You can breath. There is plenty of oxygen in that room. CS is an irritant, but it does not deplete the lungs of oxygen.

I went through twice in Basic at Knox. Brilliant me mocking the power of CS in front of a DS. The main issue is you have a strong feeling of being unable to breathe and your body goes on auto-panic. When you inhale, unless you control yourself, you begin to cough violently and a signal hits your brain screaming, "We're drowning! Spaz the fuck out!"... ah... good times. Anywho... just relax and remind yourself that you can breathe it just sucks when you do. All gravy from there.

@toxic2k7 if you go in breathin through your mouth (strongly recomended it burns like hell if you breathe through your nose) the first sign is a bitter taste in your mouth then the back of you throat feels itchy and starts to burn then it moves into your lungs if you dont have really good bodily control you will start coughing like crazy nd when you start coughing you cant stop till the cs gas is removed from the air

It depends on the Drill Sergeant. Most of the time, at Ft. Benning anyways, you have to jump up and down and shake your head side to side with the mask on. Then do jumping jacks and push ups. Then you take the mask off, and they ask each individual soldier a question, usually name and serial number or something similar.

Then you can leave.

Your eyes burn, your face burns, you want to puke and some people do. It is hard to breathe, Snot runs out your nose and your eyes tear up real badly!

They do this, not only to prepare people for a possible tear gas attack, but to instill trust in the gas mask, in case of other chemical attacks, such as Nerve Gas, etc. Then you will know the mask works and trust it.

it is very dangerous if u are exsposed to it more than 60 seconds, or depenping on how big a breath u took before u take off the resparator. the gas starves ur brain from oxygen causing brain damage. i know this because i done the nbc course in the british army, as well as doing a bit of research of my own too.

yea its true, they brought me into the chamber and i started freaking out cause i thought my mask was on wrong, but then once i saw everyone else was breathing the shit in as well i calmed down and it helped alot.. it was funny though a recruit tryed to run out of the chamber and my senior DI had to throw him to the deck to calm him down, good times
