This song still trips me out. Reminds me of when I was really depressed 3 years ago. I get the feeling Portland wasn't such a great place to live 30 years ago every time I listen to Wipers.
@Frenzyczczcz Good luck finding any, I tried figuring out how to play some Wipers songs... the tabulature is really weird but it's not too hard to figure out.
@Frenzyczczcz Wouldn't it be better in the long run to learn to figure it out with your own ears instead of relying on some stranger's tabs that 99 out of 100 times are just wrong?
One of the few American Underground bands who's members were musically competent. Greg Sage is a great guitarist. Almost like a thrashier, virtuoso Neil Young attack.
Nobody invented grunge. Grunge was a term given from the mainstream media who didn't know what punk/underground music was and took the name from the type of clothing bands like Nirvana and Pearl Jam wore. Its fucking stupid. I hate the fucking mainstream.
Wow people call this grunge? What? This is like straight up rock. Great stuff. But how could it be grunge if you call this grunge you most have never heard grunge.
@wetterfee41 "Straight up Rock"? If that kind of thing exists I would think of it being along the lines of AC/DC, Aerosmith, Guns N Roses or even Bruce Springsteen.
@xreddragonx I can see and agree with punk. I guess it's just my view that this is "straight up rock" cause I don't/haven't listen to any of those you mentioned and so it's just be my view on their music.
"Grunge" is a marketing word propogated by mainstream media to categorize a decades-old underground rock movement they didn't understand. Greg Sage and The Wipers didn't invent this movement, but were among its early pioneers. It was regional. Wipers in Pacific NW, Black Flag in LA, Dead Kennedy's in SF, Big Black/Naked Raygun in Chicago, Husker Du/Replacements in Minn, Zero Boys in Indianapolis, Ramones and later Sonic Youth in NYC.
@Satyagrahaha as was the term "punk rock." When punk came about in the 70's everyone called it "new wave" until media and magazines gave it the label "punk rock." But whatever, it works...
@LoudProudNPunk1 Don't tell that to Roderick Edward "Legs" McNeil, publisher of the 1974 fanzine "PUNK". Let's credit Legs McNeil's DIY inspiration instead of that Rolling Stone magazine hippy critic who wrote the review on the Stooges first album in 1969 that said: "This is the sound of punks crossing the street for hamburgers."
The Wipers didn't just influence what later was called 'grunge.' It was the local DIY music grunge stars grew up on. Wipers were well-loved in Pacific Northwest underground of the 70s and 80s. Most know them now because of the almost evangelistic support of people like Kurt Cobain or Mike Johnson from Dinosaur Jr.
Nobody could imitate the Wipers, to this day no one has even come close!!! One of my favorite bands of all time. First band I listen to when I feel like shit.
Wipers..AWESOME!Greg Sage=THE genius of rock.Saw 'em in 1987 up the East Coast,DC,Philly,New Jersey,NYC,Boston,Portland,Maine.Fantastic.Way too many great songs to have a favorite.Window Shop,Just a Dream Away,Straight Ahead,Dont Know What I Am,Nothing Left to Lose,on and on...Check out my cover of D-7 gimme a rating, lemme know how ya like it.
Well. I guess I did! And since it's just for MY private pleasure, i suggest you just leave me alone, shut the heck up and bang your mom, or whatever you do in your spare time!
@WIPPPPPER3 didnt think a wipers listener would reply like that. love plz no hate, if it's one thing that the wipers bring to us is everything is not as it seems even if people comment something seemingly off. no one needs to bang there mom
Neither Neil Young OR Greg Sage invented grunge...grunge was a mixture of punk rock, heavy metal, and small elements of glam. You can't say Young or Sage's music fits that description in any way.
heard this song recently over headphones while strolling through a whorehouse in frankfurt looking in the faces of all the whores. the effect was overwhelming...
well if you actually to listened some of the cure albums you would realize they weren't always shit, don't be an asshole and open your mouth without good reason.
What I like in Wipers is that they always seemed to stay "backstage" or in the "garage" scene, this, ladies and gentlemen is only for the chosen :) ... Great band!
@tjulen7 yeah you're right. Perhaps one can say they're an absolutely great local band, which is not pejorative cause they're universal. Today too many bands consider themselves universal. when they're just poorly local.
I actually just knew the name of this band. I heard it in the 90ies and now that i got all of their stuff on CD, i'm also listening to them over and over again...
I haven't heart that song in AGES - I used to have in on tape a long time ago and used to listen to it over and over again in the beginning of the 90ies in Germany :) - Thanks for uploading it!!!!
I can say the exact same thing.. first time hearing them was in Germany myself (1990-1). you need to upload 'wait a minute' if you have not already.. love that song..
This song is bloody great - killer guitar riff.
I’ve put it on the playlist on my Internet Radio Station.

Just because it influenced Nirvana or Pearl Jam doesn't make it Grunge, Devo influenced Grunge just as much a Young or Sage did.
alexfanx 2 years ago 11
I don't think devo is the best example of grunge influence because they influenced alot of things, also i never said the wipers were grunge.
Awesomo4003 2 years ago
Influenced a lot of things? So did Neil Young and Greg Sage. Not even the Melvins influenced only Grunge.
alexfanx 2 years ago
yeah but its much broader and its very loosely tied to grunge
Awesomo4003 2 years ago
Maybe, but I still think it would be hard to find a Grunge band that wasn't formed by Devo fans.
