Tenochtitlán (Mexico City) was builted in an island, the disaster of this escape and the major casualties of the spaniards was when they were crossing the bridge. it was 8 steps wide and sectioned. In the night the mexicas lifted the wood sections for security. Cortés ordered to cover again those sections with strong wood bridges. When they were escaping, an indian woman saw that and she alerted the mexicas. In the rush many horses fall down from the bridge and died drowned.
@Legolasas26 We are filled with indians to the ass !! There is people of spanish ancestry but it is not the majority i´m afraid only 10% of the 110 million people we are. And the damn indiscriminate "mestizaje" (intermixing) created a new race of halfbreeds that is the face of México.
like I said,.. what this game is missing is "Great Tenochtitlan" on the lake...
The city should have been in the middle of the lake, huge, and with the giant Temple Major pyramid.. only a few bridges out... maybe some boats on the lake...and of couse SACRIFICE..!! Priests on top of the pyramids, and red blood flowing down the stairs..
@Anton1941 Jeez, Aztecs were the first to invent heart transplant, and some spanish saw the whole process in an aztec hospital and couldnt understand wtf is going on, so he wrote down that they were sacrificing people.
Ive read some passages written by bernal diaz del castillo, most of the things he wrote are correct but there are other that enter in disagreement with other writers who were also present in the conquista
Aye thanks for the book name, ill add it to my library, i would have added the lake texcoco but the game didnt let me unless i made my own map and i didnt had much time, also i would have been able to put any kind of ship or boat... anyway thanks
in the battle for otumba valley, over 20,000 aztecs were killed..
Overall, the aztec army may have numbered more then 100,000 ..
The spanish were about 1000 man more or less, but they had native allies... the Tlaxcalans provided them with tens of thousands of troops.. They used european combat tactics and entircled tenochtitland and starved it out
well not only tlaxcalans at the end most of the aztec allies turned against them the total spanish army was about two hundred thousand of indigenous allies and at most 1000 spaniards, while the aztecs were weakened by smallpox and most of their elite warriors killed at the massacre in the main temple
Oh I get it. I meant in ambushing the "King" of the Indegenous Emprires. By capturing them. I don't know why I put up Moctezuma instead of king. Cotes ambushed Moctezuma and siezed him, just like Pizarro did to Atahualpa.
Cortez didnt ambushed Moctezuma in Otumba actually Moctezuma the II was already dead when that battle happened, there are many versions of Moctezuma`s death but one thing is for sure he got killed in La noche triste and aye both atahualpa and moctezuma were made prisoners.
Also cortes never ambushe moctezuma not in battle nowhere, only thing he did was gettign in his palace with him and chained him with no protest from him apparently
Argh? That's not what I meant, didn't I tell you they were independent points. I'm NOT talking about Moctezuma and Atahualpa, when it pertains to the Battle of Otumba. The point mention about Battle of Otumba was a completely different matter.
The OTHER/SECOND point was about Pizarro learning to capture the King, and "metaphoricly" killing the snake, by cutting the head. Even though they did kill a bunch of (unarmed) civilians in the Inca Conquest.
It was a trial and error in figuring out how to combat the Horses, unfortunately for the Aztecs their forces were depleted by disease when Cortez came back. It was in the Battle of Otumba that they figured out how to decapitate the legs of a horse rendering it useless by prefect timing and precision as the charge came on.= \
No, it was the Calvalry that won them the day, not the flower war technice. The Spaniards pinpointed the Leader an charged him, literaly killing the morale of the Aztec soldiers as they decided to rout.
I know what im talking about, i do know about the santiago charge that was advised by the malinche to cortes but the whole battle would have been different if the aztecs wouldnt have tried to take them prisioners but kill them
I recon none of you guys are mexicans like me so i will take you a bit about the conquista, although my videos dont have as much details like i would have wanted i do know a lot of this history firt ofall there werent 300 spaniards but around 600, then i recognize that if any other man had lead the conquest it would have failed cortes was a genius maybe pedro de alvarado could have handled it, a
anyway main factos of aztecs defeat: disease, interal political/religious instability, aztecs numerous enemies, flower wars.... if anyone here knows why the flower wars are a main reason without looking for it on internet or ina book or wahtever source, then ill take seriously your opinion....
The main reason we lost were the flower wars the other ones you mention are secondary but as well important, my point is that if you dont know about flower wars then you dont know waht you´re talking about, like you...
bs!! You can't sit here a say losing 3/4 of your people is a SECONDARY reason for the Aztec's defeat. In the VERY beginnig yes, the aztec's were amazed that they actually tried to kill them instead of capturing, but its avident that they QUICKLY adapted/reform their strategies to this kind of warfare, and provided the Spanish forces with fierce resistance.
Lol spanish technology was overated but eggsandwich your completely bias, your always on about how it was disease and the native allies that beat the aztecs and not the spanish when they were just as important
I agree that they were important, as far as the whole conquest is concerned. However, I still hold my positon about the "third" role played by the Spaniards, in the Aztec defeat. Which is why Conquistador is a gross oversimplification of the real role they assumed. They mainly butchered unamerd civilians throughout the Campaigns, without proper battle sequence. Look how they vanquished the Inca's, no that's slaughter. They were not fighting soldiers, but civilizans.
yeh they were a third role in the aztec defeat but i think that was what hernan cortez wanted seeing as he wanted to conquer the whole of the new world :P Divide and conquer, i think if you talk about the whole conquest Hernan cortez and the spanish probaily played the most important role seeing as the other roles (exept disease) were his planning
Good point. However, after the fall of the Aztecs, there were (several major allied groups,) no one in particular were able to take power, from the power vacuum that arised after the Aztec defeat. Eventually Cortes also benefitted from that, aswell. Also slaughtering "Civilians" throughout the Conquest is hardly worth calling someone a Conquistador. The killed more Civilians than actual soldiers, that's a fact you can't refute.
Yes i know, and i know the spanish were alot worse than the aztecs :P unfortunatly not alot of people see that but i just think that cortes really the main reason because if it was someone else they probaily would of failed :S
Many of the so-called Conquistadores learned of the method of Cortes defeated the Aztecs. Pizarro used the exact method (which he read in Cortes personal memoirs) in ambushing the Moctezuma. Used it in the Inca Conquest, aswell. However the Maya proved to be a far more renderous obstacle, sine they weren't ruled by one central authority. It took the Spaniards 150 yrs. to subjucate them, and they never truly did defeat them, per se.'
Charge the moctezuma? the aztecs only had 2 moctezuas, moctezuma is nothing but a name, besides they didnt called them moctezuma but tlatoanis.... tlatoani=emperor, still in otumba the spaniards didnt charged at the tlatoani or emperor but at the standard carrier a very ornamented warrior who carried the standard....... the Santiago charge i remember it....
Charge Moctezuma? What?! I never said such a thing, my two previous comments are completely independent points. One was for you the other for the other guy.
Ill give you that the only formal battle they had between soldiers and soldiers was otumba, if only moctezuma the II hadnt been weak and have had the guts to rise an army against the supposed god (Quetzalcoatl), the real aztec armies would have destroyed them even with their capturing tactics....
Cortez was the one who defeated the Aztecs not the spaniards, still if it hadnt been for many facots like disease, aztecs tactics, luck in many occasions, religious and political problems amongst the aztecs;
Cortez as genius as he could have been, wouldnt have been able to carry out the conquista
Otumba was the descisive battle where the Aztecs lost there were 40 000 aztecs against
5 000 tlaxcaltecas and spaniards they lost mainly because of their way of fighting, they didnt went for killing they tried to only knock their enemies so they could take them to the sacrifacial chaber, while the spaniards and tlaxcaltecas fought for the kill nothing else.......
the aztecs never rised a real army against the spanish due to the belief of moctezuma the II of them being god or emissaries of quetzalcoatl... maybe if another tlatoani had been in the power it would have been different moctezuma even got chained by the aztecs and he did nothing....
The guns weren't reliable anyway. Especially in the humid climate. The only thing I see that truly was on their side were canons and calvary. The armor is overrated aswell. The Aztec had a weapon that could pierce throught the Armor..the Atlatl. Plus the Aztec sword by written account by Spanish Soldiers could decapitate a horse with one blow! It was DISEASE and allies. The Spanish played the third role in the Aztec defeat.
Not necessarily, all wars may not be fair, but credit and honr goes for the deserving. Disease alone devastated 60+%. BTW 300 Spaniards didn't win the day on their own they had indegenous allies arounf 70,000+ to help them. This isn't Leonidas and the 300Spartans, and even they had help. Disease played a HUGE role. Yet, the Spamiards still struggled with the Aztec, and NEVER really defeated the Maya! Something to think about, if disease wasn't an issue.
300 men conquered the whole continent? and they deserve merit? come on...diseases conquered the continent as well as other factors. their dirty diseases deserve the merit.
it's just not fair the aztecs where such a mighty empire if not for the guns ,cannons and the ilnisses i would bet that the spanish would not have stood a chance against these guys
warhogbeast...you are so right. the diseases played a huge role as well as the guns. the spaniards had luck on their side becuase the aztecs had no immunity to their dirty diseases and to gun fire!
Great video! Didn't like the choice of song for the actual fight scene (though I like Nightwish) but it was a great representation and the bits at the beginning with the big crowds and the raining streets were incredible!
well it is a sad night for the spanish but for mexicans its a joyfull night, its not like we are on the aztecs side but since we had to independize from spain we obviously are against the spaniards (spaniard rule deny)
to say that they were destroyed for no reason is just wrong. the spanish conquest over the aztecs is a complex story with a fair amount of evil on both sides
yeah well most of the times the bad guy is considered the one who invades the other guys territory but once again we cant put goodies and baddies in wars cause there arent
so because he wasn't as evil as some others he wasn't evil in ur book? he killed thousands in he stupid quest for glory and wealth. at an aztec festival he and his men massacred over 5000 aztecs in the most brutal ways just to take the gold they were wearing and then sacked the great temple! that is why the noche triste happened, i think it was justified even if those tow thing didn't happen cuz of all the other evil things the spaniards did to them! the aztecs did the cruel things that they did
yeah well many cultures have unusual terrifying rituals offer whatever the real thing is that we dont have a guide to know whats good or bad but our religious education and its going to differ from each person to each
the massacre during the aztec festival was carried out by Pedro De Alvarado against Cortez's specific instructions while he was fighting Narvaez on the coast. Cortez was not an evil man, sure he did some bad things but he should be remembered for more than that. He should be remembered for being a brilliant general. A brave man, who through a great gamble and heroism carried out one of the most amazing acts in history
thousands of aztecs died in the siege of tenochtitlan. and he was too evil! he had an aztec emperor tortured so that he could have his "treasure". if that isn't evil, i dont know what is. his "amazing act" destroyed aztecs culture. because of him, the natives were forced to learn christianity, the plague was introduced, and thousands died of malnourishment because he limited their diets to so called non pagan foods. he and his men massacred the aztecs on many occasions, and he only caused pain
I'm not suggesting he was saint and i'll be the first to admit that he did some very bad things but how can you deny Cortez's brilliance? he was a masterful general and tactition
well they were medieval people what could you expect they thought they were doing good or maybe they wanted to think so by using good, anyways we must see cortes as a human like us so we can understand him better, and yes it was a shame such an amazing culture like the aztecs vanished still the aztecs also had their evil side thousands of sacrifices ;)
yeah well what are the main goals in a conquest for the conqueror? getting wealth, territory and of course either turning their enemies into little spaniards (in this case) or simply exterminate study all the great general in history to be remebered they have to do all this terrible things and still some of us admire them ....
well if cortes had been in the place of pedro de alvarado he would have done the same still not for being evil but because he was supposed to conquer mexico for spain he was a general after all and sometimes generals have to kill civilians in order to keep order but aztecs were not stupid and the killing didnt intimidate them.
i have to agree the cause of the sad night was exactly the killing of the priests and civilians by alvarado it really corresponded to the aztecs to defend themselves but there is one thing i dont know: the reason of alvarado to kill all the aztecs can anyone tell me?
my understanding is that the general feeling amongst the spanish garrison was great fear and paranoir and they saw the festival as an irresistable opportunity to inflict a massive blow upon the people of the city and perhaps turn the fear upon the natives, however this action had the opposite effect.
well the fact that he is not the only evil guy tell us that throught history important characters have to do little evil to do a greater good or great evil for power wealth (its nothing more than human nature)
Guys i know how its written an even the way you wrote it is wrong its : Hernán Cortés
So guys unless you are mexicans (like me)
or historic professionals sepcialized on this area; dont try to correct me if something is spelled wrong it because of the little time i have to write something if i dont have an event its the same so please stop telling me what to do.
well, Tenochtitlan was in the middle of a lake, and most of the battle was on a bridge over the lake when the spanish and their native allies were going out, they got surrounded from the waters and the later break down of the bridge by the aztecs, so they had to scape through the lake... or die on it.
Ok i couldnt make a battle on a lake i do know the main battle was on the bridge i actually know exactly how happened in the battle like for example pedro de alvarado was told to command the rear of the escaping army and all of the rear died except for pedro de alvarado who used a pike to cross the river or lake i wished i could have done a better representation but its just a game i cant do whatever i want i have to adapt to the game i cant adapt it to me. :)
With some sweat and effort, you must have this game: Medieval Total War 2 and look in the browser for a web that helps you install the cinematic editor
elfo and me know each other, he knows Im joking. Anyway, I didn't see cortes crying. I expected see him crying in a painful way, screaming, something like: "ayyyyyyyyyyy ayyyyyyyy por quéeeeeeeeeee!!! noooooooooooooooooo!!!!"

They only thing they should have added was the Big lake on which Tenochtitlan was built.
This way you could attack on the bridges...etc
it was on a lake..
the spanish flew with gold in their pockets, and many drowned and went down with the Aztec gold...
You should read del Castillo's book, on the conquest of the New world.. Corte'z conquistadore .. amazing book, 500 years old

so because he wasn't as evil as some others he wasn't evil in ur book? he killed thousands in he stupid quest for glory and wealth. at an aztec festival he and his men massacred over 5000 aztecs in the most brutal ways just to take the gold they were wearing and then sacked the great temple! that is why the noche triste happened, i think it was justified even if those tow thing didn't happen cuz of all the other evil things the spaniards did to them! the aztecs did the cruel things that they did
Bluestar705 3 years ago
because they thought they needed to appease their gods in order to stop the world from dyeing!
Bluestar705 3 years ago
yeah well many cultures have unusual terrifying rituals offer whatever the real thing is that we dont have a guide to know whats good or bad but our religious education and its going to differ from each person to each
saspir 3 years ago
the massacre during the aztec festival was carried out by Pedro De Alvarado against Cortez's specific instructions while he was fighting Narvaez on the coast. Cortez was not an evil man, sure he did some bad things but he should be remembered for more than that. He should be remembered for being a brilliant general. A brave man, who through a great gamble and heroism carried out one of the most amazing acts in history
elamena 3 years ago
thousands of aztecs died in the siege of tenochtitlan. and he was too evil! he had an aztec emperor tortured so that he could have his "treasure". if that isn't evil, i dont know what is. his "amazing act" destroyed aztecs culture. because of him, the natives were forced to learn christianity, the plague was introduced, and thousands died of malnourishment because he limited their diets to so called non pagan foods. he and his men massacred the aztecs on many occasions, and he only caused pain
Bluestar705 3 years ago
in his quest for treasure and fame. he held an emperor hostage and probably killed him. he was a monster and a mass murderer.
Bluestar705 3 years ago
I'm not suggesting he was saint and i'll be the first to admit that he did some very bad things but how can you deny Cortez's brilliance? he was a masterful general and tactition
elamena 3 years ago
read cortes biography he was a really interesting character in history ;)
saspir 3 years ago
he simply had what it taked to be a great character in history at least agreat military general is it good or wrong well i dont know
saspir 3 years ago
well they were medieval people what could you expect they thought they were doing good or maybe they wanted to think so by using good, anyways we must see cortes as a human like us so we can understand him better, and yes it was a shame such an amazing culture like the aztecs vanished still the aztecs also had their evil side thousands of sacrifices ;)
saspir 3 years ago
yeah well what are the main goals in a conquest for the conqueror? getting wealth, territory and of course either turning their enemies into little spaniards (in this case) or simply exterminate study all the great general in history to be remebered they have to do all this terrible things and still some of us admire them ....
saspir 3 years ago
well if cortes had been in the place of pedro de alvarado he would have done the same still not for being evil but because he was supposed to conquer mexico for spain he was a general after all and sometimes generals have to kill civilians in order to keep order but aztecs were not stupid and the killing didnt intimidate them.
saspir 3 years ago
i have to agree the cause of the sad night was exactly the killing of the priests and civilians by alvarado it really corresponded to the aztecs to defend themselves but there is one thing i dont know: the reason of alvarado to kill all the aztecs can anyone tell me?
saspir 3 years ago
my understanding is that the general feeling amongst the spanish garrison was great fear and paranoir and they saw the festival as an irresistable opportunity to inflict a massive blow upon the people of the city and perhaps turn the fear upon the natives, however this action had the opposite effect.
elamena 3 years ago
well there it goes war nature is like that
saspir 3 years ago
well the fact that he is not the only evil guy tell us that throught history important characters have to do little evil to do a greater good or great evil for power wealth (its nothing more than human nature)

well, Tenochtitlan was in the middle of a lake, and most of the battle was on a bridge over the lake when the spanish and their native allies were going out, they got surrounded from the waters and the later break down of the bridge by the aztecs, so they had to scape through the lake... or die on it.
MonkeyIron 3 years ago
Ok i couldnt make a battle on a lake i do know the main battle was on the bridge i actually know exactly how happened in the battle like for example pedro de alvarado was told to command the rear of the escaping army and all of the rear died except for pedro de alvarado who used a pike to cross the river or lake i wished i could have done a better representation but its just a game i cant do whatever i want i have to adapt to the game i cant adapt it to me. :)
