Well to those who criticize, dislike, have wish lists of who Jack should play with, and basically have nothing good to say. It is very good music! Drugs! A part of that era. Oh wait they are even a bigger problem today. Good writing and performing. Where were you all then(some unborn) Ha, where are you now! Maybe some of you should listen. Whats out there today in music? A whole lot of crap. Funny they left out the C in Rap. But all of it today is garbage. Very few stand out. Enough said! Period
Best Bruce/Brown song ever imo. Writing 'uninspired',huh? Great chord progs and melody + pictorial lyrics. Jack looks more ill than stoned here and ducks a few high notes and plays a bum note around 4:44 but he's together enough to cringe & recover. Spare a thought for pianist Ronnie Leahy, you can hear him but the TV crew seem more interested in Carla Bley! Saw this band live at the FTH Manchester FTH in '75 & halfway through one song half the drum kit fell off the riser but they played on!
very progressive....... the sort of thing pink floyd were doing early on, but with a jazz tinge..... whats the official name of this band? The Jack Bruce Band?
"drug-addled?" obviously. writing wasn't "inspired?" side 1 of out of the storm was some of the most inspired & poignant writing jack & pete brown ever did. it just happened to be inspired from a very dark place. sorry they couldn't write you a "mandy," or any other of the drivel that passed for music at the time...
Definitely good music and in the jazz format. I say thank God this happened because the music sounds timeless to me. I'm a guitarist and love to listen 2 Cream and Rolling Stones. All music should have something to offer, if the artist were trying 2 make something worthwhile. This music is 2 me.
It would have been nice if Taylor would have waited for the applause to finish before blurting out "Jack Bruce, bass". I don't think the audience caught that part.
Was Jack Bruce an item with Carla Bley at the time? Well, only his knob knows for certain. However, at that time, one thing that Jack thought he did know for certain was that if he were to form a band with Carla Bley and Mick Taylor, that band would be no doubt be stupendously magical. Of course, what actually happened (as is evident in this video), is that whilst they did indeed form a band, they nevertheless forgot to write songs that were even remotely inspired. Quel Dommage!
I agree, this band had such great potential. It is very apparent here that they are all excellent musicians. They just didn't get the writing part down.
"They just didn't get the writing down"? Well, your kind assessment aside, the fact of the matter is that the decision of Bruce and Taylor to form this band simply reflects the blinkered state of their drug-addled minds at that point. For the fact of the matter is that anyone [who wasn't using drugs at that time] could have told them that, irrespective of their fame and talent, they simply didn't have any tunes that were even remotely inspired, much less commercially viable.
I had heard that this song was written about Jack's trying to kick horse. Don't know if it's true or no. I surely wish that this band had survived. Thanks again, Micktaylor49. I wish I knew the order of performances here. That piano goes way out of tune on Without a Word . . . I think it's a Wurlitzer. I wondered if the solder got too hot or something as the evening went on. Maybe my ears are just shot.
Thanks much, DDInDaHouse187. I'll have to listen to the piano on Smiles and Grins . . . that should either confirm or shoot my theory all to bits. Quite a moniker, incidentally!

@scurpenin Ya I know. But Eric was nowhere in sight in this video. Jack Bruce is still vitally important in the pantheon of rock gods.

I saw this on the TV when first broadcast.
Jack had to be led onto the stage before Can You Follow as he was so stoned.
Hence the sweat and throat.
Can You Follow was a mess - but the show got better as he played on.
It was broadcast on a Friday night and I saw them live the following Sunday at Crystal Palace.

Do you need to take another few "tokes" to finish this?

Has Jack got a touch of the flu?
It is unusual to see him perspire and to hear him clear his throat. Great anyway.
Seeing Jack at the mike, and the keyboarder in the backround was a scene that I liked.
