open to all forms of heavy music I like all Limp Bizkit albums. I know I'm going to get a lot of hate responses for this but it's true. But then if a band keeps making the same record repeatedly then you know you'll get bored.
MrBreedhate 5 months ago
I'd still use the term selling out. It's not that they aren't doing what they used to, it's a matter of honesty. Does Metallica HONESTLY like that music? Because even if they do, we can't feel it. Opeth's new Heritage album is getting mixed opinions, but that is an HONEST record. Devin Townsend's DTP series is HONEST. St. Anger? I don't think it is, and most people don't feel the honesty. It feels like it's money motivated, thus selling out. That's why I didn't like Cryptopsy's new album.
Bassbait 5 months ago
I don't strictly agree, selling out is a real concept there's a big difference between selling out and changing the sound if a band starts following popular trends and the music loses the element of realism to it then it's a sell out so in that logic i do believe Metallica sold out but there are other bands like Judas Priest or Slayer or even as radical a change as Sentenced did and the change still feels very genuine.
although i agree that making cards is not selling out. Promotion is useful.

shadezofblack69 5 months ago
I don't think it necessarily means that if a band goes in a different direction musically they really Want to do it truthfully all the time, but it really is impossible to know if a band really did sell out... And accusing them is lame. So calling bands sell-outs without actually knowing anything for sure is stupid.
MetalizedButt 5 months ago
Infidelamsterdam dude do you listen Cannibal Corpse?
Kreitos432 6 months ago

People have no idea how much work bands put in, and that it's not easy going at all.

sso basicly he is making music he doesnt enjoy for money and fame
also whut about 30 seonds to mars, their promise was that they would stay rock and help the genre get fame but now they sing pop
thats selling out

The only artists/bands that sold out IMO, were Ozzy, ICP, and Kiss. It has nothing to do with music, but, in ICP & Kiss' case, merchandising, and, in Ozzy's case, shows on MTV, and NBC. I hate ICP, but they were a good example. I still have respect for Ozzy, and Kiss for the music they released in the past, but do we really need a Kiss refrigerator?......Is it really necessary?

People need to rethink their definition of selling out. In my book, selling out is doing something you don't want to do for money. So to me, working in a dead end job that you hate is selling out, because you're doing you don't want to do and you're getting paid for it. If Metallica wanted to change their sound but didn't because they were scared of how people would react or something, THAT would be selling out.
