@natesmom2244 - thanks for commenting. We installed the cabinets within 2.5" of the ceiling and filled in that space with some extra kick-boards which I had to rip and then scribe to match the uneven distance. The cabinets shouldn't be installed flush to the ceiling - that would be weird. I think the way we did it was okay.
@emmarosemc - I took a 2-week vacation and was able to do 90% of the work. Building the Ikea cabinets is trivial - there really isn't much that has to be done other than assemble them with the supplied hardware. Installing them is a bigger challenge - but do-able if you have DIY skills.
@dh0well is better to have a custom cabinet maker to built and install your kitchen cabinets, Just tell him tha you like IKEA style and they will do by even cheaper price and better quality
Thanks for posting this. We are looking into remodeling our kitchen. Despite what the other posts, say, I have several quotes from "professionals" that are 2-3X the cost! I don't mind doing the work myself if it takes a few extra days. This will help! THanks again.
@sweetdeztinee - good luck with your kitchen. Be sure to use the Ikea kitchen planning tool and they have Q&A sessions at the Ikea stores that helped us.
@markjtapply : umm, sure - I could have had a pro do this, but I -wanted- to do this, I -enjoyed- doing this. It is infinitely more rewarding having done it myself than I ever could have known had I just remained a helpless, do-nothing, bystander while someone else did the things that need doing in my life. Yeah, it took time, some of it was hard, dirty, there were problems to solve, and it is not absolutely perfect, but I cannot let that stop me from trying. That's how you learn and grow.
Doesn't matter if it is the small guy or the big company - the end result (budget and finish) is what is important. Just had some "small guys" do our kitchen - absolute nightmare. Always check references and previous work no matter who you go with.
Hatas gonna hate. Dude, thanks for posting this, and responding to questions. Getting excited for the new Ikea coming to Denver! Can't wait to get rid of our franken-kitchen job from the last owner of the house!
Hey @cdeville, good luck getting your kitchen refinished. If you are half as happy as we were doing ours, you will be ecstatic with yours. Yes, I know custom cabinets are superior to these, but our Ikea cabinets are suitable for our modest home. A neighbor has the same style house as ours with custom kitchen cabinets and they are overwhelming and out of place.
FYI: You are required by fire code to have 30 inches minimum from the stove-top (66 inches from floor) to bottom of cabinet above the stove. The cabinet over the stove in this video looks a little lower than that.
If you ever want to install a microwave/hood combination (microhood), you should have 34" (70" from floor).
if you are looking for good quality cabinets, dont go to the big factories people. The custom cabinet maker with 2 or 3 guys is your best buy. You will get better service better finish and better quality in every way. It will also help your local community trades people not to be shut down by these big factories yhat dont have aney soul. :)
@ilovemaddty - "help your local community trades people not [the] big factories" -- this is an excellent point. When we were looking for cabinets, price was a major consideration. We never checked the 2-3 guys cabinet places - figured it would be too expen$ive. In retrospect, I would not do that again without seeing what they have to offer.
@lotwyo all im saying is that there is better ways!!!! and im only 32, ill still be building cabinets in ten years so i will get the chance to rip thim out and install some that will last for years and years and years! and for the same money mate!!!
I'm not one of the people who posted the video, just an interested observer. You may be out of luck getting the color & door style in Oz, according to the IKEA Australia website. I'm in Calgary CANADA, where that style & color is available.
Yes, I've actually just been looking on the IKEA website here and it doesn't seem to be available. I'm so disappointed because I really do love it and I can't even seem to find anything similar. I might have to look in store and see what they have. Thanks for your help :)
Hi, I posted the video. Solodiver007 is right, the color is Adel Medium Brown. I bought them in a store in the U.S. It was a surprise to me that the styles vary from country to country. Guess I never thought about it - they must study what people in different countries prefer.
Yeah it really sucks because I do really love the colour. I thought that they must have done studies too. I must have different taste to everybody else in Australia. I ended up going with nexus brown which is ok. Haven't installed it yet so fingers crossed all goes well. I do really like your kitchen and I loved the way that you did the video :)
was it a older home u bught? i am geting a habatat for humity home, but realy hate the dark wood, i LOVE IKEA, as soon as i can affored it, im riping out the cabnets and geting ikea...did u put them in your self?
It (the house) is not too old - a handful of decades. Yes, we did all the did all (except for hiring an electrician to do the outlets) the work - drywall, replace insulation, replace the flooring, dishwasher hookup, and the cabinets.
Interesting. We're planning to remodel our kitchen this fall. We looked at those same cabinets and will have an almost identical layout. We plan to install legs instead of the kickboard. We like the function of the Ikea cabinets, especially the drawers. The 25 year warranty is impressive too. How do you like them one year later?
Our satisfaction level with these cabinets is exactly the same as the day we finished installing them. Couldn't be happier. They are perfect for us. Have encountered zero problems with them in the last 2.5 years. Good luck with yours!
I'm planning a kitchen remodel as well...How is the quality on your cabinets? Do they feel like particle board or are they solid feeling. Do the doors close with a thud or with a hollow sound? Not sure how else to describe what I'm looking for. Thanks for the video
The cabinet doors have a good quality feel to them. The cabinets come with door dampers which cause them to gently shut. The drawers have a similar feature too.
I do woodworking and can appreciate that there is a quality difference between these and real wood custom doors, but, frankly, it is not something I notice in our day-to-day use of these cabinets.
Those have to be the ugliest cabinets I ever saw. I had never heard of IKEA cabinets before and did some research after watching this video. IKEA is particle board crap! Good luck with that junk!

Ikea SUCKS.
My cabinets are all hand painted, with gold gilding, distressing and antique hardware. What's more my kitchen features REAL 18th century beams, with new hand carved restorations, wine rack, lattice work appliance fronts, antique hand painted free standing glass cabinet, french doors walking out to patio and a 3 panel Anderson overlooking the Berkshire Mountains.
It's not finished yet, but I did all that work for under a grand.
And you're modest, too! Why would someone with your status and awesome kitchen be watching this video, anyway? Shouldn't you be taking a walk in the Berkshire's or something?
No, today I'm too busy building a trellis to frame one side of the patio.
I'm building a 2' high planter at the base in stone and I'm going to run kiwi vines from there up the trellis. They're supposedly one of the fastest growing vines and they produce fruit!!
And your cabinets cost 10x more than IKEA cabinets and offer the same functionality.
For those of us who want to spend less for more - IKEA is a fantastic choice.
..For you, you can go ahead and put in your REAL 18th century beams as I'm sure everyone who will see your kitchen will care how old your wood is. You sure impressed everyone here on this comment thread - actually no, you just convinced everyone that you're a douche.
I've done one and a half kitchens with ikea cabinets. You can't beat the price for cabinets that look ALMOST custom made. Worst part is leveling and getting the plinths (toekicks) right. Amazing how many different sizes and door styles they have.
