Looking back over the 40 odd years since the musical renaissance that began in Britain and in large part centered around the Canterbury scene and endured for almost a decade, it really does beg the question what the hell ever happened to music? when compared to the mindless shyte of today. Soft Machine and the genius of Allan Holdsworth would not see the mastery of their art even closely emulated for at least another 20 years.
Hey man, renaissances come and go. Look at the general history of humanity - before the 15th century we had the Dark ages (not so dark by the way). Life is a cycle. Without dark, there's no light - without the crappy music we couldn't have AH.
He most likely is a genius, but I feel sure he'd blanch if shown this vid today. Nonetheless, I find him a startling improviser, an endless fountain of correct notes. In this incarnation he seems to be playing in a more arpeggiated way, maybe closer to his early Coltrane influence of playing every note implied by a chord. Brill.
@251dog I absolutely agree!!!!!

This band, especially Holdsworth brought a badly needed breath of fresh air to the jazz genre. Being creative instead of just playing bebop cliches.

@AndreNieri This drummer is a little paler than Tony Williams-the man was African-American.

Clearly the MAN was a genius 40 years ago, and will go down as one of the greatest guitarists & musicians ever to walk the earth.
