when the first roller coaster came out in the 1880s all the riders had to push up a whole train up the lift

it was in russia i think. they would ride the abandoned mining trains as they coasted down the hill for a small fee (if memory serves) for a thrill. eventually someone started producing "coasters" for the sole purpose of being thrilling.
