Why would you keep your car parked in the street during the winter anyway. That's why they invented driveways. Over where I live if there is 2 or more inches of snow then there is a parking ban and if you park in the street you get fined.

First off, its always better to have a manual transmission, but stop and think about that statement for longer than 5 seconds. The engine is A, not going to stop you, and B, if you're geared super low (as in low range type stuff) you're just going to lock. Besides, you should never use your engine to slow down. Control speed, yes, but slow down, no.

True, that makes sense but iv always found it easyer to stop by first down shifting first especially on a slippery road than not. You can do it on an automatic but you might brake something that happend to my moms car once

On a truly slippery surface, you should be modulating brakes (Personally, my car has no abs, but on a super slick surface like a sheet of ice, the ABS system is just going to freak out and not do anything) with the clutch in because, as I've found out the hard way a few times (fortunately, with no adverse effects) once you lock, the transmission will actually hold the drive wheels locked. This effect is only increased by having the car in a lower gear.

Obviously you have never driven a modern car with abs brakes. I live in northern Finland, and we have all kind of conditions here, including icy. And I can tell you that abs is the best alternative for all surfaces.

I have in fact driven several new cars on icy roads (as in the roads were a sheet of ice) for the record. I think what we have here is a failure to communicate. 99% (or more) of the time ABS is great and does only good, but if the ABS computer cant find any traction believe me, the're going to just give up, because if there is no traction, how can they find any. Even in that situation where you are going to be modulating your brakes, when a wheel or two does find traction, the ABS will send

Salt Truck driver can drive pretty damn good, he kept trying to stop further up the hill and couldn't, so he rode it out, on the edge the whole way. I had something similar happen with a concrete truck a couple years back... If i hadn't raised the bridgemaster when i started sliding, the rear end would have steered the truck.

Even more idiot is who suggests an AWD would prevent this. AWD is great to get the car going, since you have an extra set of wheels spinning, but it does nothing when its time to brake, since both a 4WD and a FWD or RWD brake with all four wheels!
