thank you, thank you SO much. you see i collect board games, i love them, and to see one treated like this.... it is stunning. how a simple game can be turned into a metaphor for how one might feel, takes incredible wit, and an artistic talent beyond belief. so again thank you.
forking love this video, it's so... awesome:D and the black bit is interesting, and how the board comes back for like, two seconds... hmm MYSTERIOUS YES? dftba(:
This was way too deep for my brain. I just turned 20 45mins ago and I realized I am already playing the game of LIFE, just without much of that money...
I've never played a game of LIFE where someone had the choice of police officer but chose something different, its just so fun to hope for people to roll 10s and then gloat when they do and they have to give you money.

The Game of Life is in no way an accurate representation of Life itself. Just like the traditional rules of Monopoly in no way represent the laws of economics and business, nor Clue represent how one should solve a murder. The four minutes of darkness could have been less, unless I missed some symbolic meaning of it being so long! This channel was recommended and from what I've seen I've been disappointed beyond belief. I get the whole making money the point of life, but what was with the end?
@AlexeiRomanov100 Well I'm sorry you feel that way, however, to be fair, this is not a typical representation of what I typically do so you might want to try out a couple more, and if you don't like them that's fine, I don't make them for you so if you don't like them feel absolutely free to not watch. Not everything is for everyone. I won't explain the metaphors of the video, like all things, it is open to your interpretation.
@AlexeiRomanov100 "The Game of Life is in no way an accurate representation of Life itself." ...are you serious? Clearly you're wrong, ma'am or sir....wow, how can you not take this, as it was intended, as a factual video.
believe it or not but this one video changed my whole perspective on life. and im not just blabbering physcological bullshit. i thank you dan for your influence :)
I don't know what it is about the idea of "It isn't a choice; it's a problem. And John Cliveston is capable of solving problems" my brain finds so fascinating. It bothers me, but I can't put my finger on why... thinking about societal expectations, maybe? And how we may or may not be following/breaking them? Or considering that, at least at the beginning of John's journey, I'm in a somewhat similar position?
Consider me bothered, but also immensely impressed. Very, very well done, sir.
That's it. I'm quitting the game of life, only not in the suicide way. I mean living for the sake of really living and helping others. *extreme cheesy moment alert*
My sister told me that to describe my strangeness to other people she says "It's like everyone else is playing LIFE and she's playing Monopoly, which is why she's so confused that no one else is following her rules."
And I told her "Why am I playing Monopoly? I want to play Clue. And why would you play LIFE? That's a horrible game."
I hadn't gotten around to watching this yet, but decided to when Shawn (uncultured project) tweeted about it. I'm finding that almost as cool as when Hank tweeted about you.
Such a great video! And I do have one thing to add:
To those who are making decisions about life (or college) now or in the near future, dont despair! This video is a moving critique of money as the criterion for major life decisions, but I would urge you not to be depressed if you feel unsure about life. Uncertainty is the human condition! Try to keep you priorities in mind and know that life is what you make it; no matter where you are in life, you are at the center of your locus of control!
Also, I was thinking: A real game of Life should be a box with a set of materials, and instructions to build your gameboard, choose your goal, make the rules. Not everyone will get the same materials, and some will be better than others. But everyone has the same choice: make your Life or give up and skip straight to the last square, which is the same for everyone.
This was beautiful, Dan. So many people say "Money isn't everything" that most of us just brush it off as a stupid cliche. But you really brought to life why that's true. When money is your only object, all your choices become calculations - math problems. And no matter how much you like math, an endless succession of world problems doesn't make a life of substance, and it doesn't build happiness.
Now I wanna make one of these... I don't know why I'm so interested in the game Life. I've played a total of twice in my entire life but I'm pretty obsessed with it game wise.
You have just touched on in a few minutes what took me years to figure out. I wish I had seen this before starting college. Thank you so much for this video. It means a great deal to me.
Oh, and by the way, I forgot to mention that I loved the black space at the end. I sat through the whole thing contemplating what I had just seen. I could have even done w/out the flash of the board at the end.
Wow, thank you so much for this video. It really moved me. I've been thinking a lot about where I want to take my life lately. I see a vague idea of what I want to do but the problem is I don't think anyone has done exactly what I want to do, so I can't follow in someone's footsteps. I'm having to piece together stories from different people to try to figure out what I want. But this video reminded me that I have to follow my dreams, not what society expects me to automatically do.
I feel like an idiot. All this time I've been under the impression that life was a breakfast cereal. No one ever told me it was a game. This really opened my eyes.
This was so beautiful. It pains me that you don't have more subscribers to see things like this. Your videos should be appreciated by more! Loved it Dan!
So I was walking around Windsor and Stonehenge and Oxford today, and all that kept me going was the feeling that you had made a new video. It was cold and very wet and my feet really hurt, but it was amazing. Thank you for completing my fantastic day with an incredible video.
Really, though. This is fantastic. I'd just like to say that there isn't anything really wrong with going to college to make money, you just have to make time for other things you love too. Most of my family are doctors/engineers, but they have passions and really are happy to just provide for their families. Majoring in art history has sort of made me the black sheep, they don't quite understand it, but each person's definition of happiness is different.
up of the little moments and that's all that really matters and you're left glad you didn't play the other version your friends wanted to play where you would only be left wishing the paper play money meant something else.
Anyway, wow, can't believe I left that terribly long response.
Sorry. :)
I think I was trying to say I liked your video, Dan.
through the pursuit of money first or the pursuit of your interests and throughout the game no one is really sure who is actually winning, but they have to reassure themselves that what they're doing is right until they finally come to the end of the game and all there is is a pile of cards to choose from that have instructions like, "Eat an ice cream" or "Ride a bike" or "Tell someone you love them" and you're left a little confused but you follow the instructions and realize that Life is made
It's odd how we're taught at a young age that to "win" at life, just try to make as much money as possible. I loved this video, it made me think of what modifications should be made to the game...perhaps in the beginning everyone should receive a list of likes and aspirations, but throughout the game these keep changing and instead of being marked by paydays and marriages, the game should be marked by opportunities and choices to achieve goals and happiness but no one knows if it should be done
I chose career over college and made enough to buy what I needed, then went back to school, got a better job that I liked and got to buy what I wanted. I always beat the doctor and the lawyer. Money isn't life. Life isn't money. It's 50% strategy and 50% spin of the wheel. And no, I wasn't talking about the board game.
whoa, that was insanely incredible. This needs to featured or spotlighted or something because everyone needs to see this. You, my friend, are a genius :)
