The problem I have is when your flying and ask ATC at your arriving airport for permission to land they almost ALWAYS give you the runway opposite your intended runway so you have to swing all the way around the city at the last minuet.
I'm missing something here. I was flying from Edwards CA. to Flagstaff AZ. The Flagstaff heading was 211. I set what I thought was 211 on my OBS dial. My KFLG was to my Northeast and my 211 heading took my plane Southwest away from my airport. Can you show us how the numbers on that OBS dial works. I was flying in circles. Also what all needs to be set? NAV? GPS? Also there's something to do with the correct altitude for the ILS to "CATCH" my plane? Please explain more.
When you are flying an ILS approach you must set your NAV1 OBS to the runway heading as you approach it (while still several miles out). That is why in the video we show how to find the runway heading from Flight Simulator.
If the plane has a NAV/GPS toggle switch it must be set to NAV otherwise the GPS will be controlling the flight. Altitude - your instructor in FSFS will let you know if you are at the right height, as will your instruments which show your relation to the glideslope.
Glad you liked it! In FSX you will see an indication on your instruments showing whether you are above or below the * glideslope * for the runway in question. This is usually about 3 degrees but does vary. You will see this is the Cessna 172 and in the Boeing 747 - an indication of whether you are too high or too low. You can try FSFlyingSchool 2011 for free - just download the demo - and the instructor will be telling you about the glideslope when you fly!
I love your video but I also heard that you need to be "below" the ILS for the signal to home in on you or something to that effect do you know anything about this?
Also the ILS will only move the needles if you are picking up the signal. You can check that by listening to the morse of the signal by turning on your radio's ability to play the sound from the NAV1 channel (see FSX or FS2004 help for how to do this). Make sure the morse you hear is the name of the ILS you want. If you hear no morse you are not picking up any signal at all and need to fly into its region.
@sam9524 iam using B 757-200 , iam sure its not about the aircraft , because i tried with another aircrafts , can you clear everything about ILS? please? because i really suck at landings . :S
DUDE :D That explaned sooo much thanks :) im training in the T-45 for fsx and is very confused about this. but you made it very easy :) thanks buddy and will be suscribing to your channel :P
ok thx .. now i have another thing going on, .. when i land in heavy snow and thunderstorms conditions, everytime i approach and land the plane starts pulling to the left or right, help plz ty
Ctrl Shift D will only work if you are using our FSFlyingSchool product - it is not a function of Flight Simulator. If you are using FSFlyingSchool (you can try the demo from our site for free) then just make sure that you start with a plane on the ground ready to fly and only then launch FSFlyingSchool.
if ur talking about the ctrl + shift + D, no its not that and no i didnt get anything, u posted what and where? a video? or a comment in this video? by private message or something?
ILS will give you data to follow to fly a smooth approach, but to have it control the plane you need to have NAV/GPS set to NAV and your autopilot set to Approach Mode when you pick up the ILS signal. This is often at about 2500 feet AGL and works well if you intercept the ILS signal from about a 45 degree angle. Once you see the needles start to move, turn on your AP's approach mode. This will take control of the plane. Turn off AutoPilot at about 1000 AGL unless you have autoland (2 APs etc).
Thanks for your kind words. To do ILS you just need ILS at the runway & a NAV1 radio with ILS in the plane. Most modern planes have this. Any powered plane can be made to work with FSFlyingSchool. Hope this helps!
What a great tutorial. It is so easy to learn from this video and at least by landings will be better. I am subscribing. Just 1 question. Does all this work with the 737 or other planes?
Thanks - glad you liked it. Your ILS approaches and dozens of other aspects of airminship are analysed in great detail by the team of talking instructors in FSFlyingSchool - and the demo is free at the FSFlyingSchool web site.
Glad you liked it! There are other FSFlyingSchool videos on YouTube and plenty on our web site which explain how the program works. Demo is free too...
i configured everything i put the ils runway on the radio nav1. and when i was at 2700 ft i put approach hold switch on and put it to nav instead of gps. but it does not line me up with the runway.. it only follows the red line from the gps.. and when i approach the runway i go way of course.. can someone tell me ??
I'm not an expert on ILS [Far from it!] but it MIGHT be that your route ends at the touchdown end of the runway - if the plane is still moving on A/P at the end it starts to circle. Try inserting a waypoint so that you approach from the other end.
Our video is intended to help people set up for an ILS approach in FSFlyingSchool, but I do see what you mean. Can you verify that NAV1 is receiving the ILS signal for the chosen runway?
Glad you like the videos - We will make more when we can!

@FSFlyingSchool That OBS dial is very confusing to me. Single or double digits yet I have a 3 digit heading.
silvereagle2061 10 months ago
@silvereagle2061
The OBS heading selected is shown the same way as on the Heading Indicator where "24" means 240 degrees and so on.

so the only way to land with an ils landing with an aircraft with no gps is using the approach hold?
you cannot intersept the needels with out auto pilot in a ifr flight
what i'm trying to say is can you do this with out auto pilot? like file from VOR to VOR
But this time runway to runway using the vor needels?
just to make fling learnig skills more GOOD

@lobbyhobbybobbydubob Yes you can do all the instrument flying you want without the autopilot.

ok what you do is set the nav frequency set it to current and hit autopilot and hit the Approach button(APR) or (APP) and it should line up
