As a MJ and MJ Plus user, all Mac owners should be aware of a related MJ suspicious file. The file is mj_dev and on a quad core i7 MBP is using 9% average CPU time. That amount of CPU usage is way to high for the operation of this unit, and one must question what MagicJack is doing with this file.
@10p6 thanks for this info - i checked mine (ACTIVITY MONITOR under Utilities guys) - and it was using closer to 13% CPU when I looked at it. Anyone who knows what the deal is with this please share.
I have the service and like it and can't really complain about it, but if I could and wanted to, I would certainly suggest to get rid of all the advertising before, during and after the voice mail.
@johnsampson03 that's weird... i haven't experienced any advertising before during or after vm on either of my magic jacks, nor has anyone else mentioned hearing any advertising when calling me.
@followyourbliss101 yes it is and the only issue I have with it, so if you call my magic number and I don't answer the message is something like, the Magic jack customer is not able to take your call, so please leave the magic jack customer a message, if you would like a magic jack and know how to get free calls go to this website etc....something like that
@johnsampson03 hmm.... wonder why they're doing that? I think they've done a pretty good job of marketing already - i mean, just how many more units do they need to sell? Personally, I think they've sold enough already and should work on improving the tech side of things - that's my issue with this ogreedy mindset of capitalism that so many people/companies get.
TIP for the day aka, DonT Do This - if you own more than one magic jack, don't try running them both off the same computer at the same time (trying to have 2 lines)... it messed up one of mine where it no longer recognizes one of them @ my home cable modem line
I tried this device and my computer started having serious problems. Finally got fed up with it and took about a month to work out how it screwed up my Windows and my DSL.
Also, if my computer wasn't working prooperly I realized I'd be without phone access. Kind of a Catch-22.
this product is already saving people a ton of money.....and th eproduct is continually being improved.....CALL is the stock ticker....and the company is returning value to the customer
Renewal is $39.95 per year not $19.95. The initial advertising is very misleading which I find unethical. The device works well so if you don't mind being lied to than this device is for you. For myself, I don't do business with liars.
@ZeroCrossings777 you are mistaken... magic jack offers a $69.95 deal for 5 years or 19.95 for one year renewal. $39.95 is what a new jack plus 1 year of service included costs. But of course anybody who has a magic jack already knows this.
@ealkass .I have seen it working from mexico.Buy there, registered there, get your area code; take it to anywhere and try it if it works. It works in mexico. It uses the internet what's the problem? can somebody explain it.
Majic Jack is a fraud. They advertise free calling and its NOT FREE. Read thier terms before you purchase this useless low quality device (SECTION 6 in their terms). My internet speed is 15 megabits/sec yet the voice keeps cutting. They have the WORST customer and techincal support. STAY AWAY! They suspended my account and its irreversible I lost $60 a week after I activated the device :reason: They calim that i made more then 20% calls than the average cutomer. Filing FTC and BBB today.
some times it takes about 1 second for the other person to hear you..... thats anoying to me ive had it for 2 years now but like i said with some of my friends it just does that an with others doesent.......just luck I gues.....
yes - but last i checked, you can only select US based phone numbers (area codes) . . . so if you want to make calls to the US and have people in the US call you for free, that'll work...
otherwise I think they charge for international calls - for example, if I was in the UK, and wanted to call you on your cell phone registered in Holland, it would cost me.
not sure - depends on what you mean by long distance - - within the usa it shouldn't be an issue - if you're trying to call overseas or mexico/canada (not sure on canada) you need to buy minutes... - i'm not with MJ - just made a video here... check with their online support - contrary to what other people say, they ARE helpful if you aren't obnoxious to them.
I picked my local area code prefix and I have to dial the area code everytime even out to local calls. Glad that wasn't just me(or is it?) Stil, its a small annoyance for a lifetime of savings! Majic jack>big phone companies!
i think that has to do with the way MJ works - not sure it can detect where it is based on an ip address compared to the area code you're in - thus having to dial the 10 digits no matter what
I am using MagicJack without problems on my MacPro Dual + on a new MacBook. The only compatibility issue I have is that it will NOT work while Little Snitch is running. It does not matter how you tinker with LS and tell it that MagicJack is OK. So long as Little snitch is running, MagicJack will not.
I'm not sure if it is compatible but I would love to hook it up to a server. I can have access to a gaming server that runs video games but it also offers a voice service. So via some game server thats on 24/7 you add the magicjack you could have it on all day and night and use it for teamchat during a video game. From what I've seen it might not be compatible with windows servers yet. I've seen however it worked with some wireless services. Wish it worked with a pc tablet.
Why does Magicjack display the caller ID on the softphone but not on the telephone. It only shows "incoming Call". I'm using a Mac, and I did a research on some forums about this topic, and all of them affirm that the company doesn't support caller ID on Mac OS X "yet". Well, MagicJack say "we support Mac"? but they don't mention this to the public. PS; All of the rest work just fine.
hmm. . . i think when they said we support mac - they just meant that it'd work on a mac... i'm on a mac, but the phone i have hooked up doesn't have caller id on it so i wasn't aware of this shortcoming... i'm sure they'll eventually add it.
I experienced a lot of breaking up with Magic Jack and the sound quality was terrible! There are so many other FREE VoIP services out there, with customer support. We got free unlimited calls to US & Canada for our business with fastmetrics managed voip.
The important thing was, the quality of sound was great and they have 24/7 tech support, if needed.
i don't know how you got so lucky for it to work. iam on xp with cabe. all it does is freeze up my pc. and live support sucks cant never get through. i read support stuff and did what it said. no luck.
well, i'm not sure what their failure rate is, but you know the saying (is so true)... one unhappy customer tells everyone, satisfied customers tell next to no one.... the quiet majority.
I also don't use mine very often - but whenever I do, it almost always works fine.... i noticed it had done some sort of interface upgrade about a month or two ago without my doing anything on my end. It included a previous call list on the window and programmable contact list.
I got mine about a month ago at RadioShack (highly recommended) for $29. I didn't get to use it extensively 'til tonight and I love it. It's not perfect, but not bad at all.
I can't see why others are having so many problems.
it should work - but they are only giving out US and Canada exchanges - so if you have a use for a US or canada phone number, it might be something to consider. - the idea is that you can be anywhere in the world with a high speed connection and be able to make and receive calls for free to and from the us and canada - if you are calling elsewhere i don't know.
LOL - ok, uh, thanks I guess. When I grew it I felt it was time for a change and I hadn't seen anyone with this particular style - until just recently - maybe I started a trend, I dunno... I actually just shaved it all off the other week.
I Just want let you know i had my Mustach Grown like yours but i have them Shaved but i'm going to let them grow back , and you look like easy to put on Scare Tactics :)
interesting - - yeah, it works great on my mac osx (laptop) hooked up to cable modem. I do use that extension cable that comes with magic jack - too bad it doesn't work on a usb hub (i haven't tried it, but they say it won't work)
I bought two and there are many issues. one of which you can not even make outgoing calls from. there is no service number on the website or anywhere else. it's just a piece of crap sold on infomercials just like the chia pet!...
that does suck - have you tried their online help/live help? I imagine they can't afford a live call center right now since they aren't charging for service (yet).
I can only speak from my personal experience. I've had fairly reliable service with mine - occasionally I'll have to redial a number that gets a bad connection the first time -
- but that's typical with VoiceIP phone connections - same thing happens with Skype at times.
I have a PC with a UPS and my WIFI router is on UPS. I always kept my PC on anyway. My Voip Cox phone has back ups too. So it's no differant. It works great. $20 bucks a years
the magicjack is a peace of shit i had one i couldn't even get my own area code, an the voicemail don't even work i had it a mouth an my voicemail still didn't work an after 3weeks it had broke so i had send it back
Hey everyone, i've had mine for little over two weeks now. I find that it does exactly as advertised. To be more specific, its reliability matches that of a cell phone. The audio chops whenever your router is busy or just whenever data packet traffic is being handled locally or somewhere down the line. That's on par with the cell phone which are subject to radio reception issues and packet traffic at their servers.
i believe so - although i think they only have area codes/numbers that are us/canada exchanges.
If you are wanting to call locally in the uk, Im not sure about calling rates. Part of the appeal of the magic jack is being able to travel anywhere in the world and so long as there's high speed internet access, the magic jack is good to go.
Jamen tillykke til MagicJack.

the bad part about the magic jack is that you have to have your computer on all the time because otherewise your internet connection wont be active

yeah, that is a drawback . . . not so much if you have a desktop - mine stays on 24/7,
